Numbers:30-33

rsv@Numbers:30:1 @ Moses said to the heads of the tribes of the people of Israel, "This is what the LORD has commanded.

rsv@Numbers:30:2 @ When a man vows a vow to the LORD, or swears an oath to bind himself by a pledge, he shall not break his word; he shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth.

rsv@Numbers:30:3 @ Or when a woman vows a vow to the LORD, and binds herself by a pledge, while within her father's house, in her youth,

rsv@Numbers:30:4 @ and her father hears of her vow and of her pledge by which she has bound herself, and says nothing to her; then all her vows shall stand, and every pledge by which she has bound herself shall stand.

rsv@Numbers:30:5 @ But if her father expresses disapproval to her on the day that he hears of it, no vow of hers, no pledge by which she has bound herself, shall stand; and the LORD will forgive her, because her father opposed her.

rsv@Numbers:30:6 @ And if she is married to a husband, while under her vows or any thoughtless utterance of her lips by which she has bound herself,

rsv@Numbers:30:7 @ and her husband hears of it, and says nothing to her on the day that he hears; then her vows shall stand, and her pledges by which she has bound herself shall stand.

rsv@Numbers:30:8 @ But if, on the day that her husband comes to hear of it, he expresses disapproval, then he shall make void her vow which was on her, and the thoughtless utterance of her lips, by which she bound herself; and the LORD will forgive her.

rsv@Numbers:30:9 @ But any vow of a widow or of a divorced woman, anything by which she has bound herself, shall stand against her.

rsv@Numbers:30:10 @ And if she vowed in her husband's house, or bound herself by a pledge with an oath,

rsv@Numbers:30:11 @ and her husband heard of it, and said nothing to her, and did not oppose her; then all her vows shall stand, and every pledge by which she bound herself shall stand.

rsv@Numbers:30:12 @ But if her husband makes them null and void on the day that he hears them, then whatever proceeds out of her lips concerning her vows, or concerning her pledge of herself, shall not stand: her husband has made them void, and the LORD will forgive her.

rsv@Numbers:30:13 @ Any vow and any binding oath to afflict herself, her husband may establish, or her husband may make void.

rsv@Numbers:30:14 @ But if her husband says nothing to her from day to day, then he establishes all her vows, or all her pledges, that are upon her; he has established them, because he said nothing to her on the day that he heard of them.

rsv@Numbers:30:15 @ But if he makes them null and void after he has heard of them, then he shall bear her iniquity."

rsv@Numbers:30:16 @ These are the statutes which the LORD commanded Moses, as between a man and his wife, and between a father and his daughter, while in her youth, within her father's house.

rsv@Numbers:31:1 @ The LORD said to Moses,

rsv@Numbers:31:2 @ "Avenge the people of Israel on the Mid'ianites; afterward you shall be gathered to your people."

rsv@Numbers:31:3 @ And Moses said to the people, "Arm men from among you for the war, that they may go against Mid'ian, to execute the LORD's vengeance on Mid'ian.

rsv@Numbers:31:4 @ You shall send a thousand from each of the tribes of Israel to the war."

rsv@Numbers:31:5 @ So there were provided, out of the thousands of Israel, a thousand from each tribe, twelve thousand armed for war.

rsv@Numbers:31:6 @ And Moses sent them to the war, a thousand from each tribe, together with Phin'ehas the son of Elea'zar the priest, with the vessels of the sanctuary and the trumpets for the alarm in his hand.

rsv@Numbers:31:7 @ They warred against Mid'ian, as the LORD commanded Moses, and slew every male.

rsv@Numbers:31:8 @ They slew the kings of Mid'ian with the rest of their slain, Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba, the five kings of Mid'ian; and they also slew Balaam the son of Be'or with the sword.

rsv@Numbers:31:9 @ And the people of Israel took captive the women of Mid'ian and their little ones; and they took as booty all their cattle, their flocks, and all their goods.

rsv@Numbers:31:10 @ All their cities in the places where they dwelt, and all their encampments, they burned with fire,

rsv@Numbers:31:11 @ and took all the spoil and all the booty, both of man and of beast.

rsv@Numbers:31:12 @ Then they brought the captives and the booty and the spoil to Moses, and to Elea'zar the priest, and to the congregation of the people of Israel, at the camp on the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho.

rsv@Numbers:31:13 @ Moses, and Elea'zar the priest, and all the leaders of the congregation, went forth to meet them outside the camp.

