( FaithOfJesus thread begun by RandyP )

Today's Verse:

kjv@Luke:22:39-46

kjv@Luke:22:39 @ And he came out, and went, as he was wont, to the mount of Olives; and his disciples also followed him.

kjv@Luke:22:40 @ And when he was at the place, he said unto them, Pray that ye enter not into temptation.

kjv@Luke:22:41 @ And he was withdrawn from them about a stone's cast, and kneeled down, and prayed,

kjv@Luke:22:42 @ Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.

kjv@Luke:22:43 @ And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him.

kjv@Luke:22:44 @ And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

kjv@Luke:22:45 @ And when he rose up from prayer, and was come to his disciples, he found them sleeping for sorrow,

kjv@Luke:22:46 @ And said unto them, Why sleep ye? rise and pray, lest ye enter into temptation.

Notes:

The certainty continues from here on out that what Jesus is going through now is not by man's hand directly, but by God's. In His spirit, Jesus is more than ready for all of this; it is to the purpose for which He had come (been sent). In human flesh however, the weight of sheer agony brought upon Him by God is breaking the body down rapidly already to the point of blood coming through it's pores. An angel is sent early on in this agony prior to the evidence of blood to strengthen the human flesh of Jesus in order to make it possible to continue physically further toward the cross. It is His soul however bearing the unbuffered direct onslaught of the entirety of all agony.

The few select disciples are exhorted to watch and pray. Why? Because with them the spirit is perhaps ready, but their flesh is still much to weak to observe this. Weak in what respect? Watching Him a stone throw away and what He is going through and audibly praying about spiritually may be by them somewhat anticipated and prepared for (even to an extent humanly understood), but to actually see Him physically go through this causes their flesh to be tempted to do something if not to end it at least then to buffet it (which in this one case would be great sin in itself). Given the options in dealing with their own unimaginable sorrow to watch upon this, perhaps sleep itself is a odd reactive answer to prayer.

Perhaps we are asleep as well from the reality of what is being presented here. We certainly are soon to awaken to the sounds of whips and stones and spittle and jabs of barbed thorns upon His flesh, such as if other men were willing could do unto us, but for sorrow slumber so not to see our own inability to prevent/comfort Jesus from what is unknowingly much much more than just this physical this, that which is the true and solitary agony of the Christ experience, the stripes deserved upon all mankind's sin instead by the Father placed squarely upon Him; the stripes already beginning to appear on Him prior to any man's rash infliction, those by which we are truly healed.

Key Messages:

Given this certainty what then are we to pray?

kjv@Psalms:19:13 @ Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression.

kjv@Psalms:119:116 @ Uphold me according unto thy word, that I may live: and let me not be ashamed of my hope.

kjv@Matthew:6:13 @ And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
