What is God's righteousness observed doing?:
- Moving with compassion for the leper, willing for the leper to be clean
- Having Jesus put forth His hand and touching
- Cleansing before any further stipulation, charging obedience after the fact knowing the likely disobedience, charging so though aware the likely consequence to it's own endeavors. Seeking the obedience to testify to the law of Moses and not to the general public.
What does this tell us about God's righteousness?:
- The will for this time was not to rid all leprosy, but to cleanse this particular case.
- It is not shy about directly coming into contact with that which is unclean, physically consuming, contagious.
- The law is not doing the actual cleansing, it is receiving/verifying the testimony that the leprosy has been cleansed.
How is man reacting?:
- Disobedient to the charge either in conscious rebellion or in mis directed gratitude thinking that it knows better how to properly respond.
Notes:
It would be hard/impossible to cleansing keep this secret for long. The man's wholesome family/community that he would be returning to knows the man only to be a leper. That said, it would have been more prudent in respect to them for the man to have his cleansing verified by a trust-able source. Having not respected them in this regard would produce concern and unneeded threat and public contention. Because the man is seen in an endangering light so then is His unverified cleanser - Jesus.
Leprosy is symbolic of mankind's horrid/repulsive sin condition and mandatory separation from the clean.
Key Messages:
What does this say about our present condition?
- Neither is man aware of the reactions and consequences possible, but it is not of his prime concern. Gratitude for being able to get back to one's normal life can trump the gratitude due the one making such normalcy possible.
- Rebellion is not always doing what is known to be wrong, it is often the consequence of doing what is thought to be right in one's own judgment at the expense (intentional or unintentional) of another's. It can also be observed in doing what is right shortsighted-ly.
