What is God's righteousness observed doing?:
What does this tell us about God's righteousness?:
- Throughout the ministry every opportunity has been taken to squelch the public messianic announcement. Messiah in the divine sense means something totally different than the way the public is going to take it to mean. Allowing this proclamation signals the end as the powers are going to see it as an immediate threat, the religious are going to see it as blasphemy, and the citizens are going to see it as liberation and political revolution. Most everything that Jesus has masterfully explained about His messianic mission will be forgotten and the bothersome replacement image imagined rejected. Till now this had been kept quite allowing for His wondrous works to speak for themselves.
- The compound prophecies in their original contexts to me are rather vague and kjv@Zechariah:9:9 tucked under other context more immediate to that time meaning. Had it not been fulfilled in this manner no one would have been any wiser to critique it. Being that Matthew mentioned it however indicates that God was keeping track of it and was not shy about the sudden critique the mention would foster. The critique does not mask the fact though that this event was monumental to the course that now would follow and if truly prophecy render a much more profound context to the lesser immediate context that they themselves were generated in.
How is man reacting?:
- Crowd receiving Jesus triumphantly into the city as Messiah (for assorted purposes).
- Reciting from the great hallel kjv@Psalms:118:25. The saying was a customary acclamation at the feast of Tabernacles as were the cut palm branches kjv@Leviticus:23:40. The feast was 8 days (2 convocations) starting the fifteenth of the seventh month Ethanim (October) commemorating the sojourn of Israel in the desert. Also date commemorating dedication of Solomon's temple. Passover though is in Abib/Nisan the first Jewish month (April) same as the deliverance of Israel from Egypt dict:naves Month . The connection of the two opposing dates is likely the similarity of the anticipated sense of deliverance.
Notes:
Olives/Olivet: Eastern mount of the city with four summits. One, mount of Acension where Jesus later ascended into heaven kjv@Acts:1:12 .
One, the mount of Prophets contains the single catacomb Tomb of prophets. One, the mount of Offence where Solomon erected idolatrous high places for his wives kjv@2Kings:23:13. One Viri Galilaei, the lesser of the four. In all Olivet stands merely 300 ft above the temple mount. At the base is Gethsemane.
Never overlook seeming small details like a unbroken colt never ridden by man. The symbolism often has more direction towards understanding than the simple detail itself. What does the picture symbolize to you? What would the picture symbolize to observer of that time? What depth does it add to the ride of Jesus into the city atop garments? the gait of the colt walking on top of a continuing cycle of strewn branches and other garments itself? In addition rwp@Luke:19:30 notes Plummer connecting virgin birth, virgin colt, virgin tomb.
Going back to my notes of this event as described by Matthew Matthew:21:1-11 reminded me of the sense then that this may have been driven more by the public's desire to receive Jesus ceremoniously than Jesus or the Spirit desiring to make proclamation. It does seem out of character for Jesus. I did not immediately have that sense this time until I looked back. My first sense was that He was purposely lighting the fuse for the explosive end knowing how everyone would react to the claim rightfully His to make. Now that both are considered there comes a third sense synthesized that both the public and Jesus desired to do this each in their own sense for mostly opposing reasons and anticipated outcomes; caught in the middle was the fearful/disrupted majority who just wanted the whole thing to disappear.
The people are highly anticipating deliverance by this man; deliverance as they see it. They are gathered in advance of the Passover observance combining in Feast of Tabernacle symbology to what it already means doubling the significance that they expect. They have come to this expectation largely on their own without much prompting from Jesus. They believe that they are triumphantly receiving the Deliverer when in fact they are unknowingly handing over the Passover Lamb to the alter of the chief priests so that the blood of slain Lamb can save the covered believer from the Destroyer. This is God's doing, no man has known enough to direct this to happen by their own. It is certainly deliverance, but a step towards it not as any would expect. Jesus is riding upon their expectation knowing that their misplaced expectation will soon turn to their utter rejection of Him.

What does this say about our present condition?
- We do want to see Jesus succeed. We think that we have it all measured up how He is going to do that. If anyone could do what we expect needs to be done for deliverance it would be Him. The problem is what we expect falls so short of what God rightly knows that needs to be done. Our expectation? It is not so much a deliverance as it is a concession we want HIM to make allowing us to remain as we are, just in a better unbound position.
- It is our belief that we ourselves are essentially okay, it is the situations and powers that be that cause all of this evil upon us. If Jesus could just deliver us from that we would be just fine on our own. So this is what we need Him to be for us. What we fail to see is that all of this exterior stuff mentioned is superficial and doesn't get to the root of the problem within each of us that has brought all of this evil and bondage upon us. This deeper ailment is what Jesus rather is targeting first. He obediently has to go to the cross to do that.
