Jeremiah:36-40

vw@Jeremiah:36:1 @ And it came to pass in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, that this Word came unto Jeremiah from Jehovah, saying,

vw@Jeremiah:36:2 @ Take for yourself a scroll of a book, and write in it all the Words that I have spoken to you against Israel, and against Judah, and against all the nations, from the day I spoke to you, from the days of Josiah, even to this day.

vw@Jeremiah:36:3 @ It may be that the house of Judah will hear all the evil which I plan to do to them, that they may turn, each man, from his evil way, so that I may forgive their iniquity and their sin.

vw@Jeremiah:36:4 @ Then Jeremiah called Baruch the son of Neriah. And Baruch wrote from the mouth of Jeremiah all the Words of Jehovah, which He had spoken to him, on a scroll of a book.

vw@Jeremiah:36:5 @ And Jeremiah commanded Baruch, saying, I am confined. I cannot go into the house of Jehovah.

vw@Jeremiah:36:6 @ Therefore you go, and read from the scroll which you have written at my mouth, the Words of Jehovah in the ears of the people in Jehovah’s house on the day of the fast. And also you shall read them in the ears of all Judah who come out of their cities.

vw@Jeremiah:36:7 @ It may be that they will present their supplication before Jehovah, and will turn back, each one from his evil way. For great is the anger and the fury that Jehovah has pronounced against this people.

vw@Jeremiah:36:8 @ And Baruch the son of Neriah did according to all that Jeremiah the prophet commanded him, reading from the book, the Words of Jehovah in the house of Jehovah.

vw@Jeremiah:36:9 @ And it came to pass in the fifth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, in the ninth month, that they proclaimed a fast before Jehovah to all the people in Jerusalem, and to all the people who came from the cities of Judah to Jerusalem.

vw@Jeremiah:36:10 @ And Baruch read from the book the words of Jeremiah in the house of Jehovah, in the room of Gemariah the son of Shaphan the scribe, in the higher court, at the entrance to the New Gate of the house of Jehovah, in the ears of all the people.

vw@Jeremiah:36:11 @ When Michaiah, the son of Gemariah, the son of Shaphan, heard all the Words of Jehovah from the book,

vw@Jeremiah:36:12 @ he then went down to the king’s house, into the scribe’s room. And, lo, all the rulers sat there, even Elishama the scribe, and Delaiah the son of Shemaiah, and Elnathan the son of Achbor, and Gemariah the son of Shaphan, and Zedekiah the son of Hananiah, and all the rulers.

vw@Jeremiah:36:13 @ Then Michaiah declared to them all the words that he had heard when Baruch read the book in the ears of the people.

vw@Jeremiah:36:14 @ Therefore all the rulers sent Jehudi the son of Nethaniah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Cushi, to Baruch, saying, Take the scroll in your hand from which you have read in the ears of the people, and come. So Baruch the son of Neriah took the scroll in his hand and came to them.

vw@Jeremiah:36:15 @ And they said to him, Sit down now, and read it in our ears. So Baruch read it in their ears.

vw@Jeremiah:36:16 @ And it happened when they had heard all the words, that they turned to one another in fear and said to Baruch, We will surely tell the king of all these words.

vw@Jeremiah:36:17 @ And they asked Baruch, saying, Tell us now, How did you write all these words at his mouth?

vw@Jeremiah:36:18 @ Then Baruch answered them, He spoke all these words to me with his mouth, and I wrote them with ink in the book.

vw@Jeremiah:36:19 @ And the rulers said to Baruch, Go hide yourselves, you and Jeremiah; and let no man know where you are.

vw@Jeremiah:36:20 @ And they went in to the king, into the court. But they laid up the scroll in the room of Elishama the scribe, and told all the words in the ears of the king.

vw@Jeremiah:36:21 @ So the king sent Jehudi to bring the scroll. And he took it out of the room of Elishama the scribe. And Jehudi read it in the ears of the king, and in the ears of all the rulers who stood beside the king.

vw@Jeremiah:36:22 @ And the king was sitting in the winter house in the ninth month, the fire burning in the hearth before him.

vw@Jeremiah:36:23 @ And it happened, when Jehudi had read three or four leaves, that he cut it with the scribe’s knife and threw it into the fire in the hearth, until all the scroll was burned up in the hearth.

