Genesis:39-41

wbs@Genesis:39:1 @ And Joseph was brought down to Egypt: and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him of the hands of the Ishmaelites, who had brought him down thither.

wbs@Genesis:39:2 @ And the LORD was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man: and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.

wbs@Genesis:39:3 @ And his master saw that the LORD was with him, and that the LORD made all that he did to prosper in his hand.

wbs@Genesis:39:4 @ And Joseph found grace in his sight, and he served him: and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand.

wbs@Genesis:39:5 @ And it came to pass from the time that he had made him overseer in his house, and over all that he had, that the LORD blessed the Egyptian's house for Joseph's sake: and the blessing of the LORD was on all that he had in the house, and in the field.

wbs@Genesis:39:6 @ And he left all that he had in Joseph's hand; and he knew not aught he had, save the bread which he ate; and Joseph was a goodly person, and well favored.

wbs@Genesis:39:7 @ And it came to pass after these things, that his master's wife cast her eyes upon Joseph: and she said, Lie with me.

wbs@Genesis:39:8 @ But he refused, and said to his master's wife, Behold, my master knoweth not what is with me in the house, and he hath committed all that he hath to my hand:

wbs@Genesis:39:9 @ There is none greater in his house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?

wbs@Genesis:39:10 @ And it came to pass, as she spoke to Joseph day by day, that he hearkened not to her, to lie by her, or to be with her.

wbs@Genesis:39:11 @ And it came to pass, about this time, that Joseph went into the house to do his business; and there was none of the men of the house there within.

wbs@Genesis:39:12 @ And she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me: and he left his garment in her hand, and fled, and went out.

wbs@Genesis:39:13 @ And it came to pass, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand, and had fled forth,

wbs@Genesis:39:14 @ That she called to the men of her house, and spoke to them, saying, See, he hath brought in a Hebrew to us to mock us: he came in to me to lie with me, and I cried with a loud voice:

wbs@Genesis:39:15 @ And it came to pass, when he heard that I raised my voice and cried, that he left his garment with me, and fled, and went out.

wbs@Genesis:39:16 @ And she laid up his garment by her until his lord came home.

wbs@Genesis:39:17 @ And she spoke to him according to these words, saying, The Hebrew servant, which thou hast brought to us, came in to me to mock me.

wbs@Genesis:39:18 @ And it came to pass, as I raised my voice and cried, that he left his garment with me, and fled.

wbs@Genesis:39:19 @ And it came to pass, when his master heard the words of his wife, which she spoke to him, saying, After this manner did thy servant to me; that his wrath was kindled.

wbs@Genesis:39:20 @ And Joseph's master took him, and put him into the prison, a place where the king's prisoners were bound: and he was there in the prison.

wbs@Genesis:39:21 @ But the LORD was with Joseph, and showed him mercy, and gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison.

wbs@Genesis:39:22 @ And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph's hand all the prisoners that were in the prison; and whatever they did there, was done by him.

wbs@Genesis:39:23 @ The keeper of the prison looked not to any thing that was under his hand; because the LORD was with him: and that which he did the LORD made it to prosper.

wbs@Genesis:40:1 @ And it came to pass after these things, that the butler of the king of Egypt and his baker had offended their lord the king of Egypt.

wbs@Genesis:40:2 @ And Pharaoh was wroth with two of his officers, with the chief of the butlers, and with the chief of the bakers.

wbs@Genesis:40:3 @ And he put them in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, into the prison, the place where Joseph was bound.

wbs@Genesis:40:4 @ And the captain of the guard charged Joseph with them, and he served them; and they continued a season in custody.

wbs@Genesis:40:5 @ And they dreamed a dream both of them, each man his dream in one night, each man according to the interpretation of his dream; the butler and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were bound in the prison.

wbs@Genesis:40:6 @ And Joseph came to them in the morning, and looked upon them, and behold, they were sad.

wbs@Genesis:40:7 @ And he asked Pharaoh's officers that were with him in the ward of his lord's house, saying, Why look ye so sad to-day?

wbs@Genesis:40:8 @ And they said to him, We have dreamed a dream, and there is no interpreter of it. And Joseph said to them, Do not interpretations belong to God? tell me them, I pray you.

wbs@Genesis:40:9 @ And the chief butler told his dream to Joseph, and said to him, In my dream, behold, a vine was before me;

wbs@Genesis:40:10 @ And on the vine were three branches: and it was as though it budded, and its blossoms shot forth; and its clusters brought forth ripe grapes:

wbs@Genesis:40:11 @ And Pharaoh's cup was in my hand: and I took the grapes, and pressed them into Pharaoh's cup, and I gave the cup into Pharaoh's hand.

wbs@Genesis:40:12 @ And Joseph said to him, This is the interpretation of it: The three branches are three days;

wbs@Genesis:40:13 @ Yet within three days shall Pharaoh lift up thy head, and restore thee to thy place: and thou shalt deliver Pharaoh's cup into his hand, after the former manner when thou wast his butler.

