*
Paul ,
an apostle of Jesus Christ by the commandment of God our Saviour ,
and Lord Jesus Christ ,
which is our hope ;
*
Unto Timothy ,
my own son in the faith :
Grace ,
mercy ,
and peace ,
from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord .
*
As I besought (
5656 )
thee to abide still (
5658 )
at Ephesus ,
when I went (
5740 )
into Macedonia ,
that thou mightest charge (
5661 )
some that they teach no other doctrine (
5721 ),
*
Neither give heed (
5721 )
to fables and endless genealogies ,
which minister (
5719 )
questions ,
rather than godly edifying which is in faith :
so do .
*
Now the end of the commandment is (
5748 )
charity out of a pure heart ,
and of a good conscience ,
and of faith unfeigned :
*
From which some having swerved (
5660 )
have turned aside (
5648 )
unto vain jangling ;
*
Desiring (
5723 )
to be (
5750 )
teachers of the law ;
understanding (
5723 )
neither what they say (
5719 ),
nor whereof they affirm (
5736 ).
*
But we know (
5758 )
that the law is good ,
if a man use (
5741 )
it lawfully ;
*
Knowing (
5761 )
this ,
that the law is not made (
5736 )
for a righteous man ,
but for the lawless and disobedient ,
for the ungodly and for sinners ,
for unholy and profane ,
for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers ,
for manslayers ,
*
For whoremongers ,
for them that defile themselves with mankind ,
for menstealers ,
for liars ,
for perjured persons ,
and if there be any other thing that is contrary (
5736 )
to sound (
5723 )
doctrine ;
*
According to the glorious gospel of the blessed God ,
which was committed to my trust (
5681 ).
*
And I thank (
5719 )
Christ Jesus our Lord ,
who hath enabled (
5660 )
me ,
for that he counted (
5662 )
me faithful ,
putting me (
5642 )
into the ministry ;
*
Who was (
5752 )
before a blasphemer ,
and a persecutor ,
and injurious :
but I obtained mercy (
5681 ),
because I did (
5656 )
it ignorantly (
5723 )
in unbelief .
*
And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant (
5656 )
with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus .
*
This is a faithful saying ,
and worthy of all acceptation ,
that Christ Jesus came (
5627 )
into the world to save (
5658 )
sinners ;
of whom I am (
5748 )
chief .
*
Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy (
5681 ),
that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth (
5672 )
all longsuffering ,
for a pattern to them which should hereafter (
5723 )
believe (
5721 )
on him to life everlasting .
*
Now unto the King eternal ,
immortal ,
invisible ,
the only wise God ,
be honour and glory for ever and ever .
Amen .
*
This charge I commit (
5731 )
unto thee ,
son Timothy ,
according to the prophecies which went before (
5723 )
on thee ,
that thou by them mightest war (
5735 )
a good warfare ;
*
Holding (
5723 )
faith ,
and a good conscience ;
which some having put away (
5666 )
concerning faith have made shipwreck (
5656 ):
*
Of whom is (
5748 )
Hymenaeus and Alexander ;
whom I have delivered (
5656 )
unto Satan ,
that they may learn (
5686 )
not to blaspheme (
5721 ).
*
I exhort (
5719 )
therefore ,
that ,
first of all ,
supplications ,
prayers ,
intercessions ,
and giving of thanks ,
be made (
5745 )
for all men ;
*
For kings ,
and for all that are (
5752 )
in authority ;
that we may lead (
5725 )
a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty .
*
For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour ;
*
Who will have (
5719 )
all men to be saved (
5683 ),
and to come (
5629 )
unto the knowledge of the truth .
*
For there is one God ,
and one mediator between God and men ,
the man Christ Jesus ;
*
Who gave (
5631 )
himself a ransom for all ,
to be testified in due time .
*
Whereunto I am ordained (
5681 )
a preacher ,
and an apostle , (
I speak (
5719 )
the truth in Christ ,
and lie (
5736 )
not ;)
a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and verity .
*
I will (
5736 )
therefore that men pray (
5738 )
every where ,
lifting up (
5723 )
holy hands ,
without wrath and doubting .
*
In like manner also ,
that women adorn (
5721 )
themselves in modest apparel ,
with shamefacedness and sobriety ;
not with broided hair ,
or gold ,
or pearls ,
or costly array ;
*
But (
which becometh (
5719 )
women professing (
5740 )
godliness )
with good works .