rsv@Numbers:31:14 @ And Moses was angry with the officers of the army, the commanders of thousands and the commanders of hundreds, who had come from service in the war.

rsv@Numbers:31:15 @ Moses said to them, "Have you let all the women live?

rsv@Numbers:31:16 @ Behold, these caused the people of Israel, by the counsel of Balaam, to act treacherously against the LORD in the matter of Pe'or, and so the plague came among the congregation of the LORD.

rsv@Numbers:31:17 @ Now therefore, kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman who has known man by lying with him.

rsv@Numbers:31:18 @ But all the young girls who have not known man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves.

rsv@Numbers:31:19 @ Encamp outside the camp seven days; whoever of you has killed any person, and whoever has touched any slain, purify yourselves and your captives on the third day and on the seventh day.

rsv@Numbers:31:20 @ You shall purify every garment, every article of skin, all work of goats' hair, and every article of wood."

rsv@Numbers:31:21 @ And Elea'zar the priest said to the men of war who had gone to battle: "This is the statute of the law which the LORD has commanded Moses:

rsv@Numbers:31:22 @ only the gold, the silver, the bronze, the iron, the tin, and the lead,

rsv@Numbers:31:23 @ everything that can stand the fire, you shall pass through the fire, and it shall be clean. Nevertheless it shall also be purified with the water of impurity; and whatever cannot stand the fire, you shall pass through the water.

rsv@Numbers:31:24 @ You must wash your clothes on the seventh day, and you shall be clean; and afterward you shall come into the camp."

rsv@Numbers:31:25 @ The LORD said to Moses,

rsv@Numbers:31:26 @ "Take the count of the booty that was taken, both of man and of beast, you and Elea'zar the priest and the heads of the fathers' houses of the congregation;

rsv@Numbers:31:27 @ and divide the booty into two parts, between the warriors who went out to battle and all the congregation.

rsv@Numbers:31:28 @ And levy for the LORD a tribute from the men of war who went out to battle, one out of five hundred, of the persons and of the oxen and of the asses and of the flocks;

rsv@Numbers:31:29 @ take it from their half, and give it to Elea'zar the priest as an offering to the LORD.

rsv@Numbers:31:30 @ And from the people of Israel's half you shall take one drawn out of every fifty, of the persons, of the oxen, of the asses, and of the flocks, of all the cattle, and give them to the Levites who have charge of the tabernacle of the LORD."

rsv@Numbers:31:31 @ And Moses and Elea'zar the priest did as the LORD commanded Moses.

rsv@Numbers:31:32 @ Now the booty remaining of the spoil that the men of war took was: six hundred and seventy-five thousand sheep,

rsv@Numbers:31:33 @ seventy-two thousand cattle,

rsv@Numbers:31:34 @ sixty-one thousand asses,

rsv@Numbers:31:35 @ and thirty-two thousand persons in all, women who had not known man by lying with him.

rsv@Numbers:31:36 @ And the half, the portion of those who had gone out to war, was in number three hundred and thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep,

rsv@Numbers:31:37 @ and the LORD's tribute of sheep was six hundred and seventy-five.

rsv@Numbers:31:38 @ The cattle were thirty-six thousand, of which the LORD's tribute was seventy-two.

rsv@Numbers:31:39 @ The asses were thirty thousand five hundred, of which the LORD's tribute was sixty-one.

rsv@Numbers:31:40 @ The persons were sixteen thousand, of which the LORD's tribute was thirty-two persons.

rsv@Numbers:31:41 @ And Moses gave the tribute, which was the offering for the LORD, to Elea'zar the priest, as the LORD commanded Moses.

rsv@Numbers:31:42 @ From the people of Israel's half, which Moses separated from that of the men who had gone to war--

rsv@Numbers:31:43 @ now the congregation's half was three hundred and thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep,

rsv@Numbers:31:44 @ thirty-six thousand cattle,

rsv@Numbers:31:45 @ and thirty thousand five hundred asses,

rsv@Numbers:31:46 @ and sixteen thousand persons--

rsv@Numbers:31:47 @ from the people of Israel's half Moses took one of every fifty, both of persons and of beasts, and gave them to the Levites who had charge of the tabernacle of the LORD; as the LORD commanded Moses.

rsv@Numbers:31:48 @ Then the officers who were over the thousands of the army, the captains of thousands and the captains of hundreds, came near to Moses,

rsv@Numbers:31:49 @ and said to Moses, "Your servants have counted the men of war who are under our command, and there is not a man missing from us.

