*
God ,
who at sundry times and in divers manners spake (
5660 )
in time past unto the fathers by the prophets ,
*
Hath in these last days spoken (
5656 )
unto us by his Son ,
whom he hath appointed (
5656 )
heir of all things ,
by whom also he made (
5656 )
the worlds ;
*
Who being (
5752 )
the brightness of his glory ,
and the express image of his person ,
and upholding (
5723 )
all things by the word of his power ,
when he had #
by himself purged (
5671 )
our sins ,
sat down (
5656 )
on the right hand of the Majesty on high ;
*
Being made (
5637 )
so much better than the angels ,
as he hath by inheritance obtained (
5758 )
a more excellent name than they .
*
For unto which of the angels said he (
5627 )
at any time ,
Thou art (
5748 )
my Son ,
this day have I begotten (
5758 )
thee ?
And again ,
I will be (
5704 )
to him a Father ,
and he shall be (
5704 )
to me a Son ?
*
And again ,
when he bringeth in (
5632 )
the firstbegotten into the world ,
he saith (
5719 ),
And let all the angels of God worship (
5657 )
him .
*
And of the angels he saith (
5719 ),
Who maketh (
5723 )
his angels spirits ,
and his ministers a flame of fire .
*
But unto the Son he saith ,
Thy throne ,
O God ,
is for ever and ever :
a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom .
*
Thou hast loved (
5656 )
righteousness ,
and hated (
5656 )
iniquity ;
therefore God ,
even thy God ,
hath anointed (
5656 )
thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows .
*
And ,
Thou ,
Lord ,
in the beginning hast laid the foundation (
5656 )
of the earth ;
and the heavens are (
5748 )
the works of thine hands :
*
They shall perish (
5698 );
but thou remainest (
5719 );
and they all shall wax old (
5701 )
as doth a garment ;
*
And as a vesture shalt thou fold them up (
5692 ),
and they shall be changed (
5691 ):
but thou art (
5748 )
the same ,
and thy years shall not fail (
5692 ).
*
But to which of the angels said he (
5758 )
at any time ,
Sit (
5737 )
on my right hand ,
until I make (
5632 )
thine enemies thy footstool ?
*
Are they (
5748 )
not all ministering spirits ,
sent forth (
5746 )
to minister for them who shall (
5723 )
be heirs of (
5721 )
salvation ?
*
Therefore we ought (
5748 )
to give the more earnest heed (
5721 )
to the things which we have heard (
5685 ),
lest at any time we should let them slip (
5632 ).
*
For if the word spoken (
5685 )
by angels was (
5633 )
stedfast ,
and every transgression and disobedience received (
5627 )
a just recompence of reward ;
*
How shall we escape (
5695 ),
if we neglect (
5660 )
so great salvation ;
which at the first began (
5631 )
to be spoken (
5745 )
by the Lord ,
and was confirmed (
5681 )
unto us by them that heard (
5660 )
him ;
*
God also bearing them witness (
5723 ),
both with signs and wonders ,
and with divers miracles ,
and gifts of the Holy Ghost ,
according to his own will ?
*
For unto the angels hath he not put in subjection (
5656 )
the world to come (
5723 ),
whereof we speak (
5719 ).
*
But one in a certain place testified (
5662 ),
saying (
5723 ),
What is (
5748 )
man ,
that thou art mindful (
5736 )
of him ?
or the son of man ,
that thou visitest (
5736 )
him ?
*
Thou madest him a little lower (
5656 )
than the angels ;
thou crownedst (
5656 )
him with glory and honour ,
and didst set (
5656 )
him over the works of thy hands :
*
Thou hast put all things in subjection (
5656 )
under his feet .
For in that he put all in subjection under (
5658 )
him ,
he left (
5656 )
nothing that is not put under him .
But now we see (
5719 )
not yet all things put under (
5772 )
him .
*
But we see (
5719 )
Jesus ,
who was made a little lower (
5772 )
than the angels for the suffering of death ,
crowned (
5772 )
with glory and honour ;
that he by the grace of God should taste (
5667 )
death for every man .