wbs@Genesis:40:14 @ But think on me when it shall be well with thee, and show kindness to me, I pray thee, and make mention of me to Pharaoh, and bring me out of this house:

wbs@Genesis:40:15 @ For indeed I was stolen away from the land of the Hebrews: and here also have I done nothing that they should put me into the dungeon.

wbs@Genesis:40:16 @ When the chief baker saw that the interpretation was good, he said to Joseph, I also was in my dream, and behold, I had three white baskets on my head:

wbs@Genesis:40:17 @ And in the uppermost basket there was of all manner of bake-meats for Pharaoh; and the birds ate them out of the basket upon my head.

wbs@Genesis:40:18 @ And Joseph answered, and said, This is the interpretation of it: The three baskets are three days:

wbs@Genesis:40:19 @ Yet within three days shall Pharaoh lift up thy head from off thee, and shall hang thee on a tree; and the birds shall eat thy flesh from off thee.

wbs@Genesis:40:20 @ And it came to pass the third day, which was Pharaoh's birth-day, that he made a feast to all his servants: and he lifted up the head of the chief butler and of the chief baker among his servants.

wbs@Genesis:40:21 @ And he restored the chief butler to his butlership again; and he gave the cup into Pharaoh's hand:

wbs@Genesis:40:22 @ But he hanged the chief baker: as Joseph had interpreted to them.

wbs@Genesis:40:23 @ Yet the chief butler did not remember Joseph, but forgot him.

wbs@Genesis:41:1 @ And it came to pass at the end of two full years, that Pharaoh dreamed: and behold, he stood by the river.

wbs@Genesis:41:2 @ And behold, there came up out of the river seven well-favored cows and fat-fleshed; and they fed in a meadow.

wbs@Genesis:41:3 @ And behold, seven other cows came up after them out of the river, ill-favored and lean-fleshed; and stood by the other cows upon the brink of the river.

wbs@Genesis:41:4 @ And the ill-favored and lean-fleshed cows ate up the seven well-favored and fat cows. So Pharaoh awoke.

wbs@Genesis:41:5 @ And he slept and dreamed the second time: and behold, seven ears of corn came up upon one stalk, rank and good.

wbs@Genesis:41:6 @ And behold, seven thin ears and blasted with the east wind sprung up after them.

wbs@Genesis:41:7 @ And the seven thin ears devoured the seven rank and full ears. And Pharaoh awoke, and behold, it was a dream.

wbs@Genesis:41:8 @ And it came to pass in the morning, that his spirit was troubled; and he sent and called for all the magicians of Egypt, and all the wise men thereof: and Pharaoh told them his dream; but there was none that could interpret them to Pharaoh.

wbs@Genesis:41:9 @ Then spoke the chief butler to Pharaoh, saying, I do remember my faults this day:

wbs@Genesis:41:10 @ Pharaoh was wroth with his servants, and put me in custody in the captain of the guard's house, both me, and the chief baker:

wbs@Genesis:41:11 @ And we dreamed a dream in one night, I and he: we dreamed each man according to the interpretation of his dream.

wbs@Genesis:41:12 @ And there was there with us a young man, a Hebrew, servant to the captain of the guard; and we told him, and he interpreted to us our dreams; to each man according to his dream he interpreted.

wbs@Genesis:41:13 @ And it came to pass, as he interpreted to us, so it was: me he restored to my office, and him he hanged.

wbs@Genesis:41:14 @ Then Pharaoh sent and called Joseph, and they brought him hastily out of the dungeon: and he shaved himself, and changed his raiment, and came before Pharaoh.

wbs@Genesis:41:15 @ And Pharaoh said to Joseph, I have dreamed a dream, and there is none that can interpret it: and I have heard it said of thee, that thou canst understand a dream to interpret it.

wbs@Genesis:41:16 @ And Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, It is not in me: God will give Pharaoh an answer of peace.

wbs@Genesis:41:17 @ And Pharaoh said to Joseph, In my dream, behold, I stood upon the bank of the river:

wbs@Genesis:41:18 @ And behold, there came out of the river seven cows, fat-fleshed, and well-favored; and they fed in a meadow:

wbs@Genesis:41:19 @ And behold, seven other cows came out after them, poor, and very ill-favored, and lean-fleshed, such as I never saw in all the land of Egypt for badness:

wbs@Genesis:41:20 @ And the lean and the ill-favored cows ate up the first seven fat cows:

wbs@Genesis:41:21 @ And when they had eaten them up, it could not be known that they had eaten them; but they were still ill-favored, as at the beginning. So I awoke.

wbs@Genesis:41:22 @ And I saw in my dream, and behold, seven ears came up on one stalk, full and good:

wbs@Genesis:41:23 @ And behold, seven ears, withered, thin, and blasted with the east wind, sprung up after them:

wbs@Genesis:41:24 @ And the thin ears devoured the seven good ears: and I told this to the magicians; but there was none that could explain it to me.

