Today's Verse:

kjv@Luke:4:31-37

kjv@Luke:4:31 @ And came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the sabbath days.

kjv@Luke:4:32 @ And they were astonished at his doctrine: for his word was with power.

kjv@Luke:4:33 @ And in the synagogue there was a man, which had a spirit of an unclean devil, and cried out with a loud voice,

kjv@Luke:4:34 @ Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art; the Holy One of God.

kjv@Luke:4:35 @ And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him, and hurt him not.

kjv@Luke:4:36 @ And they were all amazed, and spake among themselves, saying, What a word is this! for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out.

kjv@Luke:4:37 @ And the fame of him went out into every place of the country round about.

Notes:

kjv@1Thessalonians:1:5 Gospel came not in word only but in power, kjv@1Corinthians:2:5 that faith is not in wisdom of men but power of God. kjv@John:6:63 The Words are spirit and life, kjv@Jeremiah:23:29 The word of the Lord is like fire, kjv@1Corinthians:14:25 secrets of heart revealed, kjv@2Corinthians:10:5 casting down immaginations and every high thing.

The worship of demons can be observed in a great many cultures throughout history. Idols and statues and petroglyphs line the archaeological record continuing even into our day. They are used by used as symbols of power (our demon is stronger than yours so don't mess with us) and are as gods to the people of these areas/times. That they enter men and women freely sometimes with horrific effect, the fear of such holding power over entire communities is observable as well. What they are scripturally and why they are allowed to remain is a frequent topic of debate, but Jesus' power over and that their time will suddenly end is not.

Luke again collects pieces of evidence that could not be refuted by the reading audience of that day. Fame did go out that this historical Jesus of Nazareth did exhibit effective power over demons, it was one of many things that He was known for throughout Judea and elsewhere, it was a draw for people plagued by the demonic to go see Him. It was even accused of Him of being in kahoots with. To say that He wasn't known by people for this would have be counter productive to one's critique in that day.
