HARA - H>@ - (mountain land), ( kjv@1Chronicles:5:26) only, is either a place utterly unknown or it must be regarded as identical with Haran or Charran.

HARADAH - H>@ - (fear), a desert station of the Israelites, kjv@Numbers:33:24-25) its position is uncertain.

HARAN - H>@ - (a mountaineer). The third son of Terah, and therefore youngest brother of Abram. kjv@Genesis:11:26) (B.C. 1926.) Three children are ascribed to him
Lot, vs. kjv@Genesis:11:27 kjv@Genesis:11:31) and two daughters, viz., Milcah, who married her uncle Nahor, ver. kjv@Genesis:11:29) and Iscah. ver. kjv@Genesis:11:29) Haran was born in Ur of the Chaldees, and he died there while his father was still living. ver. kjv@Genesis:11:28) A Gershonite Levite in the time of David, one of the family of Shimei. ( kjv@1Chronicles:23:9) A son of the great Caleb by his concubine Ephah. ( kjv@1Chronicles:2:46) HARAN or CHARRAN, kjv@Acts:7:2-4) name of the place whither Abraham migrated with his family from Ur of the Chaldees, and where the descendants of his brother Nahor established themselves. Comp. kjv@Genesis:24:10) with kjv@Genesis:27:43 It is said to be in Mesopotamia, kjv@Genesis:24:10) or more definitely in Padan-aram, ch. kjv@Genesis:25:20) the cultivated district at the foot of the hills, a name well applying to the beautiful stretch of country which lies below Mount Masius between the Khabour and the Euphrates. Here, about midway in this district, is a small village still called Harran . It was celebrated among the Romans, under the name of Charrae, as the scene of the defeat of Crassus.

HARARITE - H>@ - (the mountaineer), The. The destination of three of David’s guard. Agee, a Hararite (2 Samuel 23:11) Shammah the Hararite. (2 Samuel 23:33) Sharar, (2 Samuel 23:33) or Sacar, ( kjv@1Chronicles:11:35) the Hararite, was the father of Ahiam, another member of the guard.

HARBONA - H>@ - (ass-driver), the third of the seven chamberlains or eunuchs who served King Ahasuerus. kjv@Esther:1:10) (B.C. 483-475.)

HARBONAH - H>@ - kjv@Esther:7:9) the same as the preceding.

HARE - H>@ - (Heb. arnebeth) occurs only in kjv@Leviticus:11:6) and kjv@Deuteronomy:14:7 Amongst the animals disallowed as food by the Mosaic law. The hare is at this day called arnel by the Arabs in Palestine and Syria. It was erroneously thought by the ancient Jews to have chewed the cud. They were no doubt misled as in the case of the shaphfan (hyrax), by the habit these animals have of moving the jaw about.

HAREM - H>@ - HOUSE

HAREPH - H>@ - (a plucking off), a name occurring in the genealogies of Judah as a son of Caleb and as "father of Bethgader." ( kjv@1Chronicles:2:51) only.

HARETH - H>@ - (thicket), The forest of, in which David took refuge, after at the instigation of the prophet Gad, he had quitted the "hold" or fastness of the cave of Adullam. ( kjv@1Samuel:22:6)

HARHAIAH - H>@ - (the Lord is angry), father of Uzziel. kjv@Nehemiah:3:8) (B.C. before 446.)

HARHUR - H>@ - (inflammation). The sons of Harhur were among the Nethinim who returned from Babylon with Zerubbabel. kjv@Ezra:2:51; kjv@Nehemiah:7:53) (B.C. 623.)