vw@Jeremiah:36:24 @ Yet the king and all his servants who heard these words were not afraid, nor did they tear their garments.

vw@Jeremiah:36:25 @ But Elnathan and Delaiah and Gemariah had entreated the king that he should not burn the scroll, but he would not consent to them.

vw@Jeremiah:36:26 @ And the king commanded Jerahmeel the son of Hammelech, and Seraiah the son of Azriel, and Shelemiah the son of Abdeel, to seize Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the prophet. But Jehovah hid them.

vw@Jeremiah:36:27 @ Then the Word of Jehovah came unto Jeremiah, after the king had burned the scroll and the words which Baruch had written at the mouth of Jeremiah, saying,

vw@Jeremiah:36:28 @ Take for yourself another scroll, and write in it all the former Words that were in the first scroll, which Jehoiakim the king of Judah has burned.

vw@Jeremiah:36:29 @ And you shall say to Jehoiakim king of Judah, Thus says Jehovah: You have burned this scroll, saying, Why have you written in it, saying that the king of Babylon shall certainly come and destroy this land, and shall cause man and beast to be annihilated from there?

vw@Jeremiah:36:30 @ Therefore thus says Jehovah concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah: He shall have no one to sit on the throne of David. And his dead body shall be cast out into the heat of the day, and the frost of the night.

vw@Jeremiah:36:31 @ And I will punish him and his seed and his servants for their iniquity. And I will bring upon them, and upon the people of Jerusalem, and upon the men of Judah, all the evil that I have spoken against them; but they have not given heed.

vw@Jeremiah:36:32 @ Then Jeremiah took another scroll and gave it to Baruch the scribe, the son of Neriah, who wrote in it at the mouth of Jeremiah all the Words of the book which Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned in the fire. And many words like them were added to them.

vw@Jeremiah:37:1 @ And King Zedekiah the son of Josiah reigned instead of Coniah the son of Jehoiakim, whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had made king in the land of Judah.

vw@Jeremiah:37:2 @ But neither he, nor his servants, nor the people of the land, gave heed to the Words of Jehovah which He spoke by the hand of the prophet Jeremiah.

vw@Jeremiah:37:3 @ And Zedekiah the king sent Jehucal the son of Shelemiah and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest to the prophet Jeremiah, saying, Pray now to Jehovah our God for us.

vw@Jeremiah:37:4 @ And Jeremiah came in and went out among the people, for they had not yet put him into prison.

vw@Jeremiah:37:5 @ And Pharaoh’s army had come out from Egypt. And when the Chaldeans who were besieging Jerusalem heard news of them, they departed from Jerusalem.

vw@Jeremiah:37:6 @ Then the Word of Jehovah came unto the prophet Jeremiah, saying,

vw@Jeremiah:37:7 @ Thus says Jehovah the God of Israel: You shall say this to the king of Judah, who sent you to Me to inquire of Me: Behold, Pharaoh’s army, which has come forth to help you, shall return to Egypt into their own land.

vw@Jeremiah:37:8 @ And the Chaldeans shall come back and fight against this city, and capture it, and burn it with fire.

vw@Jeremiah:37:9 @ Thus says Jehovah: Do not deceive yourselves, saying, The Chaldeans shall surely depart from us. For they shall not depart.

vw@Jeremiah:37:10 @ For though you had smitten the whole army of the Chaldeans who fight against you, and there remained only wounded men among them, they would rise up, each man in his tent, and burn this city with fire.

vw@Jeremiah:37:11 @ And it happened when the army of Chaldeans went up from Jerusalem because of Pharaoh’s army,

vw@Jeremiah:37:12 @ that Jeremiah went out of Jerusalem to go into the land of Benjamin, to claim his property there in the midst of the people.

vw@Jeremiah:37:13 @ And when he was in the gate of Benjamin, a commander of the guard named Irijah was there, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah. And he seized Jeremiah the prophet, saying, You are defecting to the Chaldeans.

vw@Jeremiah:37:14 @ Then Jeremiah said, False! I am not defecting to the Chaldeans. But he did not listen to him; so Irijah arrested Jeremiah and brought him to the rulers.

vw@Jeremiah:37:15 @ And the rulers were angry with Jeremiah, and struck him, and put him in prison, the house of Jonathan the scribe. For they had made that the prison.

