* James , a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ , to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad , greeting (5721 ). * My brethren , count it (5662 ) all joy when ye fall (5632 ) into divers temptations ; * Knowing (5723 ) this , that the trying of your faith worketh (5736 ) patience . * But let patience have (5720 ) her perfect work , that ye may be (5753 ) perfect and entire , wanting (5746 ) nothing . * If any of you lack (5743 ) wisdom , let him ask (5720 ) of God , that giveth (5723 ) to all men liberally , and upbraideth (5723 ) not ; and it shall be given (5701 ) him . * But let him ask (5720 ) in faith , nothing wavering (5734 ). For he that wavereth (5734 ) is like (5758 ) a wave of the sea driven with the wind (5746 ) and tossed (5746 ). * For let not that man think (5737 ) that he shall receive (5695 ) any thing of the Lord . * A double minded man is unstable in all his ways . * Let the brother of low degree rejoice (5737 ) in that he is exalted : * But the rich , in that he is made low : because as the flower of the grass he shall pass away (5695 ). * For the sun is no sooner risen (5656 ) with a burning heat , but it withereth (5656 ) the grass , and the flower thereof falleth (5627 ), and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth (5639 ): so also shall the rich man fade away (5701 ) in his ways . * Blessed is the man that endureth (5719 ) temptation : for when he is tried (5637 ), he shall receive (5695 ) the crown of life , which the Lord hath promised (5662 ) to them that love (5723 ) him . * Let no man say (5720 ) when he is tempted (5746 ), I am tempted (5743 ) of God : for God cannot be tempted (5748 ) with evil , neither tempteth he (5719 ) any man : * But every man is tempted (5743 ), when he is drawn away (5746 ) of his own lust , and enticed (5746 ). * Then when lust hath conceived (5631 ), it bringeth forth (5719 ) sin : and sin , when it is finished (5685 ), bringeth forth (5719 ) death . * Do not err (5744 ), my beloved brethren . * Every good gift and every perfect gift is (5748 ) from above , and cometh down (5723 ) from the Father of lights , with whom is (5748 ) no variableness , neither shadow of turning . * Of his own will (5679 ) begat he (5656 ) us with the word of truth , that we should be (5750 ) a kind of firstfruits of his creatures . * Wherefore , my beloved brethren , let every man be (5749 ) swift to hear (5658 ), slow to speak (5658 ), slow to wrath : * For the wrath of man worketh (5736 ) not the righteousness of God . * Wherefore lay apart (5642 ) all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness , and receive (5663 ) with meekness the engrafted word , which is able (5740 ) to save (5658 ) your souls . * But be ye (5737 ) doers of the word , and not hearers only , deceiving (5740 ) your own selves . * For if any be (5748 ) a hearer of the word , and not a doer , he is like (5758 ) unto a man beholding (5723 ) his natural face in a glass : * For he beholdeth (5656 ) himself , and goeth his way (5754 ), and straightway forgetteth (5633 ) what manner of man he was (5713 ). * But whoso looketh (5660 ) into the perfect law of liberty , and continueth (5660 ) therein , he being (5637 ) not a forgetful hearer , but a doer of the work , this man shall be (5704 ) blessed in his deed . * If any man among you seem (5719 ) to be (5750 ) religious , and bridleth (5723 ) not his tongue , but deceiveth (5723 ) his own heart , this mans religion is vain . * Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is (5748 ) this , To visit (5738 ) the fatherless and widows in their affliction , and to keep (5721 ) himself unspotted from the world . * My brethren , have (5720 ) not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ , the Lord of glory , with respect of persons . * For if there come (5632 ) unto your assembly a man with a gold ring , in goodly apparel , and there come in (5632 ) also a poor man in vile raiment ; * And ye