rsv@Numbers:31:50 @ And we have brought the LORD's offering, what each man found, articles of gold, armlets and bracelets, signet rings, earrings, and beads, to make atonement for ourselves before the LORD."

rsv@Numbers:31:51 @ And Moses and Elea'zar the priest received from them the gold, all wrought articles.

rsv@Numbers:31:52 @ And all the gold of the offering that they offered to the LORD, from the commanders of thousands and the commanders of hundreds, was sixteen thousand seven hundred and fifty shekels.

rsv@Numbers:31:53 @ (The men of war had taken booty, every man for himself.)

rsv@Numbers:31:54 @ And Moses and Elea'zar the priest received the gold from the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, and brought it into the tent of meeting, as a memorial for the people of Israel before the LORD.

rsv@Numbers:32:1 @ Now the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad had a very great multitude of cattle; and they saw the land of Jazer and the land of Gilead, and behold, the place was a place for cattle.

rsv@Numbers:32:2 @ So the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben came and said to Moses and to Elea'zar the priest and to the leaders of the congregation,

rsv@Numbers:32:3 @ "At'aroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elea'leh, Sebam, Nebo, and Be'on,

rsv@Numbers:32:4 @ the land which the LORD smote before the congregation of Israel, is a land for cattle; and your servants have cattle."

rsv@Numbers:32:5 @ And they said, "If we have found favor in your sight, let this land be given to your servants for a possession; do not take us across the Jordan."

rsv@Numbers:32:6 @ But Moses said to the sons of Gad and to the sons of Reuben, "Shall your brethren go to the war while you sit here?

rsv@Numbers:32:7 @ Why will you discourage the heart of the people of Israel from going over into the land which the LORD has given them?

rsv@Numbers:32:8 @ Thus did your fathers, when I sent them from Ka'desh-bar'nea to see the land.

rsv@Numbers:32:9 @ For when they went up to the Valley of Eshcol, and saw the land, they discouraged the heart of the people of Israel from going into the land which the LORD had given them.

rsv@Numbers:32:10 @ And the LORD's anger was kindled on that day, and he swore, saying,

rsv@Numbers:32:11 @ `Surely none of the men who came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land which I swore to give to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, because they have not wholly followed me;

rsv@Numbers:32:12 @ none except Caleb the son of Jephun'neh the Ken'izzite and Joshua the son of Nun, for they have wholly followed the LORD.'

rsv@Numbers:32:13 @ And the LORD's anger was kindled against Israel, and he made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until all the generation that had done evil in the sight of the LORD was consumed.

rsv@Numbers:32:14 @ And behold, you have risen in your fathers' stead, a brood of sinful men, to increase still more the fierce anger of the LORD against Israel!

rsv@Numbers:32:15 @ For if you turn away from following him, he will again abandon them in the wilderness; and you will destroy all this people."

rsv@Numbers:32:16 @ Then they came near to him, and said, "We will build sheepfolds here for our flocks, and cities for our little ones,

rsv@Numbers:32:17 @ but we will take up arms, ready to go before the people of Israel, until we have brought them to their place; and our little ones shall live in the fortified cities because of the inhabitants of the land.

rsv@Numbers:32:18 @ We will not return to our homes until the people of Israel have inherited each his inheritance.

rsv@Numbers:32:19 @ For we will not inherit with them on the other side of the Jordan and beyond; because our inheritance has come to us on this side of the Jordan to the east."

rsv@Numbers:32:20 @ So Moses said to them, "If you will do this, if you will take up arms to go before the LORD for the war,

rsv@Numbers:32:21 @ and every armed man of you will pass over the Jordan before the LORD, until he has driven out his enemies from before him

rsv@Numbers:32:22 @ and the land is subdued before the LORD; then after that you shall return and be free of obligation to the LORD and to Israel; and this land shall be your possession before the LORD.

rsv@Numbers:32:23 @ But if you will not do so, behold, you have sinned against the LORD; and be sure your sin will find you out.

rsv@Numbers:32:24 @ Build cities for your little ones, and folds for your sheep; and do what you have promised."

rsv@Numbers:32:25 @ And the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben said to Moses, "Your servants will do as my lord commands.

rsv@Numbers:32:26 @ Our little ones, our wives, our flocks, and all our cattle, shall remain there in the cities of Gilead;

rsv@Numbers:32:27 @ but your servants will pass over, every man who is armed for war, before the LORD to battle, as my lord orders."

rsv@Numbers:32:28 @ So Moses gave command concerning them to Elea'zar the priest, and to Joshua the son of Nun, and to the heads of the fathers' houses of the tribes of the people of Israel.

