Messianic Prophecy - Old Testament

(referenced by several New Testament sources)

The Messiah will be the offspring (descendant) of the woman (Eve):

nkjv@Genesis:3:15 @ And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel."

The Messiah will be a descendant of Abraham, through whom everyone on earth will be blessed:

nkjv@Genesis:12:3 @ I will bless those who bless you, And I will curse him who curses you; And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed."

nkjv@Genesis:18:18 @ since Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him?

The Messiah will be a descendant of Judah:

nkjv@Genesis:49:10 @ The scepter shall not depart from Judah, Nor a lawgiver from between his feet, Until Shiloh comes; And to Him shall be the obedience of the people.

The Messiah will be a prophet like Moses:

nkjv@Deuteronomy:18:15-16 @ "The LORD your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from your midst, from your brethren. Him you shall hear, according to all you desired of the LORD your God in Horeb in the day of the assembly, saying, "Let me not hear again the voice of the LORD my God, nor let me see this great fire anymore, lest I die.'

nkjv@Deuteronomy:18:18-19 @ I will raise up for them a Prophet like you from among their brethren, and will put My words in His mouth, and He shall speak to them all that I command Him. And it shall be that whoever will not hear My words, which He speaks in My name, I will require it of him.

The Messiah will be the Son of God:

The Messiah will be raised from the dead (resurrected):

The Messiah will be sneered at and mocked:

The Messiah will be pierced through hands and feet:

The Messiah’s bones will not be broken:

Men Will Gamble for the Messiah’s clothing:

The Messiah will be hated without a cause:

The Messiah will be betrayed by a friend:

The Messiah will ascend to heaven (at the right hand of God):

nkjv@Psalms:68:18 @ You have ascended on high, You have led captivity captive; You have received gifts among men, Even from the rebellious, That the LORD God might dwell there.

The Messiah will be given vinegar and gall to drink:

nkjv@Psalms:69:21 @ They also gave me gall for my food, And for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.

Great kings will pay homage and tribute to the Messiah:

nkjv@Psalms:72:10-11 @ The kings of Tarshish and of the isles Will bring presents; The kings of Sheba and Seba Will offer gifts. Yes, all kings shall fall down before Him; All nations shall serve Him.

The Messiah is a “stone the builders rejected” who will become the “head cornerstone”:

nkjv@Psalms:118:22-23 @ The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone. This was the LORD's doing; It is marvelous in our eyes.

nkjv@Isaiah:28:16 @ Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: "Behold, I lay in Zion a stone for a foundation, A tried stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation; Whoever believes will not act hastily.

The Messiah will be a descendant of David:

The Messiah will be a born of a virgin:

The Messiah’s first spiritual work will be in Galilee:

nkjv@Isaiah:9:1-2 @ .....The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, And afterward more heavily oppressed her, By the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, In Galilee of the Gentiles. The people who walked in darkness Have seen a great light; Those who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, Upon them a light has shined.

Named Wonderful Counselor:

nkjv@Isaiah:9:6 @ For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

There will be no end to his government and peace:

nkjv@Isaiah:9:7 @ Of the increase of His government and peace There will be no end, Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, To order it and establish it with judgment and justice From that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.

The Messiah will make the blind see, the deaf hear, etc. :

nkjv@Isaiah:35:5-6 @ Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, And the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped. Then the lame shall leap like a deer, And the tongue of the dumb sing. For waters shall burst forth in the wilderness, And streams in the desert.

The Messiah will be beaten, mocked, and spat upon:

nkjv@Isaiah:50:6 @ I gave My back to those who struck Me, And My cheeks to those who plucked out the beard; I did not hide My face from shame and spitting.

People will hear and not believe the “arm of the LORD” (Messiah):

The Messiah will be rejected:

nkjv@Isaiah:53:3 @ He is despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.

The Messiah will be killed:

nkjv@Isaiah:53:8 @ He was taken from prison and from judgment, And who will declare His generation? For He was cut off from the land of the living; For the transgressions of My people He was stricken.

The Messiah will be silent in front of his accusers:

nkjv@Isaiah:53:7 @ He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, And as a sheep before its shearers is silent, So He opened not His mouth.

The Messiah will be buried with the rich:

nkjv@Isaiah:53:9 @ And they made His grave with the wicked-- But with the rich at His death, Because He had done no violence, Nor was any deceit in His mouth.

The Messiah will be crucified with criminals:

nkjv@Isaiah:53:12 @ Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the great, And He shall divide the spoil with the strong, Because He poured out His soul unto death, And He was numbered with the transgressors, And He bore the sin of many, And made intercession for the transgressors.

The Messiah is part of the new and everlasting covenant:

nkjv@Isaiah:55:3-4 @ Incline your ear, and come to Me. Hear, and your soul shall live; And I will make an everlasting covenant with you-- The sure mercies of David. Indeed I have given him as a witness to the people, A leader and commander for the people.

The Messiah will be our intercessor:

nkjv@Isaiah:59:16 @ He saw that there was no man, And wondered that there was no intercessor; Therefore His own arm brought salvation for Him; And His own righteousness, it sustained Him.

The Messiah will have unparalleled anointing:

nkjv@Isaiah:61:1-2 @ "The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon Me, Because the LORD has anointed Me To preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives, And the opening of the prison to those who are bound; To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, And the day of vengeance of our God; To comfort all who mourn,

The Messiah will come at a specific time:

nkjv@Daniel:9:25 @ "Know therefore and understand, That from the going forth of the command To restore and build Jerusalem Until Messiah the Prince, There shall be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; The street shall be built again, and the wall, Even in troublesome times.

nkjv@Daniel:9:26 @ "And after the sixty-two weeks Messiah shall be cut off, but not for Himself; And the people of the prince who is to come Shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end of it shall be with a flood, And till the end of the war desolations are determined.

The Messiah will be born in Bethlehem:

The Messiah will enter Jerusalem riding a donkey:

nkjv@Zechariah:9:9 @ "Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation, Lowly and riding on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey.

The Messiah will be sold for 30 pieces of silver:

nkjv@Zechariah:11:12-13 @ Then I said to them, "If it is agreeable to you, give me my wages; and if not, refrain." So they weighed out for my wages thirty pieces of silver. And the LORD said to me, "Throw it to the potter"--that princely price they set on me. So I took the thirty pieces of silver and threw them into the house of the LORD for the potter.

The Messiah will forsaken by His disciples:

nkjv@Zechariah:13:7 @ "Awake, O sword, against My Shepherd, Against the Man who is My Companion," Says the LORD of hosts. "Strike the Shepherd, And the sheep will be scattered; Then I will turn My hand against the little ones.

The Messiah will enter the Temple with authority:

nkjv@Malachi:3:1 @ "Behold, I send My messenger, And he will prepare the way before Me. And the Lord, whom you seek, Will suddenly come to His temple, Even the Messenger of the covenant, In whom you delight. Behold, He is coming," Says the LORD of hosts.