have respect (5661 ) to him that weareth (5723 ) the gay clothing , and say (5632 ) unto him , Sit (5737 ) thou here in a good place ; and say (5632 ) to the poor , Stand (5628 ) thou there , or sit (5737 ) here under my footstool : * Are ye not then partial (5681 ) in yourselves , and are become (5633 ) judges of evil thoughts ? * Hearken (5657 ), my beloved brethren , Hath not God chosen (5668 ) the poor of this world rich in faith , and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised (5662 ) to them that love (5723 ) him ? * But ye have despised (5656 ) the poor . Do not rich men oppress (5719 ) you , and draw (5719 ) you before the judgment seats ? * Do not they blaspheme (5719 ) that worthy name by the which ye are called (5685 )? * If ye fulfil (5719 ) the royal law according to the scripture , Thou shalt love (5692 ) thy neighbour as thyself , ye do (5719 ) well : * But if ye have respect to persons (5719 ), ye commit (5736 ) sin , and are convinced (5746 ) of the law as transgressors . * For whosoever shall keep (5692 ) the whole law , and yet offend (5692 ) in one point , he is (5754 ) guilty of all . * For he that said (5631 ), Do not commit adultery (5661 ), said (5627 ) also , Do not kill (5661 ). Now if thou commit no adultery (5692 ), yet if thou kill (5692 ), thou art become (5754 ) a transgressor of the law . * So speak ye (5720 ), and so do (5720 ), as they that shall be (5723 ) judged (5745 ) by the law of liberty . * For he shall have judgment without mercy , that hath shewed (5660 ) no mercy ; and mercy rejoiceth against (5736 ) judgment . * What doth it profit , my brethren , though a man say (5725 ) he hath (5721 ) faith , and have (5725 ) not works ? can (5736 ) faith save (5658 ) him ? * If a brother or sister be (5725 ) naked , and destitute (5746 ) (5753 ) of daily food , * And one of you say (5632 ) unto them , Depart (5720 ) in peace , be ye warmed (5728 ) and filled (5744 ); notwithstanding ye give (5632 ) them not those things which are needful to the body ; what doth it profit ? * Even so faith , if it hath (5725 ) not works , is (5748 ) dead , being alone . * Yea , a man may say (5692 ), Thou hast (5719 ) faith , and I have (5719 ) works : shew (5657 ) me thy faith without thy works , and I will shew (5692 ) thee my faith by my works . * Thou believest (5719 ) that there is (5748 ) one God ; thou doest (5719 ) well : the devils also believe (5719 ), and tremble (5719 ). * But wilt (5719 ) thou know (5629 ), O vain man , that faith without works is (5748 ) dead ? * Was not Abraham our father justified (5681 ) by works , when he had offered (5660 ) Isaac his son upon the altar ? * Seest thou (5719 ) how faith wrought (5707 ) with his works , and by works was faith made perfect (5681 )? * And the scripture was fulfilled (5681 ) which saith (5723 ), Abraham believed (5656 ) God , and it was imputed (5681 ) unto him for righteousness : and he was called (5681 ) the Friend of God . * Ye see (5719 ) then how that by works a man is justified (5743 ), and not by faith only . * Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified (5681 ) by works , when she had received (5666 ) the messengers , and had sent them out (5631 ) another way ? * For as the body without the spirit is (5748 ) dead , so faith without works is (5748 ) dead also . * My brethren , be (5737 ) not many masters , knowing (5761 ) that we shall receive (5695 ) the greater condemnation . * For in many things we offend (5719 ) all . If any man offend (5719 ) not in word , the same is a perfect man , and able also to bridle (5658 ) the whole body . * Behold (5628 ), we put (5719 ) bits in the horses mouths , that they may obey (5745 ) us ; and we turn about (5719 ) their whole body . * Behold (5628 ) also the ships , which though they be (5752 ) so great , and are driven (5746 ) of fierce winds , yet are they turned about (5743 ) with a very small helm , whithersoever the governor (5723 ) listeth (5741 ). * Even so