Notes:
A man at the table Jesus was at heard these things and responded. What things did he hear? The resurrection of the just no doubt because of his reference to the kingdom of God. And you know it would be a blessed thing to eat bread in the kingdom, but this man at present is unlikely to accept God's righteous invitation because it involves belief in the the Son of God sitting there at the table with him and His redemptive work upon the cross and resurrection. Few in the rooms this evening are going to allow themselves that, they will have find some excuse.
The statement to Jesus almost seems to say that "we will all be there, you should come along with us" else it is a passive reply "sit down now you are making everyone uncomfortable, we all are seeking the same thing". Are they? Are they really? Resurrection? Through the resurrected justifier of the just? Judgment? Based upon faith in the person of Jesus Christ not club membership in a particular separatist interpretation of the law? Kingdom? Kingdom established by the hand of God or rather by the consensus and determination of an elitist religious sect?
The same can be said today "We all are seeking the same thing". It is accused of being narrow minded when it is suggested that only one way can be right. Resurrection and judgment must go hand in hand else there is no suitable reason for resurrection. It is not for condemnation's sake judgment is made, not when justification by grace is plainly offered and graciously provided for, it is for righteousness sake. Likewise, this righteousness and our faith must go hand in hand otherwise belief continues freelance and without substantive transformation. It is not narrow then to conclude that we are not all seeking the same thing, we are all seeking a means of avoiding God's singular invitation. It is rather short sighted for any one to want all of this eternal business while overlooking the all sufficient means necessary to receive it.
Herein lay the greatest expression of love thy neighbor as yourself that one would reach out to another towards their salvation from the opposite form of resurrection and judgment providing ample explanation and invitation into the better intended.
Also, it is suggested by several commentators that the Pharisee of that day did not believe that the maimed/halt/blind would be allowed heaven. It would be as an insult to their beliefs to suggest such a biding.
