Does Doctrine Divide?

  1. Yes, and it should, there is no way around it. (best examples =)

  2. Doctrine closely linked to reproof and correction requires being endured/separation from other contrary doctrines
  3. "The preaching of God's word is hateful and contrary unto them. Why? For it is impossible to preach Christ, except thou preach against antichrist; that is to say, them which with their false doctrine and violence of sword enforce to quench the true doctrine of Christ". - William Tyndale

Gospel = Doctrine

Can we say that gospel shall not be preached because it is divisive?

Somethings = Hard

kjv@2Peter:3:15-16 @ And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you; As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.

Dogma vs Doctrine

'In general, doctrine is all Church teaching in matters of faith and morals. Dogma is more narrowly defined as that part of doctrine which has been divinely revealed and which the Church has formally defined and declared to be believed as revealed.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains, "The Church’s magisterium exercises the authority it holds from Christ to the fullest extent when it defines dogmas, that is, when it proposes, in a form obliging the Christian people to an irrevocable adherence of faith, truths contained in divine Revelation or also when it proposes, in a definitive way, truths having a necessary connection with these". (CCC 88)'http://www.catholic.com/qa/what-is-the-difference-between-doctrine-and-dogma

'Cardinal Avery Dulles explains the present meaning of the term: In current Catholic usage, the term “dogma” means a divinely revealed truth, proclaimed as such by the infallible teaching authority of the Church, and hence binding on all the faithful without exception, now and forever. THE FIVE BASIC DOCTRINES ("The Fundamentals" edited by R.A. Torrey with contributors such as H.A. Ironside and C.I. Scofield) (http://deceptioninthechurch.com/5doctrines.html)

1. The Trinity: God is one "What" and three "Whos" with each "Who" possessing all the attributes of Deity and personality.
(divisive?)

2. The Person of Jesus Christ: Jesus is 100% God and 100% man for all eternity.
(divisive?)

3. The Second Coming: Jesus Christ is coming bodily to earth to rule and judge.
(divisive?)

4. Salvation: It is by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone.
(divisive?)

5. The Scripture: It is entirely inerrant and sufficient for all Christian life.
(divisive?)

Quotes (http://www.christianquotes.info/quotes-by-topic/quotes-about-doctrine/ )

“He that has doctrinal knowledge and speculation only, without affection, never is engaged in the business of religion.” ― Jonathan Edwards

“For my own part, I tend to find the doctrinal books often more helpful in devotion than the devotional books, and I rather suspect that the same experience may await others. I believe that many who find that ‘nothing happens’ when they sit down, or kneel down, to a book of devotion, would find that the heart sings unbidden while they are working their way through a tough bit of theology with a pipe in their teeth and a pencil in their hand.” ― C.S. Lewis, God in the Dock: Essays on Theology and Ethics

“Good conduct arises out of good doctrine.” ― John Stott

“Adjust your doctrine - or just minimize doctrine - to attract the world, and in the very process of attracting them, lose the radical truth that alone can set them free.” ― John Piper

"Doctrine is useless if it is not accompanied by a holy life. It is worse than useless; it does positive harm. Something of 'the image of Christ' must be seen and observed by others in our private life, and habits, and character, and doings". - J. C. Ryle

"The foundation of true holiness and true Christian worship is the doctrine of the gospel, what we are to believe. So when Christian doctrine is neglected, forsaken, or corrupted, true holiness and worship will also be neglected, forsaken, and corrupted". - John Owen

"You can have all of your doctrines right - yet still not have the presence of God". - Leonard Ravenhill

"There is scarcely anything so dull and meaningless as Bible doctrine taught for its own sake. Truth divorced from life is not truth in its biblical sense, but something else and something less". - A. W. Tozer

"Christians should not be content merely with knowing mentally the doctrine of the Holy Spirit as given in the Bible; they also need to know Him experimentally". - Watchman Nee

"I firmly believe people have hitherto been a great deal too much taken up about doctrine and far too little about practice. The word "doctrine," as used in the Bible, means teaching of duty, not theory". - George Macdonald

"While the state of Venice was free from inquisitors, a great number of Protestants fixed their residence there, and many converts were made by the purity of the doctrines they professed, and the inoffensiveness of the conversation they used". - John Foxe

"Those who teach by their doctrine must teach by their life, or else they pull down with one hand what they build up with the other". - Matthew Henry