*
Let the woman learn (
5720 )
in silence with all subjection .
*
But I suffer (
5719 )
not a woman to teach (
5721 ),
nor to usurp authority (
5721 )
over the man ,
but to be (
5750 )
in silence .
*
For Adam was first formed (
5681 ),
then Eve .
*
And Adam was not deceived (
5681 ),
but the woman being deceived (
5685 )
was (
5754 )
in the transgression .
*
Notwithstanding she shall be saved (
5701 )
in childbearing ,
if they continue (
5661 )
in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety .
*
This is a true saying ,
If a man desire (
5731 )
the office of a bishop ,
he desireth (
5719 )
a good work .
*
A bishop then must (
5748 )
be (
5750 )
blameless ,
the husband of one wife ,
vigilant ,
sober ,
of good behaviour ,
given to hospitality ,
apt to teach ;
*
Not given to wine ,
no striker ,
not greedy of filthy lucre ;
but patient ,
not a brawler ,
not covetous ;
*
One that ruleth (
5734 )
well his own house ,
having (
5723 )
his children in subjection with all gravity ;
* (
For if a man know not how (
5758 )
to rule (
5629 )
his own house ,
how shall he take care of (
5695 )
the church of God ?)
*
Not a novice ,
lest being lifted up with pride (
5685 )
he fall (
5632 )
into the condemnation of the devil .
*
Moreover he must (
5748 )
have (
5721 )
a good report of them which are without ;
lest he fall (
5632 )
into reproach and the snare of the devil .
*
Likewise must the deacons be grave ,
not doubletongued ,
not given (
5723 )
to much wine ,
not greedy of filthy lucre ;
*
Holding (
5723 )
the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience .
*
And let these also first be proved (
5744 );
then let them use the office of a deacon (
5720 ),
being (
5752 )
found blameless .
*
Even so must their wives be grave ,
not slanderers ,
sober ,
faithful in all things .
*
Let the deacons be (
5749 )
the husbands of one wife ,
ruling (
5734 )
their children and their own houses well .
*
For they that have used the office of a deacon (
5660 )
well purchase (
5731 )
to themselves a good 2570 #
degree ,
and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus .
*
These things write I (
5719 )
unto thee ,
hoping (
5723 )
to come (
5629 )
unto thee shortly :
*
But if I tarry long (
5725 ),
that thou mayest know (
5762 )
how thou oughtest (
5748 )
to behave thyself (
5745 )
in the house of God ,
which is (
5748 )
the church of the living (
5723 )
God ,
the pillar and ground of the truth .
*
And without controversy great is (
5748 )
the mystery of godliness :
God was manifest (
5681 )
in the flesh ,
justified (
5681 )
in the Spirit ,
seen (
5681 )
of angels ,
preached (
5681 )
unto the Gentiles ,
believed on (
5681 )
in the world ,
received up (
5681 )
into glory .
*
Now the Spirit speaketh (
5719 )
expressly ,
that in the latter times some shall depart from (
5695 )
the faith ,
giving heed (
5723 )
to seducing spirits ,
and doctrines of devils ;
*
Speaking lies in hypocrisy ;
having their conscience seared with a hot iron (
5772 );
*
Forbidding (
5723 )
to marry (
5721 ),
and commanding to abstain from (
5733 )
meats ,
which God hath created (
5656 )
to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know (
5761 )
the truth .
*
For every creature of God is good ,
and nothing to be refused ,
if it be received (
5746 )
with thanksgiving :
*
For it is sanctified (
5743 )
by the word of God and prayer .
*
If thou put the brethren in remembrance (
5734 )
of these things ,
thou shalt be (
5704 )
a good minister of Jesus Christ ,
nourished up (
5746 )
in the words of faith and of good doctrine ,
whereunto thou hast attained (
5758 ).
*
But refuse (
5737 )
profane and old wives fables ,
and exercise (
5720 )
thyself rather unto godliness .
*
For bodily exercise profiteth (
5748 )
little :
but godliness is (
5748 )
profitable unto all things ,
having (
5723 )
promise of the life that now is ,
and of that which is to come (
5723 ).
*
This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation .
*
For therefore we both labour (
5719 )
and suffer reproach (
5743 ),
because we trust (
5758 )
in the living (
5723 )
God ,
who is (
5748 )
the Saviour of all men ,
specially of those that believe .
*
These things command (
5720 )
and teach (
5720 ).
*
Let no man despise (
5720 )
thy youth ;
but be thou (
5737 )
an example of the believers ,
in word ,
in conversation ,
in charity ,
in spirit ,
in faith ,
in purity .
*
Till I come (
5736 ),
give attendance (
5720 )
to reading ,
to exhortation ,
to doctrine .
*
Neglect (
5720 )
not the gift that is in thee ,
which was given (
5681 )
thee by prophecy ,
with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery .
*
Meditate upon (
5720 )
these things ;
give thyself (
5749 )
wholly to them ;
that thy profiting may (
5753 )
appear to all .
*
Take heed (
5720 )
unto thyself ,
and unto the doctrine ;
continue (
5720 )
in them :
for in doing (
5723 )
this thou shalt both save (
5692 )
thyself ,
and them that hear (
5723 )
thee .
*
Rebuke (
5661 )
not an elder ,
but intreat (
5720 )
him as a father ;
and the younger men as brethren ;
*
The elder women as mothers ;
the younger as sisters ,
with all purity .
*
Honour (
5720 )
widows that are widows indeed .
*
But if any widow have (
5719 )
children or nephews ,
let them learn (
5720 )
first to shew piety (
5721 )
at home ,
and to requite (
5721 )
their parents :
for that is (
5748 )
good and acceptable before God .
*
Now she that is a widow indeed ,
and desolate (
5772 ),
trusteth (
5758 )
in God ,
and continueth (
5719 )
in supplications and prayers night and day .
*
But she that liveth in pleasure (
5723 )
is dead (
5758 )
while she liveth (
5723 ).
*
And these things give in charge (
5720 ),
that they may be (
5753 )
blameless .
*
But if any provide (
5719 )
not for his own ,
and specially for those of his own house ,
he hath denied (
5763 )
the faith ,
and is (
5748 )
worse than an infidel .
*
Let not a widow be taken into the number (
5744 )
under threescore years old ,
having been (
5756 )
the wife of one man ,
*
Well reported of (
5746 )
for good works ;
if she have brought up (
5656 )
children ,
if she have lodged strangers (
5656 ),
if she have washed (
5656 )
the saints feet ,
if she have relieved (
5656 )
the afflicted (
5746 ),
if she have diligently followed (
5656 )
every good work .
*
But the younger widows refuse (
5737 ):
for when they have begun to wax wanton against (
5661 )
Christ ,
they will (
5719 )
marry (
5721 );
*
Having (
5723 )
damnation ,
because they have cast off (
5656 )
their first faith .
*
And withal they learn (
5719 )
to be idle ,
wandering about (
5740 )
from house to house ;
and not only idle ,
but tattlers also and busybodies ,
speaking (
5723 )
things which they ought (
5752 )
not .
*
I will (
5736 )
therefore that the younger women marry (
5721 ),
bear children (
5721 ),
guide the house (
5721 ),
give (
5721 )
none occasion to the adversary (
5740 )
to speak reproachfully .
*
For some are already turned aside (
5648 )
after Satan .
*
If any man or woman that believeth have (
5719 )
widows ,
let them relieve (
5720 )
them ,
and let not the church be charged (
5744 );
that it may relieve (
5661 )
them that are widows indeed .
*
Let the elders that rule (
5761 )
well be counted worthy (
5744 )
of double honour ,
especially they who labour (
5723 )
in the word and doctrine .
*
For the scripture saith (
5719 ),
Thou shalt not muzzle (
5692 )
the ox that treadeth out the corn (
5723 ).
And ,
The labourer is worthy of his reward .
*
Against an elder receive (
5737 )
not an accusation ,
but before two or three witnesses .
*
Them that sin (
5723 )
rebuke (
5720 )
before all ,
that others also may (
5725 )
fear .
*
I charge (
5736 )
thee before God ,
and the Lord Jesus Christ ,
and the elect angels ,
that thou observe (
5661 )
these things without preferring one before another ,
doing (
5723 )
nothing by partiality .
*
Lay hands suddenly on (
5720 )
no man ,
neither be partaker (
5720 )
of other mens sins :
keep (
5720 )
thyself pure .
