James:1-2
Seeker Overlay ON
*
James ,
a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ ,
to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad ,
greeting (
5721 ).
*
My brethren ,
count it (
5662 )
all joy when ye fall (
5632 )
into divers temptations ;
*
Knowing (
5723 )
this ,
that the trying of your faith worketh (
5736 )
patience .
*
But let patience have (
5720 )
her perfect work ,
that ye may be (
5753 )
perfect and entire ,
wanting (
5746 )
nothing .
*
If any of you lack (
5743 )
wisdom ,
let him ask (
5720 )
of God ,
that giveth (
5723 )
to all men liberally ,
and upbraideth (
5723 )
not ;
and it shall be given (
5701 )
him .
*
But let him ask (
5720 )
in faith ,
nothing wavering (
5734 ).
For he that wavereth (
5734 )
is like (
5758 )
a wave of the sea driven with the wind (
5746 )
and tossed (
5746 ).
*
For let not that man think (
5737 )
that he shall receive (
5695 )
any thing of the Lord .
*
A double minded man is unstable in all his ways .
*
Let the brother of low degree rejoice (
5737 )
in that he is exalted :
*
But the rich ,
in that he is made low :
because as the flower of the grass he shall pass away (
5695 ).
*
For the sun is no sooner risen (
5656 )
with a burning heat ,
but it withereth (
5656 )
the grass ,
and the flower thereof falleth (
5627 ),
and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth (
5639 ):
so also shall the rich man fade away (
5701 )
in his ways .
*
Blessed is the man that endureth (
5719 )
temptation :
for when he is tried (
5637 ),
he shall receive (
5695 )
the crown of life ,
which the Lord hath promised (
5662 )
to them that love (
5723 )
him .
*
Let no man say (
5720 )
when he is tempted (
5746 ),
I am tempted (
5743 )
of God :
for God cannot be tempted (
5748 )
with evil ,
neither tempteth he (
5719 )
any man :
*
But every man is tempted (
5743 ),
when he is drawn away (
5746 )
of his own lust ,
and enticed (
5746 ).
*
Then when lust hath conceived (
5631 ),
it bringeth forth (
5719 )
sin :
and sin ,
when it is finished (
5685 ),
bringeth forth (
5719 )
death .
*
Do not err (
5744 ),
my beloved brethren .
*
Every good gift and every perfect gift is (
5748 )
from above ,
and cometh down (
5723 )
from the Father of lights ,
with whom is (
5748 )
no variableness ,
neither shadow of turning .
*
Of his own will (
5679 )
begat he (
5656 )
us with the word of truth ,
that we should be (
5750 )
a kind of firstfruits of his creatures .
*
Wherefore ,
my beloved brethren ,
let every man be (
5749 )
swift to hear (
5658 ),
slow to speak (
5658 ),
slow to wrath :
*
For the wrath of man worketh (
5736 )
not the righteousness of God .
*
Wherefore lay apart (
5642 )
all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness ,
and receive (
5663 )
with meekness the engrafted word ,
which is able (
5740 )
to save (
5658 )
your souls .
*
But be ye (
5737 )
doers of the word ,
and not hearers only ,
deceiving (
5740 )
your own selves .
*
For if any be (
5748 )
a hearer of the word ,
and not a doer ,
he is like (
5758 )
unto a man beholding (
5723 )
his natural face in a glass :
*
For he beholdeth (
5656 )
himself ,
and goeth his way (
5754 ),
and straightway forgetteth (
5633 )
what manner of man he was (
5713 ).
*
But whoso looketh (
5660 )
into the perfect law of liberty ,
and continueth (
5660 )
therein ,
he being (
5637 )
not a forgetful hearer ,
but a doer of the work ,
this man shall be (
5704 )
blessed in his deed .
*
If any man among you seem (
5719 )
to be (
5750 )
religious ,
and bridleth (
5723 )
not his tongue ,
but deceiveth (
5723 )
his own heart ,
this mans religion is vain .
*
Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is (
5748 )
this ,
To visit (
5738 )
the fatherless and widows in their affliction ,
and to keep (
5721 )
himself unspotted from the world .
*
My brethren ,
have (
5720 )
not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ ,
the Lord of glory ,
with respect of persons .