*
For it became (
5707 )
him ,
for whom are all things ,
and by whom are all things ,
in bringing (
5631 )
many sons unto glory ,
to make the captain of their salvation perfect (
5658 )
through sufferings .
*
For both he that sanctifieth (
5723 )
and they who are sanctified (
5746 )
are all of one :
for which cause he is not ashamed (
5736 )
to call (
5721 )
them brethren ,
*
Saying (
5723 ),
I will declare (
5692 )
thy name unto my brethren ,
in the midst of the church will I sing praise (
5692 )
unto thee .
*
And again ,
I will (
5704 )
put my trust (
5756 )
in him .
And again ,
Behold (
5628 )
I and the children which God hath given (
5656 )
me .
*
Forasmuch then as the children are partakers (
5758 )
of flesh and blood ,
he also himself likewise took part (
5627 )
of the same ;
that through death he might destroy (
5661 )
him that had (
5723 )
the power of death ,
that is (
5748 ),
the devil ;
*
And deliver (
5661 )
them who through fear of death were (
5713 )
all their lifetime (
5721 )
subject to bondage .
*
For verily he took not on (
5736 )
him the nature of angels ;
but he took on (
5736 )
him the seed of Abraham .
*
Wherefore in all things it behoved him (
5707 )
to be made like (
5683 )
unto his brethren ,
that he might be (
5638 )
a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God ,
to make reconciliation for (
5745 )
the sins of the people .
*
For in that he himself hath suffered (
5754 )
being tempted (
5685 ),
he is able (
5736 )
to succour (
5658 )
them that are tempted (
5746 ).
*
Wherefore ,
holy brethren ,
partakers of the heavenly calling ,
consider (
5657 )
the Apostle and High Priest of our profession ,
Christ Jesus ;
*
Who was (
5752 )
faithful to him that appointed (
5660 )
him ,
as also Moses was faithful in all his house .
*
For this man was counted worthy (
5769 )
of more glory than Moses ,
inasmuch as he who hath builded (
5660 )
the house hath more honour than (
5719 )
the house .
*
For every house is builded (
5743 )
by some man ;
but he that built (
5660 )
all things is God .
*
And Moses verily was faithful in all his house ,
as a servant ,
for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after (
5702 );
*
But Christ as a son over his own house ;
whose house are (
5748 )
we ,
if we hold fast (
5632 )
the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end .
*
Wherefore (
as the Holy Ghost saith (
5719 ),
To day if ye will hear (
5661 )
his voice ,
*
Harden (
5725 )
not your hearts ,
as in the provocation ,
in the day of temptation in the wilderness :
*
When your fathers tempted (
5656 )
me ,
proved (
5656 )
me ,
and saw (
5627 )
my works forty years .
*
Wherefore I was grieved (
5656 )
with that generation ,
and said (
5627 ),
They do alway err (
5746 )
in their heart ;
and they have not known (
5627 )
my ways .
*
So I sware (
5656 )
in my wrath ,
They shall not enter (
5695 )
into my rest .)
*
Take heed (
5720 ),
brethren ,
lest there be (
5704 )
in any of you an evil heart of unbelief ,
in departing (
5629 )
from the living (
5723 )
God .
*
But exhort (
5720 )
one another daily ,
while it is called (
5743 )
To day ;
lest any of you be hardened (
5686 )
through the deceitfulness of sin .
*
For we are made (
5754 )
partakers of Christ ,
if we hold (
5632 )
the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end ;
*
While it is said (
5745 ),
To day if ye will hear (
5661 )
his voice ,
harden (
5725 )
not your hearts ,
as in the provocation .
*
For some ,
when they had heard (
5660 ),
did provoke (
5656 ):
howbeit not all that came (
5631 )
out of Egypt by Moses .
*
But with whom was he grieved (
5656 )
forty years ?
was it not with them that had sinned (
5660 ),
whose carcases fell (
5627 )
in the wilderness ?