rsv@Numbers:32:29 @ And Moses said to them, "If the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben, every man who is armed to battle before the LORD, will pass with you over the Jordan and the land shall be subdued before you, then you shall give them the land of Gilead for a possession;

rsv@Numbers:32:30 @ but if they will not pass over with you armed, they shall have possessions among you in the land of Canaan."

rsv@Numbers:32:31 @ And the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben answered, "As the LORD has said to your servants, so we will do.

rsv@Numbers:32:32 @ We will pass over armed before the LORD into the land of Canaan, and the possession of our inheritance shall remain with us beyond the Jordan."

rsv@Numbers:32:33 @ And Moses gave to them, to the sons of Gad and to the sons of Reuben and to the half-tribe of Manas'seh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land and its cities with their territories, the cities of the land throughout the country.

rsv@Numbers:32:34 @ And the sons of Gad built Dibon, At'aroth, Aro'er,

rsv@Numbers:32:35 @ At'roth-sho'phan, Jazer, Jog'behah,

rsv@Numbers:32:36 @ Beth-nim'rah and Beth-har'an, fortified cities, and folds for sheep.

rsv@Numbers:32:37 @ And the sons of Reuben built Heshbon, Elea'leh, Kiriatha'im,

rsv@Numbers:32:38 @ Nebo, and Ba'al-me'on (their names to be changed), and Sibmah; and they gave other names to the cities which they built.

rsv@Numbers:32:39 @ And the sons of Machir the son of Manas'seh went to Gilead and took it, and dispossessed the Amorites who were in it.

rsv@Numbers:32:40 @ And Moses gave Gilead to Machir the son of Manas'seh, and he settled in it.

rsv@Numbers:32:41 @ And Ja'ir the son of Manas'seh went and took their villages, and called them Hav'voth-ja'ir.

rsv@Numbers:32:42 @ And Nobah went and took Kenath and its villages, and called it Nobah, after his own name.

rsv@Numbers:33:1 @ These are the stages of the people of Israel, when they went forth out of the land of Egypt by their hosts under the leadership of Moses and Aaron.

rsv@Numbers:33:2 @ Moses wrote down their starting places, stage by stage, by command of the LORD; and these are their stages according to their starting places.

rsv@Numbers:33:3 @ They set out from Ram'eses in the first month, on the fifteenth day of the first month; on the day after the passover the people of Israel went out triumphantly in the sight of all the Egyptians,

rsv@Numbers:33:4 @ while the Egyptians were burying all their first-born, whom the LORD had struck down among them; upon their gods also the LORD executed judgments.

rsv@Numbers:33:5 @ So the people of Israel set out from Ram'eses, and encamped at Succoth.

rsv@Numbers:33:6 @ And they set out from Succoth, and encamped at Etham, which is on the edge of the wilderness.

rsv@Numbers:33:7 @ And they set out from Etham, and turned back to Pi-hahi'roth, which is east of Ba'al-ze'phon; and they encamped before Migdol.

rsv@Numbers:33:8 @ And they set out from before Hahi'roth, and passed through the midst of the sea into the wilderness, and they went a three days' journey in the wilderness of Etham, and encamped at Marah.

rsv@Numbers:33:9 @ And they set out from Marah, and came to Elim; at Elim there were twelve springs of water and seventy palm trees, and they encamped there.

rsv@Numbers:33:10 @ And they set out from Elim, and encamped by the Red Sea.

rsv@Numbers:33:11 @ And they set out from the Red Sea, and encamped in the wilderness of Sin.

rsv@Numbers:33:12 @ And they set out from the wilderness of Sin, and encamped at Dophkah.

rsv@Numbers:33:13 @ And they set out from Dophkah, and encamped at Alush.

rsv@Numbers:33:14 @ And they set out from Alush, and encamped at Reph'idim, where there was no water for the people to drink.

rsv@Numbers:33:15 @ And they set out from Reph'idim, and encamped in the wilderness of Sinai.

rsv@Numbers:33:16 @ And they set out from the wilderness of Sinai, and encamped at Kib'roth-hatta'avah.

rsv@Numbers:33:17 @ And they set out from Kib'roth-hatta'avah, and encamped at Haze'roth.

rsv@Numbers:33:18 @ And they set out from Haze'roth, and encamped at Rithmah.

rsv@Numbers:33:19 @ And they set out from Rithmah, and encamped at Rim'mon-per'ez.

