Today's notes: He Gave Them Power

Context:

Before - pray that laborers be sent
After - wisdom justified of her children

What is man believing/doing?:

disciples being sent to house of Israel
city folks receiving disciples presence and message by hosting and providing for their needs
city folks rejecting disciples presence and message by not hosting and providing for their needs, by persecuting them and delivering them up to counsels

What is making man to believe/do as he is doing?:

command of Jesus to go nowhere else, spiritual empowerment given by Jesus
acceptance of Christ and Father, a share in the reward
rejection of Christ, linking to Satan, pressure of division and rift, fear of death

Notes:

The principal of a workman's worth is given as the reason behind the disciples not preparing/providing for themselves. It is a test of the others more so than it is a test of the disciple. How much is it worth to have the Gospel preached in your community? To have the sick healed and possessed liberated? Is it worth being hospitable to the cause? Is it worth standing up to the inhospitable contentions of others even within your own family? If so there is similar persecution yes, but there is reward as well.

The principal of going only to the house of Israel is most important at this stage. Let it not be said that Jesus did not give every effort to bringing the children of Abraham over into the right, that He was somehow too distracted or too easily abandoned them or was too greedy for the acceptance of all. This is not a second or offshoot religion, it is the position where God has determined the the righteous elect should be. Before the invitation can be given to the outsiders it must be decided on by insiders

Key Messages:

What does this say about our present condition?

There is a safe level for all of this talk as long as it remains distant and theoretical. Jesus can go about doing His thing in another corner making the sick better and inspiring others to be better people if He must, but when He starts sending His followers into our corner endangering our peace that level is no longer safe or tolerable.
Peace is our goal not truth and justice and the well being of others. These things disturb the peace. They call upon men to stand firm and advance certain notions that call all of our reasoning into question. This in the case of Israel means peace even at the hands of being greatly oppressed, being a possession of a foreign power, having the very things your people have long believed and fought for sullied or stolen or heavily adulterated. Such peace is a mere appearance, an avoidance of the turbulence that swells beneath.
We see the disciples faithfulness as their test not ours. If the disciple is doing without it is as God has determined it should be, not because we have failed the disciple on our part.
