*
Then Job answered and said ,
*
Oh that my vexation were but weighed ,
And all my calamity laid in the balances !
*
For now it would be heavier than the sand of the seas :
Therefore my words have been rash .
*
For the arrows of the Almighty are inside me ,
The poison of which my spirit drinks up :
The terrors of God set themselves in array against me .
*
Does the wild donkey bray when he has grass ?
Or does the ox low over his fodder ?
*
Can that which has no savor be eaten without salt ?
Or is there any taste in the white of an egg ?
*
My soul refuses to touch [
them ];
They are as loathsome food to me .
*
Oh that I might have my request ;
And that God would grant [
me ]
the thing that I long for !
*
Even that it would please God to crush me ;
That he would let loose his hand ,
and cut me off !
*
And be it still my consolation ,
Yes ,
let me exult in pain that does not spare ,
That I have not denied the words of the Holy One .
*
What is my strength ,
that I should wait ?
And what is my end ,
that I should be patient ?
*
Is my strength the strength of stones ?
Or is my flesh of bronze ?
*
Is it not that I have no help in me ,
And that wisdom is driven quite from me ?
*
To him who is ready to faint kindness [
should be shown ]
from his friend ;
Even to him who forsakes the fear of the Almighty .
*
My brothers have betrayed as a wadi ,
As a channel of wadis ,
they pass away ;
*
Which are black by reason of the ice , [
And ]
in which the snow hides itself :
*
What time they wax warm ,
they vanish ;
When it is hot ,
they are consumed out of their place .
*
The caravans [
that travel ]
by the way of them turn aside ;
They go up into the waste ,
and perish .
*
The caravans of Tema looked ,
The companies of Sheba waited for them .
*
They were put to shame because they had hoped ;
They came there ,
and were confounded .
*
For now you (
note :){+}(:
note )
are nothing ;
You {+}
see a terror ,
and are afraid .
*
Did I say ,
Give to me ?
Or ,
Offer a present for me of your (
note :){+}(:
note )
substance ?
*
Or ,
Deliver me from the adversary '
s hand ?
Or ,
Redeem me from the hand of the oppressors ?
*
Teach me ,
and I will hold my peace ;
And cause me to understand in what I have erred .
*
How forcible are words of uprightness !
But your (
note :){+}(:
note )
reproof ,
what does it reprove ?
*
Do you (
note :){+}(:
note )
think to reprove words ,
Seeing that the speeches of one who is desperate are as wind ?
*
Yes ,
you (
note :){+}(:
note )
would cast [
lots ]
on the fatherless ,
And make merchandise of your {+}
companion .
*
Now therefore be pleased to look at me ;
For surely I will not lie to your (
note :){+}(:
note )
face .
*
Return ,
I pray you (
note :){+}(:
note ),
let there be no injustice ;
Yes ,
return again ,
my cause is righteous .
*
Is there injustice on my tongue ?
Can '
t my taste discern mischievous things ?
*
Is there not a warfare to common man on earth ?
And are not his days like the days of a hired worker ?
*
As a slave who earnestly desires the shadow ,
And as a hired worker that looks for his wages :
*
So am I made to possess months of misery ,
And wearisome nights are appointed to me .
*
When I lie down ,
I say ,
When shall I arise ,
and the night be gone ?
And I am full of tossings to and fro to the dawning of the day .
*
My flesh is clothed with worms and clods of dust ;
My skin closes up ,
and breaks out afresh .
*
My days are swifter than a weaver '
s shuttle ,
And are spent without hope .
*
Oh remember that my life is a breath :
My eye will no more see good .
*
The eye of him who sees me will look at me no more ;
Your eyes will be on me ,
but I will not be .
*
As the cloud is consumed and vanishes away ,
So he who goes down to Sheol will come up no more .
*
He will return no more to his house ,
Neither will his place know him anymore .
*
Therefore I will not refrain my mouth ;
I will speak in the anguish of my spirit ;
I will complain in the bitterness of my soul .
*
Am I a sea ,
or a sea-monster ,
That you set a watch over me ?
*
When I say ,
My bed will comfort me ,
My couch will ease my complaint ;
*
Then you scare me with dreams ,
And terrify me through visions :
*
So that my soul chooses strangling ,
And death rather than my bones .
*
I loathe [
my life ];
I would not live always :
Let me alone ;
for my days are vanity .
*
What is common man ,
that you should magnify him ,
And that you should set your mind on him ,
*
And that you should visit him every morning ,
And try him every moment ?
*
How long will you not look away from me ,
Nor let me alone until I swallow down my spittle ?
*
If I have sinned ,
what do I do to you ,
O you watcher of man ?
Why have you set me as a mark for you ,
So that I am a burden to you ?
*
And why don '
t you pardon my transgression ,
and take away my iniquity ?
For now I will lie down in the dust ;
And you will seek me diligently ,
but I will not be .

Then Bildad the Shuhite answered and said ,
