tcent Luke:14-15

tcent@Luke:14:1 @ One Sabbath, when he went to dine at the house of a ruler who belonged to the Pharisees, they watched him.

tcent@Luke:14:2 @ And behold, there was a man before him who had dropsy.

tcent@Luke:14:3 @ And Jesus spoke to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, »Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath, or not?«

tcent@Luke:14:4 @ But they kept silent. And he took him and healed him, and let him go.

tcent@Luke:14:5 @ Then he said to them, »Which of you, having a son or an ox that has fallen into a well, will not immediately pull him out on the Sabbath day?«

tcent@Luke:14:6 @ And they could not reply to this.

tcent@Luke:14:7 @ So he told a parable to those who were invited, when he noted how they chose the places of honor, saying to them:

tcent@Luke:14:8 @ »When you are invited by anyone to a wedding feast, do not sit down in a place of honor, lest one more distinguished than you be invited by him;

tcent@Luke:14:9 @ and he who invited you both will come and say to you, Give place to this man, and then you will begin with shame to take the lowest place.

tcent@Luke:14:10 @ But when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, so that when your host comes he may say to you, Friend, go up higher. Then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at table with you.

tcent@Luke:14:11 @ For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.«

tcent@Luke:14:12 @ Then he also said to the one who invited him, »When you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers, your relatives or rich neighbors, lest they also invite you back, and you be repaid.

tcent@Luke:14:13 @ But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind,

tcent@Luke:14:14 @ and you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you. You will be repaid at the resurrection of the just.«

tcent@Luke:14:15 @ When one of those who sat at table with him heard this, he said to him, »Blessed is he who shall eat bread in the kingdom of God!«

tcent@Luke:14:16 @ Then he said to him, »A certain man gave a great banquet and invited many.

tcent@Luke:14:17 @ And at the time of the banquet he sent his servant to say to those who had been invited, Come, for all is now ready.

tcent@Luke:14:18 @ But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said to him, I have bought a field, and I must go out and see it. I ask you to have me excused.

tcent@Luke:14:19 @ And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to test them. I ask you to have me excused.

tcent@Luke:14:20 @ Still another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.

tcent@Luke:14:21 @ So the servant came back and reported this to his master. Then the owner of the house became angry and said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city and bring in the poor and the maimed, the blind and the lame.

tcent@Luke:14:22 @ And the servant said, Sir, what you commanded has been done, and still there is room.

tcent@Luke:14:23 @ Then the master said to the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.

tcent@Luke:14:24 @ For I tell you, none of those men who were invited shall taste my banquet.«

tcent@Luke:14:25 @ Now great multitudes went with him; and he turned and said to them,

tcent@Luke:14:26 @ »If any one comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.

tcent@Luke:14:27 @ And whoever does not bear his cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.

tcent@Luke:14:28 @ For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it?

tcent@Luke:14:29 @ Otherwise, when he has laid the foundation, and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him,

tcent@Luke:14:30 @ saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish.

tcent@Luke:14:31 @ Or what king, going to make war against another king, will not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand?

tcent@Luke:14:32 @ And if not, while the other is still a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks terms of peace.

tcent@Luke:14:33 @ So likewise, whoever of you does not give up all that he has cannot be my disciple.

tcent@Luke:14:34 @ Salt is good; but if the salt has lost its taste, how shall it be seasoned?

tcent@Luke:14:35 @ It is neither fit for the land nor for the dunghill; men throw it out. He who has ears to hear, let him hear!«

tcent@Luke:15:1 @ Now the tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to hear him.

tcent@Luke:15:2 @ And the Pharisees and the scribes murmured, saying, »This man receives sinners and eats with them.«

tcent@Luke:15:3 @ So he told them this parable:

tcent@Luke:15:4 @ »What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he loses one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after the one which is lost until he finds it?

tcent@Luke:15:5 @ And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing.

tcent@Luke:15:6 @ And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them, Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost.

tcent@Luke:15:7 @ I tell you that in the same way there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.

tcent@Luke:15:8 @ »Or what woman, having ten silver coins, if she loses one coin, does not light a lamp and sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it?

tcent@Luke:15:9 @ And when she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin which I had lost.

tcent@Luke:15:10 @ In the same way, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.«

tcent@Luke:15:11 @ Then he said: »There was a man who had two sons.

tcent@Luke:15:12 @ And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the share of property that falls to me. So he divided his living between them.

tcent@Luke:15:13 @ Not many days after, the younger son gathered together all he had and took his journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property in loose living.

tcent@Luke:15:14 @ And when he had spent everything, there arose a severe famine in that country, and he began to be in want.

tcent@Luke:15:15 @ So he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed swine.

tcent@Luke:15:16 @ And he would gladly have filled his stomach with the pods that the swine ate, and no one gave him anything.

tcent@Luke:15:17 @ But when he came to himself, he said, How many of my father's hired servants have bread enough and to spare, and here I perish with hunger!

tcent@Luke:15:18 @ I will arise and go to my father and will say to him, »Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you.

tcent@Luke:15:19 @ I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants.«

tcent@Luke:15:20 @ And he arose and came to his father. But while he was still a great way off, his father saw him and had compassion for him, and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him.

tcent@Luke:15:21 @ And the son said to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.

tcent@Luke:15:22 @ But the father said to his servants, Bring out the best robe and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet.

tcent@Luke:15:23 @ And bring the fatted calf and kill it, and let us eat and be merry;

tcent@Luke:15:24 @ for this my son was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found. And they began to be merry.

tcent@Luke:15:25 @ »Now his older son was in the field. And as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing.

tcent@Luke:15:26 @ So he called one of the servants and asked what these things meant.

tcent@Luke:15:27 @ And he said to him, Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fatted calf, because he has received him safe and sound.

tcent@Luke:15:28 @ But he was angry and refused to go in. So his father came out and pleaded with him.

tcent@Luke:15:29 @ But he answered his father, Behold, these many years I have been serving you, and I never disobeyed your command; yet you never gave me a young goat, that I might make merry with my friends.

tcent@Luke:15:30 @ But when this son of yours came, who has devoured your living with harlots, you killed for him the fatted calf!

tcent@Luke:15:31 @ And he said to him, Son, you are always with me, and all that I have is yours.

tcent@Luke:15:32 @ It was right that we should make merry and be glad, for this your brother was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.«

tcent@Luke:16:1 @ He also said to his disciples: »There was a certain rich man who had a steward, and an accusation was brought to him that this man was wasting his goods.
