( FaithOfJesus thread begun by rRandyP )

Today's Verse:

kjv@Luke:9:1-9

kjv@Luke:9:1 @ Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases.

kjv@Luke:9:2 @ And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick.

kjv@Luke:9:3 @ And he said unto them, Take nothing for your journey, neither staves, nor scrip, neither bread, neither money; neither have two coats apiece.

kjv@Luke:9:4 @ And whatsoever house ye enter into, there abide, and thence depart.

kjv@Luke:9:5 @ And whosoever will not receive you, when ye go out of that city, shake off the very dust from your feet for a testimony against them.

kjv@Luke:9:6 @ And they departed, and went through the towns, preaching the gospel, and healing every where.

kjv@Luke:9:7 @ Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done by him: and he was perplexed, because that it was said of some, that John was risen from the dead;

kjv@Luke:9:8 @ And of some, that Elias had appeared; and of others, that one of the old prophets was risen again.

kjv@Luke:9:9 @ And Herod said, John have I beheaded: but who is this, of whom I hear such things? And he desired to see him.

Notes:

If there was ever a thought that what made an effective disciple was the caliber of disciple, here it is stated rather the caliber of the authority from the master. The disciples were sent out to do that which they themselves could not do; much like empty vessels carrying full what the Lord God only could do and to say what the Lord God only could say. Between what was said and what was done it was to be made known that only the Lord God could have performed this. They, His disciples, would be known region wide as followers of a living Master who could do such things long before they would be known as those entrusted to carry on their risen Master's works. It was the combination of word and wonders delivered in quite plain human vessels that gave many the sense of certainty that this was from the Lord. Just as it was the obedient emptying of themselves observing the performance of the Lord ahead of them in securing all the necessary details that gave themselves the certainty of their Master's message and authority.

Notice though that this empowered time was but brief, later to be given to another seventy without them; that they themselves at this time could not pass it forward to yet another. Not until after the Resurrection and Indwelling of the Holy Spirit would this endowment pick up again, this time to be constant and apostolic.

I am honestly searching for a recorded instance where a non-apostle healed or cast out in this manner. Simon saw the laying on of hands as key to the receiving of the Spirit kjv@Acts:8 but it was Phillip that all healing came through. kjv@Mark:16:17-18 sign of those that shall follow (certain of the Apostles, what of others if not recorded?). kjv@1Corinthians:12 some having gifts of healing G2386 (healing in same miraculous sense?). kjv@James:5:14-15 anointing and prayer of faith from elders (why elders if in all or some? why anointing oil and prayer if by hands or belief). kjv@1Corinthians:12:31 covet earnestly best gifts but excellent way (body of diversities as one body). Counter that people were being brought to Apostles to be healed (why not to Timothy or Cleo?) (why if common among believers or can be simply believed in?). With the casting of devils I only see kjv@Mark:9:38-41 countered by kjv@Acts:19:13-16.

Key Messages:

Declaring Certainty

kjv@1Thessalonians:1:5 @ For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much assurance; as ye know what manner of men we were among you for your sake.

kjv@Acts:9:34 @ And Peter said unto him, Aeneas, Jesus Christ maketh thee whole: arise, and make thy bed. And he arose immediately.

kjv@Acts:4:14 @ And beholding the man which was healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it.

kjv@Romans:1:16 @ For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

kjv@Romans:1:17 @ For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.

kjv@Romans:1:18 @ For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;