vw@Jeremiah:37:16 @ When Jeremiah had entered into the dungeon and the cell, and Jeremiah had remained there many days,

vw@Jeremiah:37:17 @ then Zedekiah the king sent and took him out. And the king asked him secretly in his house, and said, Is there any Word from Jehovah? And Jeremiah said, There is. For, He said, you shall be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon.

vw@Jeremiah:37:18 @ Moreover Jeremiah said to King Zedekiah, What have I offended against you, or against your servants, or against this people, that you have put me in prison?

vw@Jeremiah:37:19 @ Where now are your prophets who prophesied to you, saying, The king of Babylon shall not come against you nor against this land?

vw@Jeremiah:37:20 @ Therefore please hear now, O my lord the king; I beg you, let my supplication fall before you, so that you not cause me to return to the house of Jonathan the scribe, lest I die there.

vw@Jeremiah:37:21 @ And Zedekiah the king commanded that they should put Jeremiah into the court of the guard, and that they should give him a piece of bread out of the bakers’ street daily, until all the bread in the city was gone. Thus, Jeremiah remained in the court of the guard.

vw@Jeremiah:38:1 @ And Shephatiah the son of Mattan, and Gedaliah the son of Pashur, and Jucal the son of Shelemiah, and Pashur the son of Malchijah, heard the words that Jeremiah had spoken to all the people, saying,

vw@Jeremiah:38:2 @ Thus says Jehovah, He who remains in this city shall die by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence. But he who goes out to the Chaldeans shall live; for he shall have his life as a prize, and shall live.

vw@Jeremiah:38:3 @ Thus says Jehovah: This city shall be given and bestowed into the hand of the army of the king of Babylon, and he shall seize it.

vw@Jeremiah:38:4 @ Therefore the rulers said to the king, Please let this man be put to death. For in this way he weakens the hands of the men of war who remain in this city, and the hands of all the people, by speaking such words to them. For this man does not seek the welfare of this people, but their harm.

vw@Jeremiah:38:5 @ Then Zedekiah the king said, Behold, he is in your hand. For the king cannot do a thing against you.

vw@Jeremiah:38:6 @ And they took Jeremiah and threw him into the pit of Malchijah the son of Hammelech, which was in the court of the guard. And they let Jeremiah down with ropes. And there was no water in the pit, only mud. So Jeremiah sank into the mud.

vw@Jeremiah:38:7 @ And when Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, one of the officials in the king’s house, heard that they had put Jeremiah in the pit (the king was then sitting in the gate of Benjamin),

vw@Jeremiah:38:8 @ Ebed-melech went out of the king’s house and spoke to the king, saying,

vw@Jeremiah:38:9 @ My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet, whom they have thrown into the pit. And he is likely to die of hunger in the place where he is, for there is no more bread in the city.

vw@Jeremiah:38:10 @ Then the king commanded Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, saying, Take by your hand thirty men from here, and lift Jeremiah the prophet up out of the pit before he dies.

vw@Jeremiah:38:11 @ So Ebed-melech took the men by his hand and went into the house of the king under the treasury, and took worn out clothes and worn out rags from there, and let them down by ropes into the pit to Jeremiah.

vw@Jeremiah:38:12 @ And Ebed-melech the Ethiopian said to Jeremiah, Now put the worn out clothes and rags under your armpits, under the ropes. And Jeremiah did so.

vw@Jeremiah:38:13 @ So they drew up Jeremiah with ropes and took him up out of the pit. And Jeremiah remained in the court of the guard.

vw@Jeremiah:38:14 @ And Zedekiah the king sent and had Jeremiah the prophet brought to him at the third gate of the house of Jehovah. And the king said to Jeremiah, I will ask you something. Do not hide anything from me.

vw@Jeremiah:38:15 @ Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, If I declare it to you, will you not execute me to death? And if I give you advice, you will not give heed to me.

vw@Jeremiah:38:16 @ So Zedekiah the king swore secretly to Jeremiah, saying, As Jehovah lives, who made our souls, I will not put you to death, nor will I give you into the hand of these men who seek your life.

vw@Jeremiah:38:17 @ Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, Thus says Jehovah the God of Hosts, the God of Israel: If you will come out and go forth to the rulers of the king of Babylon, then your soul shall live, and this city shall not be burned with fire. And you and your house shall live.