HARIM - H>@ - (flat-nosed). A priest who had charge of the third division in the house of God. ( kjv@1Chronicles:24:8) (B.C. 1014.) Bene
- Harim, probably descendants of the above, to the number of 1017, came from Babylon with Zerubbabel. kjv@Ezra:2:39; kjv@Nehemiah:7:42) (B.C. 536.) It further occurs in a list of the families of priests "who went up with Zerubbabel and Jeshua," and of those who were their descendants in the next generation. kjv@Nehemiah:12:16) Another family of Bene
- Harim, 320 in number, came from the captivity in the same caravan. kjv@Ezra:2:82; kjv@Nehemiah:7:35) (B.C. 536.) They also appear among those who had married foreign wives, kjv@Ezra:10:31) as well as those who sealed the covenant- kjv@Nehemiah:10:27) (B.C. 410.)

HARIPH - H>@ - (a plucking-off). A hundred and twelve of the Bene
- Hariph returned from the captivity with Zerubbabel. kjv@Nehemiah:7:24) The name occurs again among the "heads of the people" who sealed the covenant. ch. kjv@Nehemiah:10:19)

HARLOT - H>@ - That this class of persons existed in the earliest states of society is clear from kjv@Genesis:38:15) Rahab, kjv@Joshua:2:1) is said by the Chald. Paraphr. to have been an innkeeper; but if there were such persons, considering what we know of Canaanitish morals, kjv@Leviticus:18:27) we may conclude that they would, if women, have been of this class. The "harlots" are classed with "publicans," as those who lay under the ban of society, in the New Testament. kjv@Matthew:21:32)

HARMAGEDON - H>@ - (hill of Megiddo), kjv@Revelation:16:16) in the Revised Version for Armageddon. The change is chiefly Har , hill, in place of Ar , city.

HARNEPHER - H>@ - (panting), one of the sons of Zophah, of the tribe of Asher. ( kjv@1Chronicles:7:36)

HAROD - H>@ - (fear), The well of, a spring by which Gideon and his great army encamped on the morning of the day which ended in the rout of the Midianites. kjv@Judges:7:1) and where the trial of the people by their mode of drinking apparently took place. The Ain Jalud is very suitable to the circumstances, as being at present the largest spring in the neighborhood.

HARODITE, THE - H>@ - the designation of two of the thirty-seven warriors of David’s guard, Shammah and Elika, (2 Samuel 23:25) doubtless denied from a place named Harod.

HAROEH - H>@ - a name occurring in the genealogical lists of Judah. ( kjv@1Chronicles:2:52)

HARORITE - H>@ - (the same as Harodite) The, the title given to Shammoth, one of the warriors of David’s guard. ( kjv@1Chronicles:11:27)

HAROSHETH - H>@ - (workmanship) "of the Gentiles" so called from the mixed races that inhabited it
a city in the north of the land of Canaan, supposed to have stood on the west coast of the lake Merom from which the Jordan issues forth in one unbroken stream. It was the residence of Sisera captain of Jabin king of Canaan, kjv@Judges:4:2) and it was the point to which the victorious Israelites under Barak pursued the discomfited host and chariots of the second potentate of that name. kjv@Judges:4:16)

HARP - H>@ - The harp was the national instrument of the Hebrews, and was well known throughout Asia. Moses assigns its invention to Jubal during the antediluvian period. kjv@Genesis:4:21) Josephus records that the harp had ten strings, and that it was played on with the plectrum. Sometimes it was smaller having only eight strings, and was usually played with the fingers.

HARROW - H>@ - The word so rendered, (2 Samuel 12:31; kjv@1Chronicles:20:3) is probably a threshing-machine. The verb rendered "to harrow," kjv@Job:39:10; kjv@Isaiah:28:24; kjv@Hosea:10:11) expresses apparently the breaking of the clods, and is so far analogous to our harrowing
but whether done by any such machine as we call a "harrow" is very doubtful.

HARSHA - H>@ - (deaf). Bene
- Harsha were among the families of Nethinim who came back from Babylon with Zerubbabel. kjv@Ezra:2:52; kjv@Nehemiah:7:54)

HART - H>@ - the male stag. The word denotes some member of the deer tribe either the fallow deer or the Barbary deer. The hart is reckoned among the clean animals, (12:15; 14:5; 15:22) and seems from the passages quoted, as well as from (Kings:4:23) to have been commonly killed for food.

