Context:
- Before - blood money
- After - the scarlet robe
What is man believing/doing?:
- making their case against Jesus to Pilate
- seeking a response or plea from the defendant Jesus
- offering a deal to the Jews to let either Jesus or a convicted thieving murderous insurrectionist
- calling her husband from the judgment seat
- being overwhelmed with the working of the crowd into a tumult
What is making man to believe/do as he is doing?:
- they do not have the authority to execute anybody, they have chosen to keep this above the board in the public eye
- The accusations stated are a concern of state given the elders vehement opposition and political tumult, but civilly are unfounded. They are quickly summized to be the rotted work of intense jealousy.
- to test their firmness of their resolve and political will/persuasiveness over the crowd that is gathering
- suffering through the day due to a dream concerning Him being just
- ?expecting to prevail with such obvious moral and legal contrast or else underestimating the elites ability sway the crowd
Notes:
envy isn't it an interesting discription of what Pilate saw behind all of this?
Remember from earlier Jesus sweating blood? an angel ministering to Him in order to continue receiving the penalty for all sin? What man is doing here seems almost to be a side show; the wheels of a broken cart being drug to it's destination. This is really a momentary trial of what the Sanhedrin Chiefs and Elders would be willing and capable of mustering up. Pilate certainly wasn't going to do something either direction that was going lessen his hold over this forsaken territory. Had they not been able to persuade/provoke the crowds into fanatical rabid support, Jesus would have likely walked away free. Having proven their weight formidable and their support as capable of overwhelming any thought of dissent, Pilate is able to wash his hands of the matter with Jerusalem and Rome (but not with the court of the Living God). What man plan's to do from here out is rather concurrent, much lesser in measure than what is happening upon Him spiritually (as it is God's punishment deserved upon man and not man's punishment upon Him dished up).
This is also a trial of an unsuspecting mob and what they would be willing to do to have things remain the same as they were and to fit in without such turmoil.
Key Messages:
What does this say about our present condition?
- It is not much a price to pay if only to be scourged and smitten, mocked and crucified. Similar I suppose to what other just men have unjustly suffered. If that is all that it is it might be well for each one of us to consider paying for ourselves. Frankly though, it is only that because this is what we choose to make it. Our sin is little because His sacrifice is made this little. Our pain and hunger for the lost and weary soul is little because His pain and hunger are made to be this little. The need and urgency to repent is this little because the life/death/resurrection of Jesus is made to be this confusing and unspoken. Unrighteousness and righteousness can be made to comfortably balance together because the righteousness we weigh it against is nothing more than our own righteousness and not the overwhelming/unconsidered price of His.
