* In the twelfth year of Ahaz king of Judah Hoshea the son of Elah began to reign over Israel in Samaria , nine years . * And he did evil in the sight of the LORD , but not like the kings of Israel who were before him . * Shalmaneser king of Assyria came up against him . And Hoshea became his servant and gave him taxes . * And the king of Assyria found treachery in Hoshea , for he had sent messengers to So , king of Egypt , and had brought no taxes to the king of Assyria , as before , year by year . And the king of Assyria shut him up and bound him in prison . * And the king of Assyria went up into all the land . And he went up to Samaria and besieged it three years . * In the ninth year of Hoshea , the king of Assyria took Samaria , and carried Israel away into Assyria . And he placed them in Halah , and in Habor [by ] the river Gozan , and in the cities of the Medes .