wbs@Genesis:41:25 @ And Joseph said to Pharaoh, The dream of Pharaoh is one; God hath showed Pharaoh what he is about to do.

wbs@Genesis:41:26 @ The seven good cows are seven years; and the seven good ears are seven years: the dream is one.

wbs@Genesis:41:27 @ And the seven thin and ill-favored cows that came up after them are seven years; and the seven empty ears blasted with the east wind will be seven years of famine.

wbs@Genesis:41:28 @ This is the thing which I have spoken to Pharaoh: What God is about to do he showeth to Pharaoh.

wbs@Genesis:41:29 @ Behold, there come seven years of great plenty throughout all the land of Egypt:

wbs@Genesis:41:30 @ And there shall arise after them seven years of famine; and all the plenty shall be forgotten in the land of Egypt; and the famine shall consume the land;

wbs@Genesis:41:31 @ And the plenty shall not be known in the land by reason of the famine following: for it will be very grievous.

wbs@Genesis:41:32 @ And for that the dream was doubled to Pharaoh twice; it is because the thing is established by God, and God will shortly bring it to pass.

wbs@Genesis:41:33 @ Now therefore let Pharaoh look out a man discreet and wise, and set him over the land of Egypt.

wbs@Genesis:41:34 @ Let Pharaoh do this, and let him appoint officers over the land, and take up the fifth part of the land of Egypt in the seven plenteous years.

wbs@Genesis:41:35 @ And let them gather all the food of those good years that come, and lay up corn under the hand of Pharaoh; and let them keep food in the cities.

wbs@Genesis:41:36 @ And that food shall be for store to the land against the seven years of famine, which shall be in the land of Egypt; that the land may not perish through the famine.

wbs@Genesis:41:37 @ And the thing was good in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of all his servants.

wbs@Genesis:41:38 @ And Pharaoh said to his servants, Can we find such a man as this is, a man in whom the spirit of God is?

wbs@Genesis:41:39 @ And Pharaoh said to Joseph, Forasmuch as God hath shown thee all this, there is none so discreet and wise as thou art:

wbs@Genesis:41:40 @ Thou shalt be over my house, and according to thy word shall all my people be ruled: only in the throne will I be greater than thou.

wbs@Genesis:41:41 @ And Pharaoh said to Joseph, See, I have set thee over all the land of Egypt.

wbs@Genesis:41:42 @ And Pharaoh took off his ring from his hand, and put it upon Joseph's hand, and arrayed him in vestures of fine linen, and put a gold chain about his neck;

wbs@Genesis:41:43 @ And he made him to ride in the second chariot which he had: and they cried before him, Bow the knee: and he made him ruler over all the land of Egypt.

wbs@Genesis:41:44 @ And Pharaoh said to Joseph, I am Pharaoh, and without thee shall no man lift up his hand or foot in all the land of Egypt.

wbs@Genesis:41:45 @ And Pharaoh called Joseph's name Zaphnath-paaneah; and he gave him for a wife Asenath the daughter of Poti-pherah priest of On: and Joseph went over all the land of Egypt.

wbs@Genesis:41:46 @ And Joseph was thirty years old when he stood before Pharaoh king of Egypt: and Joseph went out from the presence of Pharaoh, and went throughout all the land of Egypt.

wbs@Genesis:41:47 @ And in the seven plenteous years the earth brought forth by handfulls.

wbs@Genesis:41:48 @ And he gathered all the food of the seven years which were in the land of Egypt, and laid up the food in the cities: the food of the field which was around every city, he laid up in the same.

wbs@Genesis:41:49 @ And Joseph gathered corn as the sand of the sea, very much, until he left numbering; for it was without number.

wbs@Genesis:41:50 @ And to Joseph were born two sons before the years of famine came: which Asenath the daughter of Poti-pherah priest of On bore to him.

wbs@Genesis:41:51 @ And Joseph called the name of the first-born Manasseh: For God, said he, hath made me forget all my toil, and all my father's house.

wbs@Genesis:41:52 @ And the name of the second called he Ephraim: for God hath caused me to be fruitful in the land of my affliction.

wbs@Genesis:41:53 @ And the seven years of plenteousness that was in the land of Egypt, were ended.

wbs@Genesis:41:54 @ And the seven years of dearth began to come, according as Joseph had said: and the dearth was in all lands; but in all the land of Egypt there was bread.

wbs@Genesis:41:55 @ And when all the land of Egypt was famished, the people cried to Pharaoh for bread: and Pharaoh said to all the Egyptians, Go to Joseph; what he saith to you, do.

wbs@Genesis:41:56 @ And the famine was over all the face of the earth; and Joseph opened all the store-houses, and sold to the Egyptians; and the famine became severe in the land of Egypt.

wbs@Genesis:41:57 @ And all countries came into Egypt to Joseph to buy corn; because the famine was distressing in all lands.

wbs@Genesis:42:1 @ Now when Jacob saw that there was corn in Egypt, Jacob said to his sons, Why do ye look one upon another?
