( FaithOfJesus thread begun by rRandyP )

Today's Verse:

kjv@Luke:8:26-39

kjv@Luke:8:26 @ And they arrived at the country of the Gadarenes, which is over against Galilee.

kjv@Luke:8:27 @ And when he went forth to land, there met him out of the city a certain man, which had devils long time, and ware no clothes, neither abode in any house, but in the tombs.

kjv@Luke:8:28 @ When he saw Jesus, he cried out, and fell down before him, and with a loud voice said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God most high? I beseech thee, torment me not.

kjv@Luke:8:29 @ (For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For oftentimes it had caught him: and he was kept bound with chains and in fetters; and he brake the bands, and was driven of the devil into the wilderness.)

kjv@Luke:8:30 @ And Jesus asked him, saying, What is thy name? And he said, Legion: because many devils were entered into him.

kjv@Luke:8:31 @ And they besought him that he would not command them to go out into the deep.

kjv@Luke:8:32 @ And there was there an herd of many swine feeding on the mountain: and they besought him that he would suffer them to enter into them. And he suffered them.

kjv@Luke:8:33 @ Then went the devils out of the man, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the lake, and were choked.

kjv@Luke:8:34 @ When they that fed them saw what was done, they fled, and went and told it in the city and in the country.

kjv@Luke:8:35 @ Then they went out to see what was done; and came to Jesus, and found the man, out of whom the devils were departed, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid.

kjv@Luke:8:36 @ They also which saw it told them by what means he that was possessed of the devils was healed.

kjv@Luke:8:37 @ Then the whole multitude of the country of the Gadarenes round about besought him to depart from them; for they were taken with great fear: and he went up into the ship, and returned back again.

kjv@Luke:8:38 @ Now the man out of whom the devils were departed besought him that he might be with him: but Jesus sent him away, saying,

kjv@Luke:8:39 @ Return to thine own house, and shew how great things God hath done unto thee. And he went his way, and published throughout the whole city how great things Jesus had done unto him.

Notes:

Two men? One man? One man of greater importance to the story likely because of the effect of his testimony in the ten city region of Decapolis Syria. Jesus later visited this area with great success kjv@Mark:7:31.

Uncertainties - Demons? Not fallen angels kjv@2Peter:2:4 kjv@Jude:1:6? Pre-flood Nephilim H5303 kjv@Genesis:6:4 (with kjv@Job:1:6)? A small portion of fallen angels? A small portion of Nephilim (non-canonized source Book of Enoch - Jubilees)? (allusions to in the deuterocanonical books of Judith, Sirach 16:7, Baruch 3:26–28, and Wisdom of Solomon 14:6, and in the non-deuterocanonical 3 Maccabees 2:4)? Note that the demons are under the impression that they will not be fully dealt with till a future time.

Certainties - existence acknowledged by other Jews dict:easton Exorcist , demons possess and torment, demons acknowledge both Jesus and a final torment, demons are subject to Jesus and name of Jesus kjv@Luke:10:17 as reported by many and feared, people close to this event responded to what had been done with great fear.

It is often too easy to focus in on ourselves and the things of man and not realize that there is a great deal going on around us in a spiritual sense. Call it a full fledged warfare. We know little about it, but we see the signs of it. That is not to say that all things are directly caused by it as some seem to claim; we surely add much of our own into the mix. In terms of God's judgment however, it is just as much about destroying the works of the Devil as it is about the rebellious and wounded conditions we have entrenched ourselves into.

I find the reaction of great fear most revealing. Was it fear of the devils coming back? Fear of the economic cost to the community? Fear of Jesus expecting something from them? Fear of what would be found out about them and their treatment previous of the matter? Fear of the warfare He had opened their eyes to? There is also a fear of subjection to one thing or the other. Likely all of the above!

Key Messages:

Declaring Certainty

kjv@1John:3:8 @ He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

kjv@1Peter:3:22 @ Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him.

kjv@Revelation:20:10 @ And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

kjv@Hebrews:2:8 @ Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that he put all in subjection under him, he left nothing that is not put under him. But now we see not yet all things put under him.

kjv@1Corinthians:15:28 @ And when all things shall be subdued unto him, then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him that put all things under him, that God may be all in all.

kjv@Luke:10:20 @ Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.