*
And to whom sware he (
5656 )
that they should not enter (
5696 )
into his rest ,
but to them that believed not (
5660 )?
*
So we see (
5719 )
that they could (
5675 )
not enter in (
5629 )
because of unbelief .
*
Let us therefore fear (
5680 ),
lest ,
a promise being left (
5746 )
us of entering (
5629 )
into his rest ,
any of you should seem (
5725 )
to come short of it (
5760 ).
*
For unto us was (
5748 )
the gospel preached (
5772 ),
as well as unto them :
but the word preached did not profit (
5656 )
them ,
not being mixed (
5772 )
with faith in them that heard (
5660 )
it .
*
For we which have believed (
5660 )
do enter (
5736 )
into rest ,
as he said (
5758 ),
As I have sworn (
5656 )
in my wrath ,
if they shall enter (
5695 )
into my rest :
although the works were finished (
5679 )
from the foundation of the world .
*
For he spake (
5758 )
in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise ,
And God did rest (
5656 )
the seventh day from all his works .
*
And in this place again ,
If they shall enter (
5695 )
into my rest .
*
Seeing therefore it remaineth (
5743 )
that some must enter (
5629 )
therein ,
and they to whom it was first preached (
5685 )
entered not in (
5627 )
because of unbelief :
*
Again ,
he limiteth (
5719 )
a certain day ,
saying (
5723 )
in David ,
To day ,
after so long a time ;
as it is said (
5769 ),
To day if ye will hear (
5661 )
his voice ,
harden (
5725 )
not your hearts .
*
For if Jesus had given them rest (
5656 ),
then would he not afterward have spoken (
5707 )
of another day .
*
There remaineth (
5743 )
therefore a rest to the people of God .
*
For he that is entered (
5631 )
into his rest ,
he also hath ceased (
5656 )
from his own works ,
as God did from his .
*
Let us labour (
5661 )
therefore to enter (
5629 )
into that rest ,
lest any man fall (
5632 )
after the same example of unbelief .
*
For the word of God is quick (
5723 ),
and powerful ,
and sharper than any twoedged sword ,
piercing (
5740 )
even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit ,
and of the joints and marrow ,
and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart .
*
Neither is there (
5748 )
any creature that is not manifest in his sight :
but all things are naked and opened (
5772 )
unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do .
*
Seeing then that we have (
5723 )
a great high priest ,
that is passed into (
5756 )
the heavens ,
Jesus the Son of God ,
let us hold fast (
5725 )
our profession .
*
For we have (
5719 )
not an high priest which cannot (
5740 )
be touched with the feeling (
5658 )
of our infirmities ;
but was in all points tempted (
5772 ) (
5625 ) (
5772 )
like as we are ,
yet without sin .
*
Let us therefore come (
5741 )
boldly unto the throne of grace ,
that we may obtain (
5632 )
mercy ,
and find (
5632 )
grace to help in time of need .
*
For every high priest taken (
5746 )
from among men is ordained (
5743 )
for men in things pertaining to God ,
that he may offer (
5725 )
both gifts and sacrifices for sins :
*
Who can (
5740 )
have compassion (
5721 )
on the ignorant (
5723 ),
and on them that are out of the way (
5746 );
for that he himself also is compassed (
5736 )
with infirmity .
*
And by reason hereof he ought (
5719 ),
as for the people ,
so also for himself ,
to offer (
5721 )
for sins .
*
And no man taketh (
5719 )
this honour unto himself ,
but he that is called (
5746 )
of God ,
as was Aaron .
*
So also Christ glorified (
5656 )
not himself to be made (
5677 )
an high priest ;
but he that said (
5660 )
unto him ,
Thou art (
5748 )
my Son ,
to day have I begotten (
5758 )
thee .
*
As he saith (
5719 )
also in another place ,
Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec .
*
Who in the days of his flesh ,
when he had offered up (
5660 )
prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able (
5740 )
to save (
5721 )
him from death ,
and was heard (
5685 )
in that he feared ;
*
Though he were (
5752 )
a Son ,
yet learned he (
5627 )
obedience by the things which he suffered (
5627 );
*
And being made perfect (
5685 ),
he became (
5633 )
the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey (
5723 )
him ;
*
Called (
5685 )
of God an high priest after the order of Melchisedec .