vw@Jeremiah:38:18 @ But if you will not go forth to the rulers of the king of Babylon, then this city shall be given into the hands of the Chaldeans, and they shall burn it with fire, and you shall not escape out of their hand.

vw@Jeremiah:38:19 @ And Zedekiah the king said to Jeremiah, I am afraid of the Jews who have defected to the Chaldeans, lest they deliver me into their hand, and they abuse me.

vw@Jeremiah:38:20 @ But Jeremiah said, They shall not deliver you. I beg of you, obey the voice of Jehovah which I am speaking to you; so it shall be well with you, and your soul shall live.

vw@Jeremiah:38:21 @ But if you refuse to surrender, this is the Word that Jehovah has shown me:

vw@Jeremiah:38:22 @ Behold, all the women who are left in the house of the king of Judah shall be brought out to the rulers of the king of Babylon, and they shall say, Your friends have enticed you, and have prevailed against you. Your feet have sunk in the mire, and they have turned away.

vw@Jeremiah:38:23 @ So they shall bring out all your wives and your children to the Chaldeans. And you shall not escape out of their hand, but shall be taken by the hand of the king of Babylon. And this city shall be burned with fire.

vw@Jeremiah:38:24 @ Then Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, Let no man know of these words, and you shall not die.

vw@Jeremiah:38:25 @ But if the rulers hear that I have talked with you, and they come to you and say to you, Declare to us now what you have said to the king, and what the king said to you; do not hide it from us, and we will not put you to death;

vw@Jeremiah:38:26 @ then you shall say to them, I presented my supplication before the king, that he would not cause me to return to Jonathan’s house, to die there.

vw@Jeremiah:38:27 @ Then all the rulers came to Jeremiah and asked him. And he told them according to all these words that the king had commanded. So they quit speaking with him; for the conversation had not been heard.

vw@Jeremiah:38:28 @ So Jeremiah stayed in the court of the guard until the day that Jerusalem was captured. And he was there when Jerusalem was captured.

vw@Jeremiah:39:1 @ In the ninth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, in the tenth month, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and all his army came against Jerusalem, and besieged it.

vw@Jeremiah:39:2 @ In the eleventh year of Zedekiah, in the fourth month, the ninth of the month, the city was broken into.

vw@Jeremiah:39:3 @ And all the rulers of the king of Babylon came in and sat in the middle gate: Nergal-sharezer, Samgar-nebo, Sarsechim, Rabsaris, Nergal-sharezer, Rabmag, and all the rest of the rulers of the king of Babylon.

vw@Jeremiah:39:4 @ And it came to pass that when Zedekiah the king of Judah and all the men of war saw them, then they fled, and went out from the city by night, by the way of the king’s garden, by the gate between the two walls. And he went out the way of the plain.

vw@Jeremiah:39:5 @ But the Chaldean army pursued them and overtook Zedekiah in the plains of Jericho. And they took him, and brought him to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, to Riblah in the land of Hamath, where he pronounced judgment upon him.

vw@Jeremiah:39:6 @ Then the king of Babylon killed the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes in Riblah. The king of Babylon also killed all the nobles of Judah.

vw@Jeremiah:39:7 @ Moreover he put out Zedekiah’s eyes and bound him with chains, to bring him to Babylon.

vw@Jeremiah:39:8 @ And the Chaldeans burned the king’s house and the houses of the people, with fire, and broke down the walls of Jerusalem.

vw@Jeremiah:39:9 @ Then Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard carried away captive to Babylon the rest of the people who remained in the city, and those who fell out and defected to him, with the rest of the people that remained.

vw@Jeremiah:39:10 @ But Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard left some of the poor people, who had nothing, in the land of Judah, and gave them vineyards and fields at the same time.

vw@Jeremiah:39:11 @ And Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon gave charge concerning Jeremiah to Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard, saying,

vw@Jeremiah:39:12 @ Take him and look after him, and do him no evil; but do with him even as he says to you.

vw@Jeremiah:39:13 @ So Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard, sent, and Nebushasban, Rabsaris, and Nergal-sharezer, Rabmag, and all the princes of the king of Babylon,

vw@Jeremiah:39:14 @ even they sent and took Jeremiah out of the court of the guard, and assigned him to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan, to take him home. So he lived among the people.

