Today's Verse:

kjv@Luke:9:37-45

kjv@Luke:9:37 @ And it came to pass, that on the next day, when they were come down from the hill, much people met him.

kjv@Luke:9:38 @ And, behold, a man of the company cried out, saying, Master, I beseech thee, look upon my son: for he is mine only child.

kjv@Luke:9:39 @ And, lo, a spirit taketh him, and he suddenly crieth out; and it teareth him that he foameth again, and bruising him hardly departeth from him.

kjv@Luke:9:40 @ And I besought thy disciples to cast him out; and they could not.

kjv@Luke:9:41 @ And Jesus answering said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you, and suffer you? Bring thy son hither.

kjv@Luke:9:42 @ And as he was yet a coming, the devil threw him down, and tare him. And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the child, and delivered him again to his father.

kjv@Luke:9:43 @ And they were all amazed at the mighty power of God. But while they wondered every one at all things which Jesus did, he said unto his disciples,

kjv@Luke:9:44 @ Let these sayings sink down into your ears: for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men.

kjv@Luke:9:45 @ But they understood not this saying, and it was hid from them, that they perceived it not: and they feared to ask him of that saying.

Notes:

The question Smith discusses dict:smith Demoniacs is an important one to consider so as to draw out the matter of certainty. Are these typical physical diseases being left in the non-scientific Jewish vernacular of that time? Are these typical physical diseases that have been brought upon by demons in certain but not all cases? Are these typical physical diseases that in addition have been complicated by/fed upon by demons?

Regardless of the origin and possession of unclean demonic spirits, the certainty of the passage rests in that the disciples were unable to do as commanded in at least one particular case. How then to explain Jesus' response? Neither disciple nor beseeching father make a faithless/perverse generation, but either or both or even all can be a product of it. We can amount to that because we don't believe in the possession and effect of demons; or we can be that because that we do. We can be that because we don't believe that other men empowered by Christ's command can do as Christ; or the men themselves can be that because that they doubt the power of such command. The idea is that we are that as a whole, as a generation, because in all ways and various shapes that is in fact our nature; faithless and perverse. It is not an accusation as much as it is a statement of clear sighted direct observation. The complexity and awkwardness of the present in all it's forms is because of the raw simplicity of these two vacated spiritual elements. It is why man is such easy prey and why even having been commanded restoration is not just plain matter.

The remedy pointed to in other accounts is much prayer and fasting. Not by the demoniac patient mind you, but for the consecration to God's anointed task by the appointed servant healers. In Luke's account the emphasis is placed on the soon giving of Christ into the hands of men for sacrifice. The two emphasis together paint a larger picture of why and how and in what manner the servant of the Lord is to carry His continued work about. If there is further proof needed as to a faithless and perverse generation, it is that the meaning of these things was still hidden from perception perhaps not so much by individual choice, but the corporate shadow of the present state and generations preceding the work of Christ accomplishing what would be required to lift such a thick mortal fog.

Perhaps we should also consider which is the worse, being possessed by an unclean spirit that can be cast out? else being of a faithless/perverse generation with heart hardened to the things of God which cannot?