the tongue is (5748 ) a little member , and boasteth great things (5719 ). Behold (5628 ), how great a matter a little fire kindleth (5719 )! * And the tongue is a fire , a world of iniquity : so is (5743 ) the tongue among our members , that it defileth (5723 ) the whole body , and setteth on fire (5723 ) the course of nature ; and it is set on fire (5746 ) of hell . * For every kind of beasts , and of birds , and of serpents , and of things in the sea , is tamed (5743 ), and hath been tamed (5769 ) of mankind : * But the tongue can (5736 ) no man tame (5658 ); it is an unruly evil , full of deadly poison . * Therewith bless we (5719 ) God , even the Father ; and therewith curse we (5736 ) men , which are made (5756 ) after the similitude of God . * Out of the same mouth proceedeth (5736 ) blessing and cursing . My brethren , these things ought (5724 ) not so to be (5738 ). * Doth a fountain send forth (5719 ) at the same place sweet water and bitter ? * Can (5736 ) the fig tree , my brethren , bear (5658 ) olive berries ? either a vine , figs ? so can no fountain both yield (5658 ) salt water and fresh . * Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you ? let him shew (5657 ) out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom . * But if ye have (5719 ) bitter envying and strife in your hearts , glory (5737 ) not , and lie not (5732 ) against the truth . * This wisdom descendeth (5748 ) (5740 ) not from above , but is earthly , sensual , devilish . * For where envying and strife is , there is confusion and every evil work . * But the wisdom that is from above is (5748 ) first pure , then peaceable , gentle , and easy to be intreated , full of mercy and good fruits , without partiality , and without hypocrisy . * And the fruit of righteousness is sown (5743 ) in peace of them that make (5723 ) peace . * From whence come wars and fightings among you ? come they not hence , even of your lusts that war (5734 ) in your members ? * Ye lust (5719 ), and have (5719 ) not : ye kill (5719 ), and desire to have (5719 ), and cannot (5736 ) obtain (5629 ): ye fight (5736 ) and war (5719 ), yet ye have (5719 ) not , because ye ask (5733 ) not . * Ye ask (5719 ), and receive (5719 ) not , because ye ask (5731 ) amiss , that ye may consume (5661 ) it upon your lusts . * Ye adulterers and adulteresses , know ye (5758 ) not that the friendship of the world is (5748 ) enmity with God ? whosoever therefore will be (5750 ) (5680 ) a friend of the world is (5743 ) the enemy of God . * Do ye think (5719 ) that the scripture saith (5719 ) in vain , The spirit that dwelleth (5656 ) in us lusteth (5719 ) to envy ? * But he giveth (5719 ) more grace . Wherefore he saith (5719 ), God resisteth (5731 ) the proud , but giveth (5719 ) grace unto the humble . * Submit yourselves (5649 ) therefore to God . Resist (5628 ) the devil , and he will flee (5695 ) from you . * Draw nigh (5657 ) to God , and he will draw nigh (5692 ) to you . Cleanse (5657 ) your hands , ye sinners ; and purify (5657 ) your hearts , ye double minded . * Be afflicted (5657 ), and mourn (5657 ), and weep (5657 ): let your laughter be turned (5649 ) to mourning , and your joy to heaviness . * Humble yourselves (5682 ) in the sight of the Lord , and he shall lift you up (5692 ). * Speak not evil (5720 ) one of another , brethren . He that speaketh evil (5723 ) of his brother , and judgeth (5723 ) his brother , speaketh evil (5719 ) of the law , and judgeth (5719 ) the law : but if thou judge (5719 ) the law , thou art (5748 ) not a doer of the law , but a judge . * There is (5748 ) one lawgiver , who is able (5740 ) to save (5658 ) and to destroy (5658 ): who art (5748 ) thou that judgest (5719 ) another ? * Go to (5720 ) now , ye that say (5723 ), To day or to morrow we will go (5667 ) into such a city , and continue (5661 ) (5625 ) (5692 ) there a year , and buy and sell (5667 ) (5625 ) (5695 ), and get gain (5661 ) (5625 ) (5692 ): * Whereas ye know (5736 ) not what shall be on the morrow . For what is your life ? It is (5748 ) even a vapour , that appeareth for (5730 ) a little time , and then vanisheth away (5746 ). * For that ye ought to say (5721 ), If the Lord will (5661 ), we shall live (5661 ) (5625 ) (5692 ), and do (5661 ) (5625 ) (5692 ) this , or that . * But now ye rejoice (5736 ) in your boastings : all such rejoicing is (5748 ) evil . * Therefore to him that knoweth (5761 ) to do (5721 ) good , and doeth (5723 ) it not , to him it is (5748 ) sin . * Go to (5720 ) now , ye rich men , weep (5657 ) and howl (5723 ) for your miseries that shall come upon (5740 ) you . * Your riches are corrupted (5754 ), and your garments are (5754 ) motheaten . * Your gold and silver is cankered (5769 ); and the rust of them shall be (5704 ) a witness against you , and shall eat (5695 ) your flesh as it were fire . Ye have heaped treasure together (5656 ) for the last days . * Behold (5628 ), the hire of the labourers who have reaped down (5660 ) your fields , which is of you kept back by fraud (5772 ), crieth (5719 ): and the cries of them which have reaped (5660 ) are entered (5754 ) into the ears of the Lord of sabaoth . * Ye have lived in pleasure (5656 ) on the earth , and been wanton (5656 ); ye have nourished (5656 ) your hearts , as in a day of slaughter . * Ye have condemned (5656 ) and killed (5656 ) the just ; and he doth not resist (5731 ) you . * Be patient (5657 ) therefore , brethren , unto the coming of the Lord . Behold (5628 ), the husbandman waiteth (5736 ) for the precious fruit of the earth , and hath long patience (5723 ) for it , until he receive (5632 ) the early and latter rain . * Be ye also patient (5657 ); stablish (5657 ) your hearts : for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh (5758 ). * Grudge (5720 ) not one against another , brethren , lest ye be condemned (5686 ): behold (5628 ), the judge standeth (5707 ) before the door . * Take (5628 ), my brethren , the prophets , who have spoken (5656 ) in the name of the Lord , for an example of suffering affliction , and of patience . * Behold (5628 ), we count them happy (5719 ) which endure (5723 ). Ye have heard (5656 ) of the patience of Job , and have seen (5627 ) the end of the Lord ; that the Lord is (5748 ) very pitiful , and of tender mercy . * But above all things , my brethren , swear (5720 ) not , neither by heaven , neither by the earth , neither by any other oath : but let your yea be (5749 ) yea ; and your nay , nay ; lest ye fall (5632 ) into condemnation . * Is any among you afflicted (5719 )? let him pray (5737 ). Is any merry (5719 )? let him sing psalms (5720 ). * Is any sick (5719 ) among you ? let him call (5663 ) for the elders of the church ; and let them pray (5663 ) over him , anointing (5660 ) him with oil in the name of the Lord : * And the prayer of faith shall save (5692 ) the sick (5723 ), and the Lord shall raise him up (5692 ); and if he have (5753 ) committed (5761 ) sins , they shall be forgiven (5701 ) him . * Confess (5732 ) your faults one to another , and pray (5737 ) one for another , that ye may be healed (5686 ). The effectual fervent (5734 ) prayer of a righteous man availeth (5719 ) much . * Elias was (5713 ) a man subject to like passions as we are , and he prayed (5662 ) earnestly that it might not rain (5658 ): and it rained (5656 ) not on the earth by the space of three years and six months . * And he prayed (5662 ) again , and the heaven gave (5656 ) rain , and the earth brought forth (5656 ) her fruit . * Brethren , if any of you do err (5686 ) from the truth , and one convert (5661 ) him ; * Let him know (5720 ), that he which converteth (5660 ) the sinner from the error of his way shall save (5692 ) a soul from death , and shall hide (5692 ) a multitude of sins . * Jude , the servant of Jesus Christ , and brother of James , to them that are sanctified (5772 ) by God the Father , and preserved (5772 ) in Jesus Christ , and called :