vw@Jeremiah:39:15 @ Now the Word of Jehovah came unto Jeremiah, while he was shut up in the court of the guard, saying,

vw@Jeremiah:39:16 @ Go and speak to Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, saying, Thus says Jehovah of Hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I will bring My Words upon this city for evil and not for good. And they shall be done in that day before you.

vw@Jeremiah:39:17 @ But I will deliver you in that day, says Jehovah. And you shall not be given into the hand of the men of whom you are afraid.

vw@Jeremiah:39:18 @ For I will give you an escape, to deliver you, and you shall not fall by the sword, but your life shall be as a prize to you, because you have put your trust in Me, says Jehovah.

vw@Jeremiah:40:1 @ This is the Word that came unto Jeremiah from Jehovah, after Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had set him free from Ramah, when he had taken him, being bound in chains, from among all the captives of Jerusalem and Judah, who were being carried away captive to Babylon.

vw@Jeremiah:40:2 @ And the captain of the guard took Jeremiah and said to him, Jehovah your God has pronounced this evil against this place.

vw@Jeremiah:40:3 @ Now Jehovah has brought it, and has done according as He has said. Because you have sinned against Jehovah and have not obeyed His voice, therefore this thing has come upon you.

vw@Jeremiah:40:4 @ And now, behold, I have set you free today from the chains on your hand. If it seems agreeable to you to come with me to Babylon, come; and I will see to your settlement. But if it is displeasing in your eyes to come with me into Babylon, stay. Behold, all the land is before you. Wherever it seems agreeable and right for you to go, go there.

vw@Jeremiah:40:5 @ And while he had not yet gone back, he said, Go back also to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon has made governor over the cities of Judah, and live with him among the people. Or go wherever it seems right to you to go. So the captain of the guard gave him rations and a gratuity, and let him go.

vw@Jeremiah:40:6 @ Then Jeremiah went to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam at Mizpah. And he lived with him among the people who were left in the land.

vw@Jeremiah:40:7 @ And when all the commanders of the forces who were in the fields, they and their men, heard that the king of Babylon had made Gedaliah the son of Ahikam governor in the land, and had entrusted to him men, and women, and children, and many of the poor of the land, of those who were not exiled to Babylon;

vw@Jeremiah:40:8 @ then they came to Gedaliah at Mizpah, even Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and Johanan and Jonathan the sons of Kareah, and Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth, and the sons of Ephai of Netopha, and Jezaniah the son of a Maachathite, they and their men.

vw@Jeremiah:40:9 @ And Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan swore to them and to their men, saying, Do not fear to serve the Chaldeans. Live in the land and serve the king of Babylon, and it shall be well with you.

vw@Jeremiah:40:10 @ As for me, behold, I will live at Mizpah to serve the Chaldeans who have come to us. But you go gather wine, and summer fruits, and oil, and put them in your vessels, and live in your cities that you have taken.

vw@Jeremiah:40:11 @ Also when all the Jews in Moab, and among the Ammonites, and in Edom, and in all the countries, heard that the king of Babylon had left a remnant of Judah, and that he had set over them Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan;

vw@Jeremiah:40:12 @ then all the Jews returned out of all the places where they had been driven, and came to the land of Judah to Gedaliah at Mizpah, and gathered wine and summer fruits in abundance.

vw@Jeremiah:40:13 @ Moreover Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces that were in the fields came to Gedaliah at Mizpah,

vw@Jeremiah:40:14 @ and they said to him, You certainly know that Baalis the king of the Ammonites has sent Ishmael the son of Nethaniah to kill you. But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam did not believe them.

vw@Jeremiah:40:15 @ Then Johanan the son of Kareah spoke to Gedaliah in Mizpah secretly, saying, Please let me go, and I will kill Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and no man shall know. Why should he kill you so that all the Jews who are gathered to you should be scattered, and the remnant in Judah perish?

vw@Jeremiah:40:16 @ But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam said to Johanan the son of Kareah, You shall not do this thing, for you speak falsely of Ishmael.

vw@Jeremiah:41:1 @ And it came to pass in the seventh month that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, the son of Elishama, of the royal seed, and the rulers of the king, and ten men with him, came to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam at Mizpah. And there they ate bread together at Mizpah.
