Context:From Thy Heart Forgive
- Before - Binding/loosing trespass of a brother
- After - no more twain but one flesh
What is man believing/doing?:
- repeatedly requiring forgiveness
- inquiring as to how often forgiveness is best
- not forgiving the debt of a fellowservant that could pay but not all at once
What is making man to believe/do as he is doing?:
- taking advantage of others' forgiveness
- a sincere inquiry of what Jesus would say of this
- so as to not be in debt anymore
Notes:
If you do not believe in the reckoning of accounts with the Lord (as many do not) it is near impossible to understand forgiveness on the scale and of the substance Jesus means for it.
Sin here is seen as a debt without the means to pay it back. The reader need not know the line item details of each account, because the sin is first and foremost the bottom line in consideration of the obvious inability to pay. The debts that we attempt to restore to others is not even paid in the same currency as the debt each of us owe to our God. Had we not had the inability to pay we would likely not be in debt in the first place.
Key Messages:
What does this say about our present condition?
- Trespass among us is as common as a sneeze; repeated trespass as continual as common allergies. Indebtedness, what someone now owes you, seems to become more the issue than the original trespass. Indebtedness as perceived by the violated can easily rise to the level of the debtors inability to ever pay it back, whether justifiably so or not.
- Forgiveness is often held as something earned, something non negotiable, and if failed at voidable. The Lord's forgiveness is lightly esteemed and has little weight on our scales of justice. we even confuse His forgiveness as operating much like our own.
