Notes:

Luke uses a six fold reference to establish the time of this well known national event: dict:easton Tiberius Caesar dict:easton Pilate, Pontius dict:easton Antipas dict:easton Herod Philip II dict:easton Lysanias dict:easton Annas dict:easton Caiaphas . Annas and and Caiphas are grouped as one reference because of the historical precedence being set and the perception of the public. These references not only pinpoint the time, but also the atmosphere and are valid historical markers even today.

Notice that being bold even brash does not deter the public perception of the prophet when anointed by the Holy Ghost. People of course are uneasy, yet it adds to the contemplation of Christ like actions and expectations.

Luke has John calling all men as vipers where Matthew has it as directed to scribes and Pharisees. Both can be true. It could be that the scribes took particular offense to the label. It could be that a viper includes any that would follow the teachings of scribes which would include most all. Note again that it does not drive the majority away, it leads them at least to a symbolic baptism for some in preparation for receiving a future baptism by the Holy Ghost.