HARUM - H>@ - (lofty), father of Aharhel, in one of the most obscure genealogies of Judah. ( kjv@1Chronicles:4:8)

HARUMAPH - H>@ - (slit-nosed) father or ancestor of Jedaiah. kjv@Nehemiah:3:10)

HARPHITE - H>@ - (native of Hariph), The, the designation of Shephatiah, one of the Korhites who repaired to David at Ziklag. ( kjv@1Chronicles:12:5) (B.C. 1064.)

HARUZ - H>@ - (zealous), a man of Jotbah, father of Meshullemeth queen of Manasseh. ( kjv@2Kings:21:9) (B.C. before 644.)

HARVEST - H>@ - AGRICULTURE

easton:

Hara @ mountainous land, a province of Assyria ( kjv@1Chronicles:5:26), between the Tigris and the Euphrates, along the banks of the Khabur, to which some of the Israelite captives were carried. It has not been identified. Some think the word a variation of Haran.

Haradah @ fright; fear, the twenty-fifth station of the Israelites in their wanderings kjv@Numbers:33:24).

Haran @

(1.) Heb. haran; i.e., "mountaineer." The eldest son of Terah, brother of Abraham and Nahor, and father of Lot, Milcah, and Iscah. He died before his father kjv@Genesis:11:27), in Ur of the Chaldees.

(2.) Heb. haran, i.e., "parched;" or probably from the Accadian charana, meaning "a road." A celebrated city of Western Asia, now Harran, where Abram remained, after he left Ur of the Chaldees, till his father Terah died kjv@Genesis:11:31-32), when he continued his journey into the land of Canaan. It is called "Charran" in the LXX. and in kjv@Acts:7:2. It is called the "city of Nahor" kjv@Genesis:24:10), and Jacob resided here with Laban (30:43). It stood on the river Belik, an affluent of the Euphrates, about 70 miles above where it joins that river in Upper Mesopotamia or Padan-aram, and about 600 miles northwest of Ur in a direct line. It was on the caravan route between the east and west. It is afterwards mentioned among the towns taken by the king of Assyria ( kjv@2Kings:19:12; kjv@Isaiah:37:12). It was known to the Greeks and Romans under the name Carrhae.

(3.) The son of Caleb of Judah ( kjv@1Chronicles:2:46) by his concubine Ephah.

Harbona @ (a Persian word meaning "ass-driver"), one of the seven eunuchs or chamberlains of king Ahasuerus kjv@Esther:1:10 kjv@Esther:7:9).

Hare @ (Heb. 'arnebeth) was prohibited as food according to the Mosaic law kjv@Leviticus:11:6; kjv@Deuteronomy:14:7), "because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof." The habit of this animal is to grind its teeth and move its jaw as if it actually chewed the cud. But, like the cony (q.v.), it is not a ruminant with four stomachs, but a rodent like the squirrel, rat, etc. Moses speaks of it according to appearance. It is interdicted because, though apparently chewing the cud, it did not divide the hoof. There are two species in Syria,

(1) the Lepus Syriacus or Syrian hare, which is like the English hare; and

(2) the Lepus Sinaiticus, or hare of the desert. No rabbits are found in Syria.

Hareth @ thicket, a wood in the mountains of Judah where David hid when pursued by Saul ( kjv@1Samuel:22:5). It was possibly while he was here that the memorable incident narrated in kjv@2Samuel:23:14-17, kjv@1Chronicles:11:16-19 occurred. This place has not been identified, but perhaps it may be the modern Kharas, on the borders of the chain of mountains some 3 miles east of Keilah.

Harhaiah @ zeal of Jehovah, kjv@Nehemiah:3:8) "of the goldsmiths," one whose son helped to repair the wall of Jerusalem.