*
Of whom we have many things to say ,
and hard to be uttered (
5721 ),
seeing ye are (
5754 )
dull of hearing .
*
For when for the time ye ought (
5723 )
to be (
5750 )
teachers ,
ye have (
5719 )
need that one teach (
5721 )
you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God ;
and are become such as (
5754 )
have (
5723 )
need of milk ,
and not of strong meat .
*
For every one that useth (
5723 )
milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness :
for he is (
5748 )
a babe .
*
But strong meat belongeth to them that are (
5748 )
of full age ,
even those who by reason of use have (
5723 )
their senses exercised (
5772 )
to discern both good and evil .
*
Therefore leaving (
5631 )
the principles of the doctrine of Christ ,
let us go on (
5747 )
unto perfection ;
not laying (
5734 )
again the foundation of repentance from dead works ,
and of faith toward God ,
*
Of the doctrine of baptisms ,
and of laying on of hands ,
and of resurrection of the dead ,
and of eternal judgment .
*
And this will we do (
5692 ),
if God permit (
5725 ).
*
For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened (
5685 ),
and have tasted (
5666 )
of the heavenly gift ,
and were made (
5679 )
partakers of the Holy Ghost ,
*
And have tasted (
5666 )
the good word of God ,
and the powers of the world to come (
5723 ),
*
If they shall fall away (
5631 ),
to renew them (
5721 )
again unto repentance ;
seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh (
5723 ),
and put him to an open shame (
5723 ).
*
For the earth which drinketh in (
5631 )
the rain that cometh (
5740 )
oft upon it ,
and bringeth forth (
5723 )
herbs meet for them by whom it is dressed (
5743 ),
receiveth (
5719 )
blessing from God :
*
But that which beareth (
5723 )
thorns and briers is rejected ,
and is nigh unto cursing ;
whose end is to be burned .
*
But ,
beloved ,
we are persuaded (
5769 )
better things of you ,
and things that accompany (
5746 )
salvation ,
though we thus speak (
5719 ).
*
For God is not unrighteous to forget (
5635 )
your work and labour of love ,
which ye have shewed (
5668 ) (
5625 ) (
5669 )
toward his name ,
in that ye have ministered (
5660 )
to the saints ,
and do minister (
5723 ).
*
And we desire (
5719 )
that every one of you do shew (
5733 )
the same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end :
*
That ye be (
5638 )
not slothful ,
but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit (
5723 )
the promises .
*
For when God made promise (
5666 )
to Abraham ,
because he could (
5707 )
swear (
5658 )
by no greater ,
he sware (
5656 )
by himself ,
*
Saying (
5723 ),
Surely blessing (
5723 )
I will bless (
5692 )
thee ,
and multiplying (
5723 )
I will multiply (
5692 )
thee .
*
And so ,
after he had patiently endured (
5660 ),
he obtained (
5627 )
the promise .
*
For men verily swear (
5719 )
by the greater :
and an oath for confirmation is to them an end of all strife .
*
Wherein God ,
willing (
5740 )
more abundantly to shew (
5658 )
unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel ,
confirmed (
5656 )
it by an oath :
*
That by two immutable things ,
in which it was impossible for God to lie (
5664 ),
we might have (
5725 )
a strong consolation ,
who have fled for refuge (
5631 )
to lay hold (
5658 )
upon the hope set before us (
5740 ):
*
Which hope we have (
5719 )
as an anchor of the soul ,
both sure and stedfast ,
and which entereth (
5740 )
into that within the veil ;
*
Whither the forerunner is for us entered (
5627 ),
even Jesus ,
made (
5637 )
an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec .
*
For this Melchisedec ,
king of Salem ,
priest of the most high God ,
who met (
5660 )
Abraham returning (
5723 )
from the slaughter of the kings ,
and blessed (
5660 )
him ;
