Notes:

Some would take from this that the Sabbath must not mean all that much if it is open to this much interpretation. The thought could not be further. There are some key points to consider.

First, imagine the irony that the Lord of the Sabbath, the one who came up with it and whom it it is directed towards is being condemned by certain men's (leaders) confiscation of it. Would not that fact alone rather condemn the men's confiscation of it. It is not so much Jesus' interpretation of it that maddens them so for He backs it with scriptural examples, it is His claim to be the Lord God in it.

Second, Jesus often declares that He can do nothing of His own except what the Father shows Him. On this particular Sabbath the Father is showing Him to heal, why not then heal? He is being judged for His obedience. Counter this by the fact that He knows going into the Sabbath that they are going into this only to find accusation against Him. Which better keeps the Sabbath sanctified as holy, obeying the Father to heal the poor man's withered hand or going into the Sabbath with the intent of publicly entrapping the Lord of the Sabbath so that you might further find cause to accuse Him before the brethren?

Two separate Sabbath events Luke ties together to make his point, one of what Jesus allowed His hungered vowed to poverty Disciples to do at least on this one instance, two what He Himself did to help a very needy man. Neither of these two cases constitute an abandonment of the Sabbath principals. Neither equate to the various self directed rationalizations we use to excuse ourselves from observing the holy day.

The Apostles later approached the Sabbath with much vigor although their Sabbath became the Sunday first day of the week, the day of it's Lord's resurrection. They also were judged harshly by the legalist's for this non-traditional observance. The lesson might well be that the legalist will always find something to judge other's over because that is the primary nature of it; it seeks to find that which it can judge and accuse before all other things.