Harhur @ fever, one of the Nethinim kjv@Ezra:2:51).

Harim @ flat-nosed.

(1.) The head of the second course of priests ( kjv@1Chronicles:24:8).

(2.) kjv@Ezra:2:32-39; kjv@Nehemiah:7:35 kjv@Nehemiah:7:42.

(3.) kjv@Nehemiah:3:11.

(4.) 12:3.

(5.) 10:5

Hariph @ autumnal rain.

(1.) kjv@Nehemiah:7:24.

(2.) 10:19.

Harlot @

(1.) Heb. zonah kjv@Genesis:34:31 kjv@Genesis:38:15). In verses 21, 22 the Hebrew word used in kedeshah, i.e., a woman consecrated or devoted to prostitution in connection with the abominable worship of Asherah or Astarte, the Syrian Venus. This word is also used in kjv@Deuteronomy:23:17; kjv@Hosea:4:14. Thus Tamar sat by the wayside as a consecrated kedeshah. It has been attempted to show that Rahab, usually called a "harlot" kjv@Joshua:2:1 kjv@Joshua:6:17; kjv@Hebrews:11:31; kjv@James:2:25), was only an innkeeper. This interpretation, however, cannot be maintained. Jephthah's mother is called a "strange woman" kjv@Judges:11:2). This, however, merely denotes that she was of foreign extraction. In the time of Solomon harlots appeared openly in the streets, and he solemnly warns against association with them kjv@Proverbs:7:12 kjv@Proverbs:9:14.
See also kjv@Jeremiah:3:2; kjv@Ezekiel:16:24-25, 31). The Revised Version, following the LXX., has "and the harlots washed," etc., instead of the rendering of the Authorized Version, "now they washed," of kjvKings:22:38. To commit fornication is metaphorically used for to practice idolatry kjv@Jeremiah:3:1; kjv@Ezekiel:16:15; Hos. throughout); hence Jerusalem is spoken of as a harlot kjv@Isaiah:1:21).

(2.) Heb. nokriyah, the "strange woman" (kjvKings:11:1; kjv@Proverbs:5:20 kjv@Proverbs:7:5 kjv@Proverbs:23:27 ). Those so designated were Canaanites and other Gentiles kjv@Joshua:23:13). To the same class belonged the "foolish", i.e., the sinful, "woman." In the New Testament the Greek pornai, plural, "harlots," occurs in kjv@Matthew:21:31-32, where they are classed with publicans; kjv@Luke:15:30; kjv@1Corinthians:6:15-16; kjv@Hebrews:11:31; kjv@James:2:25. It is used symbolically in kjv@Revelation:17:1 kjv@Revelation:17:5, 15, 16; 19:2.

Harnepher @ a chief of the tribe of Asher ( kjv@1Chronicles:7:36).

Harness @

(1.) Heb. 'asar, "to bind;" hence the act of fastening animals to a cart ( kjv@1Samuel:6:7 kjv@1Samuel:6:10 kjv@Jeremiah:46:4, etc.).

(2.) An Old English word for "armour;" Heb. neshek ( kjv@2Chronicals:9:24).

(3.) Heb. shiryan, a coat of mail (kjvKings:22:34; kjv@2Chronicals:18:33; rendered "breastplate" in kjv@Isaiah:59:17).

(4.) The children of Israel passed out of Egypt "harnessed" kjv@Exodus:13:18), i.e., in an orderly manner, and as if to meet a foe. The word so rendered is probably a derivative from Hebrew hamesh (i.e., "five"), and may denote that they went up in five divisions, viz., the van, centre, two wings, and rear-guard.

Harod @ palpitation, a fountain near which Gideon and his army encamped on the morning of the day when they encountered and routed the Midianites Judges:7). It was south of the hill Moreh. The present 'Ain Jalud ("Goliath's Fountain"), south of Jezreel and nearly opposite Shunem, is probably the fountain here referred to (7:4-5).

