Notes:

The lawyer is caught in the trap of thinking that something that he does can get him into the eternal life. Other than faith in Jesus Christ the only alternative is to perfectly keep the Law of Moses without fault. The lawyer has devoted his life (or so he thinks) to knowing the law enough to do this; except it can't be done. Even at it's most basic level there are many hairs to be split over the law and depending on how those hairs are split, say the meaning of neighbor, entirely different courses of action can be taken. This is not to eliminate good works, it is to place them into a better context. Faith in Jesus must come first; it is our salvation and redemption, transformation and setting apart from the dead works of the flesh. Faith produces the type of works that the law itself cannot, works that are the effect of having been saved/redeemed/transformed/sanctified in/by/through Christ that lead others to have the same faith and therefore similar good works (or better called good fruit - His fruit).

Other religions suffer the same weakness as well. Legalism with all it's stress on obtaining perfection does not make an adherent perfect, rather it makes one aware of imperfections; other's, their own unless utterly blind to the obvious. Better to think of the law as the bill owed that no man can pay. We can split hairs over it. We can kick in whatever we can afford. But it is the $3000 meal that at best we have only one nickle saved to pay on it (what we have doesn't even pay the tip). And too often, depending on how the hairs are split, legalism doesn't even draw us the direction that the "Law Giver" sees fit. It can illegally exalt us into positions far above those who are better doing the work meant by the law.

The argument counter to the "law of grace" is that it is "rich daddy" spoiling his young rebel "do nothing brat" with the high performance spiritual racing car. The analogy breaks down as it is "obedient unto death" "son of God" Jesus that is doing the receiving here and it is "brethren presenting themselves a daily living sacrifice" transformed holy and acceptable by Him "zealous for good works" partaking of His receiving "adopted child" being falsely critiqued.
