Today's Verse:

kjv@Luke:12:13-21

kjv@Luke:12:13 @ And one of the company said unto him, Master, speak to my brother, that he divide the inheritance with me.

kjv@Luke:12:14 @ And he said unto him, Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you?

kjv@Luke:12:15 @ And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.

kjv@Luke:12:16 @ And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully:

kjv@Luke:12:17 @ And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits?

kjv@Luke:12:18 @ And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods.

kjv@Luke:12:19 @ And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.

kjv@Luke:12:20 @ But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?

kjv@Luke:12:21 @ So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.

Notes:

If the man making this approach had rightful claim he likely would have stated it. The fact that he is not stating evidences of wrong doing by his brother simply implying it, which is reason for much caution. Town counsels have long been established to resolve such claims. Therefore we might might be able to deduce that the man has either avoided the counsel or has been denied additional right by said counsel. It is not indicated whether the father is of recent decease and the elder is freshly distributing the estate or else the younger has bartered/surrendered to the elder his distribution and now wants it back. In any respect Jesus is identifying toxic levels of covetousness on this man's part.

In the same breath that Jesus says He has not be made judge/divider over him in these familial issues, He makes implication that a man's soul will be required by Him at the judgment. While all that each man and women is and has is entirely subject to God alone, God has delegated certain measures of HIS authority at present time to nations and districts and municipalities and local civic/religious counsels on HIS behalf. Though these principalities are imperfect, sometimes even corrupt and scandalous (just as all individuals and all society), they are presently ordained and empowered by HIM to keep a reasonable level of control over the growth and further influence of even greater corruptions including widespread covetousness and lawlessness. These institutions are left run mostly as man sees fit, however are also influenced by the needs of standing for the majority and also the oppressed in view of the entity's self preservation/security thus longevity. In the list of evidences as to a man's covetousness it can be added the observance of a man attempting to bypass or bend to his favor the ordinances of God's civic delegations for his own gain. This makes him to be all the more liable in his accounting to God for his very soul.

It is often our sense of fairness and balance that the covetous call upon to make their way. Unless one is willing to invest themselves into the truth of the matter else see the avoidance of normal courses for what it is one will always be in cohorts with the covetous being so easily manipulated. Not all allegations of injustice are injustice in deed; some are simple slight. Why would Jesus or even His followers be party to slight when there is so much better unjust cause to war against?

To the Jewish Hebrew the issue of inheritance is made all the more important as it depicts and is a literal continuation of God's inheritance being graciously and with eternal purpose given perpetually to them as a people. Might we also suggest that even if the man were completely within his rights in this mortal world he may not be in the frame of heart because of it for receiving his greater inheritance from Christ of the eternal kingdom.