Harodite @ an epithet applied to two of David's heroes ( kjv@2Samuel:23:25). (Comp. kjv@1Chronicles:11:27.)

Harosheth of the Gentiles @ kjv@Judges:4:2) or nations, a city near Hazor in Galilee of the Gentiles, or Upper Galilee, in the north of Palestine. It was here that Jabin's great army was marshalled before it went forth into the great battlefield of Esdraelon to encounter the army of Israel, by which it was routed and put to flight Judges:4). It was situated "at the entrance of the pass to Esdraelon from the plain of Acre" at the base of Carmel. The name in the Hebrew is _Harosheth ha Gojim_, i.e., "the smithy of the nations;" probably, as is supposed, so called because here Jabin's iron war-chariots, armed with scythes, were made. It is identified with el
- Harithiyeh.

Harp @ (Heb. kinnor), the national instrument of the Hebrews. It was invented by Jubal kjv@Genesis:4:21). Some think the word kinnor denotes the whole class of stringed instruments. It was used as an accompaniment to songs of cheerfulness as well as of praise to God kjv@Genesis:31:27; kjv@1Samuel:16:23; kjv@2Chronicals:20:28; kjv@Psalms:33:2 kjv@Psalms:137:2). In Solomon's time harps were made of almug-trees (kjvKings:10:11-12). In kjv@1Chronicles:15:21 mention is made of "harps on the Sheminith;" Revised Version, "harps set to the Sheminith;" better perhaps "harps of eight strings." The soothing effect of the music of the harp is referred to kjv@1Samuel:16:16 kjv@1Samuel:16:23 kjv@1Samuel:18:10 kjv@1Samuel:19:9 . The church in heaven is represented as celebrating the triumphs of the Redeemer "harping with their harps" kjv@Revelation:14:2).

Harrow @ (Heb. harits), a tribulum or sharp threshing sledge; a frame armed on the under side with rollers or sharp spikes ( kjv@2Samuel:12:31; kjv@1Chronicles:20:3). Heb. verb sadad, to harrow a field, break its clods kjv@Job:39:10; kjv@Isaiah:28:4; kjv@Hosea:10:11). Its form is unknown. It may have resembled the instrument still in use in Egypt.

Harsha @ worker or enchanter, one of the Nethinim kjv@Ezra:2:52; kjv@Nehemiah:7:54).

Hart @ (Heb. 'ayal), a stag or male deer. It is ranked among the clean animals kjv@Deuteronomy:12:15 kjv@Deuteronomy:14:5 kjv@Deuteronomy:15:22 ), and was commonly killed for food (kjvKings:4:23). The hart is frequently alluded to in the poetical and prophetical books kjv@Isaiah:35:6; Cant. kjv@2:8-9; Lamentations:1:6; kjv@Psalms:42:1).

Harum @ elevated, ( kjv@1Chronicles:4:8), a descendant of Judah.

Haruphite @ a native of Hariph; an epithet given to Shephatiah, one of those who joined David at Ziklag ( kjv@1Chronicles:12:5).

Haruz @ eager, the father of Meshullemeth, the wife of king Manasseh ( kjv@2Kings:21:19) and mother of king Amon.

Harvest @ the season for gathering grain or fruit. On the 16th day of Abib (or April) a handful of ripe ears of corn was offered as a first-fruit before the Lord, and immediately after this the harvest commenced kjv@Leviticus:23:9-14; kjv@2Samuel:21:9-10; kjv@Ruth:2:23). It began with the feast of Passover and ended with Pentecost, thus lasting for seven weeks kjv@Exodus:23:16). The harvest was a season of joy kjv@Psalms:126:1-6; kjv@Isaiah:9:3). This word is used figuratively kjv@Matthew:9:37 kjv@Matthew:13:30; kjv@Luke:10:2; kjv@John:4:35. (
