Today's Verse:

kjv@Matthew:22:1-14

kjv@Matthew:22:1 @ And Jesus answered and spake unto them again by parables, and said,

kjv@Matthew:22:2 @ The kingdom of heaven is like unto a certain king, which made a marriage for his son,

kjv@Matthew:22:3 @ And sent forth his servants to call them that were bidden to the wedding: and they would not come.

kjv@Matthew:22:4 @ Again, he sent forth other servants, saying, Tell them which are bidden, Behold, I have prepared my dinner: my oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready: come unto the marriage.

kjv@Matthew:22:5 @ But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his farm, another to his merchandise:

kjv@Matthew:22:6 @ And the remnant took his servants, and entreated them spitefully, and slew them.

kjv@Matthew:22:7 @ But when the king heard thereof, he was wroth: and he sent forth his armies, and destroyed those murderers, and burned up their city.

kjv@Matthew:22:8 @ Then saith he to his servants, The wedding is ready, but they which were bidden were not worthy.

kjv@Matthew:22:9 @ Go ye therefore into the highways, and as many as ye shall find, bid to the marriage.

kjv@Matthew:22:10 @ So those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together all as many as they found, both bad and good: and the wedding was furnished with guests.

kjv@Matthew:22:11 @ And when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man which had not on a wedding garment:

kjv@Matthew:22:12 @ And he saith unto him, Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment? And he was speechless.

kjv@Matthew:22:13 @ Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

kjv@Matthew:22:14 @ For many are called, but few are chosen.

Today's notes: Bidden Come

Context:

What is man believing/doing?:

What is making man to believe/do as he is doing?:

Notes:

The first grammatical form is more closely "calling the called". The second contextually indicates calling for the remaining citizens regardless of standing. Before we gentiles could be invited the Jews first had to be graciously invited and defiantly refuse.

The initial guests put down for their murderous treatment are put down more properly by a band of soldiers. If this is to mean Jerusalem in 70 AD, it suggests either that nowhere near as many as could have been sent or else it didn't take as many as were sent to accomplish this divine judgment performed at the hands of the Romans.

Dinner in this tongue is depicting the noon day meal. Early into the long seven day feast, in advance of this first meal the unrighteous attendees are found and separated out.

Clothing/garments often symbolize righteousness, a man dawning wedding garments is wearing a righteousness God has given to him, a man in street clothes continues to wear his own self righteousness and therefore is sentenced to outer darkness for blatant disrespect.

Good and bad in this case have little to do with righteousness. Contrary, it has everything to do with the occasion of Christ's wedding and the respect we give to it. On our part it is the accepting of the invitation and the coming to the wedding, accepting and being dressed in the ceremonial righteousness given all guests by the host for the occasion.

Key Messages:

What does this say about our present condition?
  1. To many, heaven is not about what great thing is happening to Jesus, it is all about what is happening to them else what they are able to do for themselves. It can raise and puff up the entire group to do things that violate common decency, even the religious morality they claim to profess. This goes to show the depth and disparity between the two contradictory systems of belief and gravity exerted upon the group as a whole.
  2. For as much as we believe in independence and freedom of choice, we are proven to act in large consistent confederate bands, at least as it comes to the larger scale movements of God. From within these tight bands in or out then there appears some measure of individual choice primarily as to the source/occasion of one's righteousness.
