kjv@Matthew:27:1 @ When the morning was come, all the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death:

kjv@Matthew:27:2 @ And when they had bound him, they led him away, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor.

kjv@Matthew:27:3 @ Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders,

kjv@Matthew:27:4 @ Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? see thou to that.

Today's notes: Betraying Innocent Blood

Context:

Before - Peter's Dilemma
After - for envy delivered Him

What is man believing/doing?:

moving the trial to governor Pontius Pilate
seeking to return the betrayal money to the Chiefs and elders
not accepting the return of the money
tossing the money at the judges and then hanging self
buying a field with the money to bury strangers

What is making man to believe/do as he is doing?:

they lack the legal power with Rome to execute their judgment
seeing that the betrayal has led to complete condemnation
the money being returned as repentance is no concern of theirs
Whatever Judas' reasoning was for the betrayal it appears that he did not consider that it would lead to the counsels condemnation of death or else his feelings about it should Jesus be convicted. The spiritual reality is likely that God has stepped aside and therefore HIS graces no longer protect him from the torment of the devils that possess him. He could not bare to live reality being such.
the money now is seen as blood money attached to a suicide and cannot be commingled with the Korban treasury, it now has no rightful claimant and is being laundered via a charitable cause

Notes:

The blood of Jesus is conveniently being detached from consideration because that would point to the counsel's guilt, but they of course would not see it that way. Guilt is much more easily deflected by groups who firmly hold each member accountable to the best interests of each other person in the group.

What does this say about our present condition?

Betrayal is always seen as an ultimate sign of weakness, even amongst thieves, only exceeded by the cowardly remorse of being self convicted of such afterwards.
Not all repentance is equal. Peter's repentance will be toward the Lord that he denied and will save his very soul. Judas' repentance is towards those he feels co-conspirator with, an veiled attempt to transfer or spread the guilt which his co-conspirators will have none of, it brings him to the taking of his own life thinking that that would relieve his souls torment. There are several degrees there between, all but one less than the repentance true repentance is about.
It is frequently the case where the guilty party declares had they known this was going to lead to that they'd never had done this. Grave sin waits cloaked behind a veil enticing by other more justifiable/adventurous means; which says more about our mechanisms of justification than anything that the sin itself would hold.
Innocent blood is a foreign concept to zealous legalistic sinners.
