Key Messages:
What does this say about our present condition?
- Man often invents an image of God that is unsustainable and asks of it to provide for all his needs. What are the chances of him receiving any of that?
- Many intend to go about finding their answers by their own means regardless, all that they are really asking is for God to bless their own way.
- Many see God strictly as a force that can be directed wherever they themselves see fit (they are the god, he is their empowerment)
- "Whatsoever ye ask" if it has no base in His righteousness, if it works against His word or the establishment of His work upon us individually and as a body, if it is to prolong a situation that one should not have been in to begin with, then "whatsoever" is a serpent. What child would ask of his father a serpent knowing the danger to everyone else in the house?
- Christian and non-Christian alike are willing to quote this passage with the same understanding/intent; which should alert us to the possibility that they both have the meaning wrong.
