What is God's righteousness observed doing?:
- Being responsive to the cry of the beggar while on His way to be given over even though the crowd following was not.
- Calling the beggar through others over to Him. Having him verbally state what it is he wants.
What does this tell us about God's righteousness?:
- Did Jesus ever not heal anyone that He came upon along the way? Yes He did. Those of His own town and region that reduced Him down to the son of a deceased carpenter, those that wouldn't come to Him or bring their sick to Him for blind familiarity. Did He ever not heal someone who called to Him? We are not told of any and surely there were many who did call for Him. Was there any that could have used His help that just sat to the side and let Him walk by? Probably many, but then again there were the many disciples who typically would go out to them and bring them in to Jesus.
- The participation of those who at first refused the man is used as a device by Jesus for reinforcing the greater message. The confession of his desire for sight and acknowledgement to all of his faith the sealing cap. This was for the crowd's benefit for both Jesus and Bartimaeus fully knew what was being believed for. The device along with the previous context is teaching not overlook evidences of another's faith, not to offend the little one no matter how big/old they are, to serve all, to not refuse.
How is man reacting?:
- The faith of the man identifies to the significance/possibility of Jesus of Nazareth with the prophetic label Son of David, the need for His mercy, the ability to restore sight. It also is defined as being strong enough to work passed the objections of others. Faith got him the Lord's immediate attention, the Father's confirmation of Jesus in this got him the rest of the way to where he could see.
- Casting away his garment upon rising tells me that he was ready to get to it. Whatever he was going to need to do he was going to go about it unencumbered. It is like for us to roll up our sleeves.
Notes:
kjv@Matthew:20:30 reports two blind men at the scene. Mark is the only to identify him by name suggesting that he may have been familiar enough to others to warrant identifying, or may have played some additional significance not recorded.
The man heard it was Jesus of Nazareth, someone had to of told Him. The man had heard what Jesus of Nazareth could do, he had to have been told at some point of accounts by somebody(s) or been present at other healings. The point is other people are telling him and this time it is not the disciples. We have been through a long chapter focused on Jesus correcting his disciple's motives and intents and refusal/offence, here they are continuing down that hardened path. God will make Himself known one way or the other, it is our decision knowing all that He has revealed to us to better inform others. Is is our calling and our opportunity.
Jesus may have known how much time He had to get to Jerusalem. It would be as simple as knowing how many days until the Passover and arriving one week ahead of that. This week plus the journey there would be Jesus' most prolific as far as recorded teaching and prophecy. Other gospel accounts also suggest the very large number of people following Him up to the hilled city for this Passover.
Key Messages:
What does this say about our present condition?
- We can expect much of what we do for the Lord to be corrections, second/third+ chances at doing right. The experience, though humbling, is meant to make us all the better should the lesson once and for all be learned. Often we go back to make the same or additional mistakes and again we are corrected. The intention is just the same.
- I do not think that this is the many disciples intending to do wrong, they are wanting to do right just as are we ourselves, they are believing themselves to be doing right by this. No matter how hard you try to do right until these things are done out of His power and resource abiding in His Holy Spirit they cannot be properly fruitful nor totally right. At times we can be walking in His Spirit in all these areas but one, and it is that one thing that will stop us along that road once again to be corrected. Correction then is a way of life.
- The dynamics of being in a group with determined objective often dampens the impulse or awareness of issues and opportunities sitting and even calling out along the side of the way. What you might have had impulse to do in a normal setting is blinded dim by the tunnel vision of a team focused on moving forward towards objective. The greater objective can easily be lost or passed by even if the stated objective is being obtained.