rsv@Numbers:33:20 @ And they set out from Rim'mon-per'ez, and encamped at Libnah.

rsv@Numbers:33:21 @ And they set out from Libnah, and encamped at Rissah.

rsv@Numbers:33:22 @ And they set out from Rissah, and encamped at Kehela'thah.

rsv@Numbers:33:23 @ And they set out from Kehela'thah, and encamped at Mount Shepher.

rsv@Numbers:33:24 @ And they set out from Mount Shepher, and encamped at Hara'dah.

rsv@Numbers:33:25 @ And they set out from Hara'dah, and encamped at Makhe'loth.

rsv@Numbers:33:26 @ And they set out from Makhe'loth, and encamped at Tahath.

rsv@Numbers:33:27 @ And they set out from Tahath, and encamped at Terah.

rsv@Numbers:33:28 @ And they set out from Terah, and encamped at Mithkah.

rsv@Numbers:33:29 @ And they set out from Mithkah, and encamped at Hashmo'nah.

rsv@Numbers:33:30 @ And they set out from Hashmo'nah, and encamped at Mose'roth.

rsv@Numbers:33:31 @ And they set out from Mose'roth, and encamped at Bene-ja'akan.

rsv@Numbers:33:32 @ And they set out from Bene-ja'akan, and encamped at Hor-haggid'gad.

rsv@Numbers:33:33 @ And they set out from Hor-haggid'gad, and encamped at Jot'bathah.

rsv@Numbers:33:34 @ And they set out from Jot'bathah, and encamped at Abro'nah.

rsv@Numbers:33:35 @ And they set out from Abro'nah, and encamped at E'zion-ge'ber.

rsv@Numbers:33:36 @ And they set out from E'zion-ge'ber, and encamped in the wilderness of Zin (that is, Kadesh).

rsv@Numbers:33:37 @ And they set out from Kadesh, and encamped at Mount Hor, on the edge of the land of Edom.

rsv@Numbers:33:38 @ And Aaron the priest went up Mount Hor at the command of the LORD, and died there, in the fortieth year after the people of Israel had come out of the land of Egypt, on the first day of the fifth month.

rsv@Numbers:33:39 @ And Aaron was a hundred and twenty-three years old when he died on Mount Hor.

rsv@Numbers:33:40 @ And the Canaanite, the king of Arad, who dwelt in the Negeb in the land of Canaan, heard of the coming of the people of Israel.

rsv@Numbers:33:41 @ And they set out from Mount Hor, and encamped at Zalmo'nah.

rsv@Numbers:33:42 @ And they set out from Zalmo'nah, and encamped at Punon.

rsv@Numbers:33:43 @ And they set out from Punon, and encamped at Oboth.

rsv@Numbers:33:44 @ And they set out from Oboth, and encamped at I'ye-ab'arim, in the territory of Moab.

rsv@Numbers:33:45 @ And they set out from I'yim, and encamped at Dibon-gad.

rsv@Numbers:33:46 @ And they set out from Dibon-gad, and encamped at Al'mon-diblatha'im.

rsv@Numbers:33:47 @ And they set out from Al'mon-diblatha'im, and encamped in the mountains of Ab'arim, before Nebo.

rsv@Numbers:33:48 @ And they set out from the mountains of Ab'arim, and encamped in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho;

rsv@Numbers:33:49 @ they encamped by the Jordan from Beth-jes'himoth as far as Abel-shittim in the plains of Moab.

rsv@Numbers:33:50 @ And the LORD said to Moses in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho,

rsv@Numbers:33:51 @ "Say to the people of Israel, When you pass over the Jordan into the land of Canaan,

rsv@Numbers:33:52 @ then you shall drive out all the inhabitants of the land from before you, and destroy all their figured stones, and destroy all their molten images, and demolish all their high places;

rsv@Numbers:33:53 @ and you shall take possession of the land and settle in it, for I have given the land to you to possess it.

rsv@Numbers:33:54 @ You shall inherit the land by lot according to your families; to a large tribe you shall give a large inheritance, and to a small tribe you shall give a small inheritance; wherever the lot falls to any man, that shall be his; according to the tribes of your fathers you shall inherit.

rsv@Numbers:33:55 @ But if you do not drive out the inhabitants of the land from before you, then those of them whom you let remain shall be as pricks in your eyes and thorns in your sides, and they shall trouble you in the land where you dwell.

rsv@Numbers:33:56 @ And I will do to you as I thought to do to them."

rsv@Numbers:34:1 @ The LORD said to Moses,
