Today's notes: That That Deceiver
Context:
- Before - begging the body
- After - Come see the place
What is man believing/doing?:
- On Sabbath going to Pilate to have him secure the burial site another two days
- calling Jesus "that deceiver"
- commanding the sepulchre be made sure by guards
- putting a seal across the stone
What is making man to believe/do as he is doing?:
- suspecting the His disciples were going to stage something mimicking resurrection
- using the accusative to frame the decision the way they wanted it to go
- preferring his own guards take this over
- to detect tampering
Notes:
The Bible is transparent about the fact that the grave site had not been secure for the entire first night. This leaves matters open for suspicion/conspiracy by it's critics. Matters surely would have been open anyway. What one must consider though is the thought process of both the Priests and Pilate for not having secured the site any earlier. Why was this not planned for from the start? My suspicion logically? It was... one or both parties were purposely attempting to bait the hook for someone down the chain to take the fall.
Options on the Council's part:
- If the disciples do nothing and Jesus does not rise the evidence is intact, the guard would have prevented the disciples from attempting anything after the first night.
- Baiting disciples - If the disciples did make an attempt it would have been the first unguarded night, the woman would have been able to notify them that the site was yet unguarded, it would have to be staged to appear to have transpired the third day to fulfill the prophecy, the guards would know of it the second day.
- Baiting guards - If the disciples do nothing but Jesus does rise, the soldiers could be accused of abandonment of duty or else the soldiers would have to stage a overwhelming struggle with disciples (or someone else) that were not ever there.
Key Messages:
What does this say about our present condition?
- Allegations of deception and conspiracy historically have been close to impossible to disprove and adequately squelch even by sound logic. Even fact becomes suspect, the burden of proof illogically becomes the accused. To the un-pure of heart all things are defiled. Such allegations typically are pointed toward the governing bodies and powers that be, greatly exaggerating their power and intent. These entities are well versed at receiving these allegations and are even known to perpetuate them even when false if doing so serves their greater needs. Is it any stretch to suggests then that they also are versed enough to plant them of their own against their opposition?