*
For if there come (
5632 )
unto your assembly a man with a gold ring ,
in goodly apparel ,
and there come in (
5632 )
also a poor man in vile raiment ;
*
And ye have respect (
5661 )
to him that weareth (
5723 )
the gay clothing ,
and say (
5632 )
unto him ,
Sit (
5737 )
thou here in a good place ;
and say (
5632 )
to the poor ,
Stand (
5628 )
thou there ,
or sit (
5737 )
here under my footstool :
*
Are ye not then partial (
5681 )
in yourselves ,
and are become (
5633 )
judges of evil thoughts ?
*
Hearken (
5657 ),
my beloved brethren ,
Hath not God chosen (
5668 )
the poor of this world rich in faith ,
and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised (
5662 )
to them that love (
5723 )
him ?
*
But ye have despised (
5656 )
the poor .
Do not rich men oppress (
5719 )
you ,
and draw (
5719 )
you before the judgment seats ?
*
Do not they blaspheme (
5719 )
that worthy name by the which ye are called (
5685 )?
*
If ye fulfil (
5719 )
the royal law according to the scripture ,
Thou shalt love (
5692 )
thy neighbour as thyself ,
ye do (
5719 )
well :
*
But if ye have respect to persons (
5719 ),
ye commit (
5736 )
sin ,
and are convinced (
5746 )
of the law as transgressors .
*
For whosoever shall keep (
5692 )
the whole law ,
and yet offend (
5692 )
in one point ,
he is (
5754 )
guilty of all .
*
For he that said (
5631 ),
Do not commit adultery (
5661 ),
said (
5627 )
also ,
Do not kill (
5661 ).
Now if thou commit no adultery (
5692 ),
yet if thou kill (
5692 ),
thou art become (
5754 )
a transgressor of the law .
*
So speak ye (
5720 ),
and so do (
5720 ),
as they that shall be (
5723 )
judged (
5745 )
by the law of liberty .
*
For he shall have judgment without mercy ,
that hath shewed (
5660 )
no mercy ;
and mercy rejoiceth against (
5736 )
judgment .
*
What doth it profit ,
my brethren ,
though a man say (
5725 )
he hath (
5721 )
faith ,
and have (
5725 )
not works ?
can (
5736 )
faith save (
5658 )
him ?
*
If a brother or sister be (
5725 )
naked ,
and destitute (
5746 ) (
5753 )
of daily food ,
*
And one of you say (
5632 )
unto them ,
Depart (
5720 )
in peace ,
be ye warmed (
5728 )
and filled (
5744 );
notwithstanding ye give (
5632 )
them not those things which are needful to the body ;
what doth it profit ?
*
Even so faith ,
if it hath (
5725 )
not works ,
is (
5748 )
dead ,
being alone .
*
Yea ,
a man may say (
5692 ),
Thou hast (
5719 )
faith ,
and I have (
5719 )
works :
shew (
5657 )
me thy faith without thy works ,
and I will shew (
5692 )
thee my faith by my works .
*
Thou believest (
5719 )
that there is (
5748 )
one God ;
thou doest (
5719 )
well :
the devils also believe (
5719 ),
and tremble (
5719 ).
*
But wilt (
5719 )
thou know (
5629 ),
O vain man ,
that faith without works is (
5748 )
dead ?
*
Was not Abraham our father justified (
5681 )
by works ,
when he had offered (
5660 )
Isaac his son upon the altar ?
*
Seest thou (
5719 )
how faith wrought (
5707 )
with his works ,
and by works was faith made perfect (
5681 )?
*
And the scripture was fulfilled (
5681 )
which saith (
5723 ),
Abraham believed (
5656 )
God ,
and it was imputed (
5681 )
unto him for righteousness :
and he was called (
5681 )
the Friend of God .
*
Ye see (
5719 )
then how that by works a man is justified (
5743 ),
and not by faith only .
*
Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified (
5681 )
by works ,
when she had received (
5666 )
the messengers ,
and had sent them out (
5631 )
another way ?
*
For as the body without the spirit is (
5748 )
dead ,
so faith without works is (
5748 )
dead also .
*
My brethren ,
be (
5737 )
not many masters ,
knowing (
5761 )
that we shall receive (
5695 )
the greater condemnation .
