Notes:

We get the impression that Jesus was active and drew a pressing crowd before even calling the Disciples in to service. Luke also has Jesus in Peter's house ahead of this calling. The teaching and miraculous works of Jesus are to take precedence over anything gained by the addition of twelve Disciples.

If left to Luke's account we would conclude that this was the first calling by Jesus with His first Disciples. Other accounts record a previous event where brother Andrew introduces Jesus to Peter; Andrew and another disciple (likely partner John) having been familiar with Jesus from time spent following the Baptist. There is also record of Jesus watching Peter from the shore alone before having conversation in the boat and also the four making immediate decision. Harmony suggests that there was more than one meeting climaxing in one eventual immediate decision.

A professional fisherman coming back after a long night without a catch is a fisherman that has tried everything that he knows, has used all of his skill and cunning to exhaustion and probably doesn't need a preacher from inland Nazareth telling him to go back out. Luke is likely relaying friend Peter's account of this event; to hear Peter's account from Peter's own lips would be delightful to say the least. The key phrase of course is "nevertheless at thy word"; a phrase we would do well to adopt for our own discipleship. Then like Luke watching Peter's eyes light up at the overwhelming catch brought in by the Lord other's could watch our eye's as we recount His work in our nets as well!
