* The former treatise have I made (5668 ), O Theophilus , of all that Jesus began (5662 ) both to do (5721 ) and teach (5721 ), * Until the day in which he was taken up (5681 ), after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments (5674 ) unto the apostles whom he had chosen (5668 ): * To whom also he shewed (5656 ) himself alive (5723 ) after his passion (5629 ) by many infallible proofs , being seen (5740 ) of them forty days , and speaking (5723 ) of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God : * And , being assembled together (5740 ) with them , commanded (5656 ) them that they should not depart (5745 ) from Jerusalem , but wait (5721 ) for the promise of the Father , which , saith he , ye have heard (5656 ) of me . * For John truly baptized (5656 ) with water ; but ye shall be baptized (5701 ) with the Holy Ghost not many days hence . * When they therefore were come together (5631 ), they asked (5707 ) of him , saying (5723 ), Lord , wilt thou at this time restore again (5719 ) the kingdom to Israel ? * And he said (5627 ) unto them , It is (5748 ) not for you to know (5629 ) the times or the seasons , which the Father hath put (5639 ) in his own power . * But ye shall receive (5695 ) power , after that the Holy Ghost is come (5631 ) upon you : and ye shall be (5704 ) witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem , and in all Judaea , and in Samaria , and unto the uttermost part of the earth . * And when he had spoken (5631 ) these things , while they beheld (5723 ), he was taken up (5681 ); and a cloud received (5627 ) him out of their sight . * And while they looked stedfastly (5713 ) (5723 ) toward heaven as he went up (5740 ), behold (5628 ), two men stood by (5715 ) them in white apparel ; * Which also said (5627 ), Ye men of Galilee , why stand ye (5758 ) gazing up (5723 ) into heaven ? this same Jesus , which is taken up (5685 ) from you into heaven , shall so come (5695 ) in like manner as ye have seen (5662 ) him go (5740 ) into heaven . * Then returned they (5656 ) unto Jerusalem from the mount called (5746 ) Olivet , which is (5748 ) from Jerusalem a sabbath days journey (5723 ). * And when they were come in (5627 ), they went up (5627 ) into an upper room , where abode (5713 ) (5723 ) both Peter , and James , and John , and Andrew , Philip , and Thomas , Bartholomew , and Matthew , James the son of Alphaeus , and Simon Zelotes , and Judas the brother of James . * These all continued (5713 ) (5723 ) with one accord in prayer and supplication , with the women , and Mary the mother of Jesus , and with his brethren . * And in those days Peter stood up (5631 ) in the midst of the disciples , and said (5627 ), (the number of names together were (5713 ) about an hundred and twenty ,) * Men and brethren , this scripture must (5713 ) needs have been fulfilled (5683 ), which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before (5627 ) concerning Judas , which was (5637 ) guide to them that took (5631 ) Jesus . * For he was (5713 ) numbered (5772 ) with us , and had obtained (5627 ) part of this ministry . * Now this man purchased (5662 ) a field with the reward of iniquity ; and falling (5637 ) headlong , he burst asunder (5656 ) in the midst , and all his bowels gushed out (5681 ). * And it was (5633 ) known unto all the dwellers (5723 ) at Jerusalem ; insomuch as that field is called (5683 ) in their proper tongue , Aceldama , that is to say (5748 ), The field of blood . * For it is written (5769 ) in the book of Psalms , Let his habitation be (5676 ) desolate , and let (5749 ) no man dwell (5723 ) therein : and his bishoprick let another take (5630 ). * Wherefore of these men which have companied (5631 ) with us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in (5627 ) and out (5627 ) among us , * Beginning (5671 ) from the baptism of John , unto that same day that he was taken up (5681 ) from us , must (5748 ) one be ordained (5635 ) to be a witness with us of his resurrection . * And they appointed (5627 ) two , Joseph called (5746 ) Barsabas , who was surnamed (5681 ) Justus , and Matthias . * And they prayed (5666 ), and said (5627 ), Thou , Lord , which knowest the hearts of all men , shew (5657 ) whether of these two thou hast chosen (5668 ), * That he may take (5629 ) part of this ministry and apostleship , from which Judas by transgression fell (5627 ), that he might go (5677 ) to his own place . * And they gave forth (5656 ) their lots ; and the lot fell (5627 ) upon Matthias ; and he was numbered (5681 ) with the eleven apostles . * And when the day of Pentecost was fully come (5745 ), they were (5713 ) all with one accord in one place . * And suddenly there came (5633 ) a sound from heaven as of a rushing (5730 ) mighty wind , and it filled (5656 ) all the house where they were (5713 ) sitting (5740 ). * And there appeared (5681 ) unto them cloven (5730 ) tongues like as of fire , and it sat (5656 ) upon each of them . * And they were all filled (5681 ) with the Holy Ghost , and began (5662 ) to speak with (5721 ) other tongues , as the Spirit gave (5707 ) them utterance (5738 ). * And there were (5713 ) dwelling (5723 ) at Jerusalem Jews , devout men , out of every nation under heaven . * Now when this was (5637 ) noised abroad , the multitude came together (5627 ), and were confounded (5681 ), because that every man heard (5707 ) them speak (5723 ) in his own language . * And they were all amazed (5710 ) and marvelled (5707 ), saying (5723 ) one to another , Behold (5628 ), are (5748 ) not all these which speak (5723 ) Galilaeans ? * And how hear (5719 ) we every man in our own tongue , wherein we were born (5681 )? * Parthians , and Medes , and Elamites , and the dwellers (5723 ) in Mesopotamia , and in Judaea , and Cappadocia , in Pontus , and Asia , * Phrygia , and Pamphylia , in Egypt , and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene , and strangers (5723 ) of Rome , Jews and proselytes , * Cretes and Arabians , we do hear (5719 ) them speak (5723 ) in our tongues the wonderful works of God . * And they were all amazed (5710 ), and were in doubt (5707 ), saying (5723 ) one to another , What meaneth (5722 ) (5750 ) this ? * Others mocking (5723 ) said (5707 ), These men are (5748 ) full (5772 ) of new wine . * But Peter , standing up (5685 ) with the eleven , lifted up (5656 ) his voice , and said (5662 ) unto them , Ye men of Judaea , and all ye that dwell (5723 ) at Jerusalem , be (5749 ) this known unto you , and hearken (5663 ) to my words : * For these are not drunken (5719 ), as ye suppose (5719 ), seeing it is (5748 ) but the third hour of the day . * But this is (5748 ) that which was spoken (5772 ) by the prophet Joel ; * And it shall come to pass (5704 ) in the last days , saith (5719 ) God , I will pour out (5692 ) of my Spirit upon all flesh : and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy (5692 ), and your young men shall see (5695 ) visions , and your old men shall dream (5701 ) dreams : * And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out (5692 ) in those days of my Spirit ; and they shall prophesy (5692 ): * And I will shew (5692 ) wonders in heaven above , and signs in the earth beneath ; blood , and fire , and vapour of smoke : * The sun shall be turned (5691 ) into darkness , and the moon into blood , before that great and notable day of the Lord come (5629 ): * And it shall come to pass (5704 ), that whosoever shall call on (5672 ) the name of the Lord shall be saved (5701 ). * Ye men of Israel , hear (5657 ) these words ; Jesus of Nazareth , a man approved (5772 ) of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs , which God did (5656 ) by him in the midst of you , as ye yourselves also know (5758 ): * Him , being delivered by the determinate (5772 ) counsel and foreknowledge of God , ye have taken (5631 ), and by wicked hands have crucified (5660 ) and slain (5627 ): * Whom God hath raised up (5656 ), having loosed (5660 ) the pains of death : because it was (5713 ) not possible that he should be holden (5745 ) of it . * For David speaketh (5719 ) concerning him , I foresaw (5710 ) the Lord always before my face , for he is (5748 ) on my right hand , that I should not be moved (5686 ): * Therefore did my heart rejoice (5681 ), and my tongue was glad (5662 ); moreover also my flesh shall rest (5692 ) in hope : * Because thou wilt not leave (5692 ) my soul in hell , neither wilt thou suffer (5692 ) thine Holy One to see (5629 ) corruption . * Thou hast made known (5656 ) to me the ways of life ; thou shalt make me full (5692 ) of joy with thy countenance . * Men and brethren , let me (5752 ) freely speak (5629 ) unto you of the patriarch David , that he is both dead (5656 ) and buried (5648 ), and his sepulchre is (5748 ) with us unto this day . * Therefore being (5723 ) a prophet , and knowing (5761 ) that God had sworn (5656 ) with an oath to him , that of the fruit of his loins , according to the flesh , he would raise up (5693 ) Christ to sit (5658 ) on his throne ; * He seeing this before (5631 ) spake (5656 ) of the resurrection of Christ , that his soul was not left (5681 ) in hell , neither his flesh did see (5627 ) corruption . * This Jesus hath God raised up (5656 ), whereof we all are (5748 ) witnesses . * Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted (5685 ), and having received (5631 ) of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost , he hath shed forth (5656 ) this , which ye now see (5719 ) and hear (5719 ). * For David is not ascended (5627 ) into the heavens : but he saith (5719 ) himself , The LORD said (5627 ) unto my Lord , Sit thou (5737 ) on my right hand , * Until I make (5632 ) thy foes thy footstool . * Therefore let all the house of Israel know (5720 ) assuredly , that God hath made (5656 ) that same Jesus , whom ye have crucified (5656 ), both Lord and Christ . * Now when they heard (5660 ) this , they were pricked (5648 ) in their heart , and said (5627 ) unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles , Men and brethren , what shall we do (5692 )? * Then Peter said (5713 ) unto them , Repent (5657 ), and be baptized (5682 ) every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins , and ye shall receive (5695 ) the gift of the Holy Ghost . * For the promise is (5748 ) unto you , and to your children , and to all that are afar off , even as many as the Lord our God shall call (5667 ). * And with many other words did he testify (5711 ) and exhort (5707 ), saying (5723 ), Save yourselves (5682 ) from this untoward generation . * Then they that gladly received (5666 ) his word were baptized (5681 ): and the same day there were added (5681 ) unto them about three thousand souls . * And they continued (5713 ) stedfastly (5723 ) in the apostles doctrine and fellowship , and in breaking of bread , and in prayers . * And fear came upon (5633 ) every soul : and many wonders and signs were done (5711 ) by the apostles . * And all that believed (5723 ) were (5713 ) together , and had (5707 ) all things common ; * And sold (5707 ) their possessions and goods , and parted (5707 ) them to all men , as every man had (5707 ) need . * And they , continuing (5723 ) daily with one accord in the temple , and breaking (5723 ) bread from house to house , did eat (5707 ) their meat with gladness and singleness of heart , * Praising (5723 ) God , and having (5723 ) favour with all the people . And the Lord added (5707 ) to the church daily such as should be saved (5746 ). * Now Peter and John went up (5707 ) together into the temple at the hour of prayer , being the ninth hour .
