The first is pictured as the water of baptism, Jesus volunteerly submitted Himself to both to prove Himself sent from God and to be in a position to take away the sins of man. The second is the described as the fire of purging or purification which He does in order for there to be peace. The one is hateful and self righteous on man's part directed at Christ and His followers. The other is done in great part for the unrighteous whose sin still can be taken away, those that He died for that they might receive their calling to glory and virtue. This understanding is crucial in order to understanding the next part. It is the belief of man that they and therefore God (it's implied) simply wants peace. Peace for the sake of peace. If all was at peace, all would be right. Talk of judgment, to this way of thinking, is talk of intolerance,of putting one's religion above another's. It is contrary to their beliefs that they (the many) may not even pass the judgment unless they right now change their heart and ways. Thus we begin see two different approaches to peace, the second appearing to be nearly opposite to the intention. The second by doctrine suggests that man will never have peace until all things are made right. Man cannot make things right until after God removes the influence of iniquity from them; there will be those in the end who will not let go of it. Peace comes after purification and purification comes in the risen Christ's anticipated return. God's righteousness makes for peace not man's godless desire and tolerance for peace. It could be said the Christ has had two millenniums now to prove His return and thus bring His peace. It can just as well be said the man has had two millenniums to prove his peace yet has proven nothing of it. Why would Christ delay peace? To patiently make His point and because His peace comes at an irreversible cost. Why would man delay peace? He has no reason, in fact has had every reason to prove Christ wrong but has not. Much of man's peace (what little there is) is little more than the illusion of peace; the illusion of justice, the illusion of government, the illusion of security, the illusion of wealth. What is actually there has been largely puffed up to appear more than it is, plus it is but a few days economically from collapse. There is also the matter of much of the peace that we do have we have only because of God; should He pull the table of His peace but for a moment the dishes of our vanity would quickly fall. So the understanding of these two opposing approaches brings us to the consideration of three on two within the same family. Not only does the disciple need to be mindful of the context of covetousness/seeking the kingdom/wakened girded and engaged light bearing servants doing the Lord's work, but also the likely result of intense division among one's own family members for righteousness and eventual peace sake.
