Notes:

The sections of this passage (three by my count) cannot be contextually detached from the others and still have it hold the same meaning. The majority context involved is the intercessory petition of bread for another without that has traveled a long journey. The one petitioning has not the bread himself; none/nothing. Section one puts it as daily bread, that which is most needed one day at a time. Included along with it is the mutual forgiveness of sin, leading from temptation and deliverance from evil. Section three has it as the perfect gift the Holy Spirit being received. Section two has the late importune persistence of the petitioner facilitating the transaction. What better could anyone ask for a friend that he would be sure to receive? The long traveled friend comes to him in urgent need of the Spirit, he goes to the nearby Friend and with persistence asks/seeks/knocks.

The Holy Spirit comes from no other but Jesus Christ the Bread of Life, the bread of His body willingly broken for you. When you pray, pray as one friend for another like this: As a child of the Most High God who wills that no man should perish but that all would come to eternal life and therefore gave HIS only begotten as like living manna from heaven for the forgiveness of sins and the payment of mortal debt, to impart HIS Holy Spirit to lead and deliver us as only could be done by Him. Our new found position and acquaintance with the Most High is to be used for the benefit of those yet without, they being in daily need of the same all important perfect thing that we are having found to be uncompromisingly given/received in Christ. I bet John didn't quite teach it like that, eh?

The hour of this intercession becomes then the key indicator as it is late beyond hospitable expectation. Jesus had predictably been rejected by all when the day was once lit and must be soon received before the spiritual day is lit a second time forever more. Perhaps it is because the neighbor himself had received his bread at a similar midnight hour that he knows to persist at knocking for his long distant friend. The picture of urgency is most pressing. Roberts has it as the bread required for the coming day. The disciples will soon know to pray and act with this urgency for the friends that will come to them, and pray as well for the means perhaps to meet their friends along the road halfway.

Why doesn't the traveler go to "HE from within" for bread directly? Could it be because he has yet to receive the forgiveness of sin and deliverance from evil to be prayed for and found in the bread of life Christ? Why is the traveler not encouraged rather to go himself? Could it be that for fear that he himself is a stranger? That he would likely not go otherwise? Could it be that for the disciple (one who is not a stranger) it is the spiritually civil hospitable expectation from Christ? that the temptation to not intercede in such case would appear itself to be evil?
