Today's notes: Measure Ye Mete

Context:

• Before - the life more than meat
  
• After - do to you, do for them? ask
  

What is man believing/doing?:

• judging others hypocritically
  
• not judging others at all (impossible?)
  

What is making man to believe/do as he is doing?:

• legalism or self righteousness, estimation of self above others' seeing or being presented the need/occasion without first examining self in order to see more clearly
  
• fear of being judged, belief that no measure can be just or that all judgement is hypocritical, idea that no mote or beam need be removed or that we are not the ones to do it
  
• sense judgement may be appropriate but the measure out of wack
  

Notes:

Interesting that those who quote this passage as meaning that we should not judge are using it to judge those who do.

The church is placed in a no win situation by it's critics by the misuse if this passage, damned if it does judge and damned if it doesn't; in their judgment it can do no right in any measure. In response, most believers choose the non-judgmental path of least resistance so as not to be outwardly targeted, but they are. The passage almost seems to apply to the critics and the soft bellied more often and to a greater extent than the adherents.

Judgment typically is better suited to established counsels. The church is no different as long as the counsels are clear and of sound judgment. The universal church took after itself throughout the Reformation and a great measure of injustice was mete out.

The inability to judge ones own matters correctly in clinical terms is called insanity. The inability to help others to judge matters they've yet to correctly judge is called heartlessness. Likewise, the ability to help others in unproductive ways is called foolishness.

Key Messages:

What does this say about our present condition?

1. Unfeigned judgment is nearly impossible without the Lord's work upon us. Not knowing that may well be the larger beam in a great many eyes. Even nonjudgmental-ism is rigorously judgmental as is holding right and wrong as equals.
   
2. A recent group of high schoolers was asked what was the worst thing one of their friends could do. They overwhelming responded "ratting out someone else (tattling)". The crime was not the guilty deed, it was the exposure of it to someone that might do something about it.
