Today's notes: A Great Tempest
Context:
- Before - follow, let dead bury dead
- After - before the time
What is man believing/doing?:
- fearing that they will perish
- fighting against the storm by their own resource
- waking Jesus
What is making man to believe/do as he is doing?:
- ship covered with waves, they can no longer fight against such overwhelming nature, their resource is no longer enough, they are seeing the situation in human terms
Notes:
Notice that the wind and sea obeying immediately follows the following and letting the dead bury the dead. It is likely meant that the disciples were already on board with the obedient following of the Lord, they were in this predicament because of their obedience to Him and were being met with opposition that was just as much opposition to Him. The only way for them through this was to rely on Him and His obedience to the Father. It took them coming to the end of their resource however to find this all out.
Key Messages:
What does this say about our present condition?
- Faith is often seen simply as items which one is willing to believe/hope for instead of items one is willing to obey/follow wherever it leads. Willingness to obey/follow is likely to be tested by pressures and forces against, large as the near impossibilities such as tempests, down to earth as practicalities such as burying the dead, to which we attempt to apply our own resource. Faith is little because it is enough to get some into the boat, but not enough to keep us from struggling against the swelling pressures by our own resource to get across.
- We tend to fight long and hard ourselves and reach the point of frightful defeat before involving the Lord. The point isn't that the Lord is overly tired it is that we did not bother to involve Him before this.
