Today's Verse:
kjv@Matthew:16:1-4
kjv@Matthew:16:1 @ The Pharisees also with the Sadducees came, and tempting desired him that he would shew them a sign from heaven.
kjv@Matthew:16:2 @ He answered and said unto them, When it is evening, ye say, It will be fair weather: for the sky is red.
kjv@Matthew:16:3 @ And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowring. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times?
kjv@Matthew:16:4 @ A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas. And he left them, and departed.
Today's notes:Discerning the Face of the Sky
Context:
- Before - Feeding of 4000+
- After - Beware the yeast of the Pharisees
What is man believing/doing?:
- attempting to entice Jesus into giving them an irrefutable sign of His Messianic claims
- discerning the face of the sky, but not the signs of the time
What is making man to believe/do as he is doing?:
- Because they have rejected all of His wonders so far and are seeking to disprove Him. They themselves do not believe in prophecy and it's references to a eternal deliverer.
- a wickedness of this generation that exalts itself above the word/movement of God, and a spiritual adultery with the political powers and status quo
Notes:
Jonah
This demand comes after three intense days of healing thousands, capped off by a miraculous fresh fish fest in the middle of the wilderness.
Key Messages:
What does this say about our present condition?
- A great many to this day eliminate heaven/hell and judgment from their considerations. They may allow themselves a fundamental acceptance in written law and morality, a savior though of the scope of Jesus is highly unneeded. Yet the climate that day above their spiritual forefathers the Sadducee was just as Jesus had described it (just as they themselves knew it to be) and events did transpire by willing hands just as He had predicted and He was raised just as the prophet (they didn't believe in) foretold; like in Nineveh many because of this sign have repented. Whether one chooses to believe it now our not, what Jesus said was going to happen did happen and that should be taken as fulfilling the one overwhelming sign He said that He was going to give them. They have unwillingly become participants in the fulfillment of this sign at their own expense.