*
Drink no longer water (
5720 ),
but use (
5737 )
a little wine for thy stomachs sake and thine often infirmities .
*
Some mens sins are (
5748 )
open beforehand ,
going before (
5723 )
to judgment ;
and some men they follow after (
5719 ).
*
Likewise also the good works of some are (
5748 )
manifest beforehand ;
and they that are (
5723 )
otherwise cannot (
5736 )
be hid (
5650 ).
*
Let as many servants as are (
5748 )
under the yoke count (
5737 )
their own masters worthy of all honour ,
that the name of God and his doctrine be not blasphemed (
5747 ).
*
And they that have (
5723 )
believing masters ,
let them not despise (
5720 )
them ,
because they are (
5748 )
brethren ;
but rather do them service (
5720 ),
because they are (
5748 )
faithful and beloved ,
partakers (
5740 )
of the benefit .
These things teach (
5720 )
and exhort (
5720 ).
*
If any man teach otherwise (
5719 ),
and consent (
5736 )
not to wholesome (
5723 )
words ,
even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ ,
and to the doctrine which is according to godliness ;
*
He is proud (
5769 ),
knowing (
5740 )
nothing ,
but doting (
5723 )
about questions and strifes of words ,
whereof cometh (
5736 )
envy ,
strife ,
railings ,
evil surmisings ,
*
Perverse disputings of men of corrupt (
5772 )
minds ,
and destitute (
5772 )
of the truth ,
supposing (
5723 )
that gain is (
5750 )
godliness :
from such withdraw thyself (
5737 ).
*
But godliness with contentment is (
5748 )
great gain .
*
For we brought (
5656 )
nothing into this world ,
and it is certain we can (
5736 )
carry nothing out (
5629 ).
*
And having (
5723 )
food and raiment let us be therewith content (
5701 ).
*
But they that will (
5740 )
be rich (
5721 )
fall (
5719 )
into temptation and a snare ,
and into many foolish and hurtful lusts ,
which drown (
5719 )
men in destruction and perdition .
*
For the love of money is (
5748 )
the root of all evil :
which while some coveted after (
5734 ),
they have erred (
5681 )
from the faith ,
and pierced themselves through (
5656 )
with many sorrows .
*
But thou ,
O man of God ,
flee (
5720 )
these things ;
and follow after (
5720 )
righteousness ,
godliness ,
faith ,
love ,
patience ,
meekness .
*
Fight (
5737 )
the good fight of faith ,
lay hold on (
5634 )
eternal life ,
whereunto thou art also called (
5681 ),
and hast professed (
5656 )
a good profession before many witnesses .
*
I give thee charge (
5719 )
in the sight of God ,
who quickeneth (
5723 )
all things ,
and before Christ Jesus ,
who before Pontius Pilate witnessed (
5660 )
a good confession ;
*
That thou keep (
5658 )
this commandment without spot ,
unrebukeable ,
until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ :
*
Which in his times he shall shew (
5692 ),
who is the blessed and only Potentate ,
the King of kings (
5723 ),
and Lord of lords (
5723 );
*
Who only hath (
5723 )
immortality ,
dwelling (
5723 )
in the light which no man can approach unto ;
whom no man hath seen (
5627 ),
nor can (
5736 )
see (
5629 ):
to whom be honour and power everlasting .
Amen .
*
Charge (
5720 )
them that are rich in this world ,
that they be not highminded (
5721 ),
nor trust (
5760 )
in uncertain riches ,
but in the living (
5723 )
God ,
who giveth (
5723 )
us richly all things to enjoy ;
*
That they do good (
5721 ),
that they be rich (
5721 )
in good works ,
ready to distribute (
5750 ),
willing to communicate ;
*
Laying up in store (
5723 )
for themselves a good foundation against the time to come (
5723 ),
that they may lay hold on (
5638 )
eternal life .
*
O Timothy ,
keep (
5657 )
that which is committed to thy trust ,
avoiding (
5734 )
profane and vain babblings ,
and oppositions of science falsely so called :
*
Which some professing (
5740 )
have erred (
5656 )
concerning the faith .
Grace be with thee .
Amen .
The first to Timothy was written (
5648 )
from Laodicea ,
which is (
5748 )
the chiefest city of Phrygia Pacatiana .#
