* There was (5633 ) a man sent (5772 ) from God , whose name was John . * The same came (5627 ) for a witness , to bear witness (5661 ) of the Light , that all men through him might believe (5661 ). * He was (5713 ) not that Light , but was sent to bear witness (5661 ) of that Light . * That was (5713 ) the true Light , which lighteth (5719 ) every man that cometh (5740 ) into the world . * He was (5713 ) in the world , and the world was made (5633 ) by him , and the world knew (5627 ) him not . * He came (5627 ) unto his own , and his own received (5627 ) him not . * But as many as received (5627 ) him , to them gave he (5656 ) power to become (5635 ) the sons of God , even to them that believe (5723 ) on his name : * Which were born (5681 ), not of blood , nor of the will of the flesh , nor of the will of man , but of God . * And the Word was made (5633 ) flesh , and dwelt (5656 ) among us , (and we beheld (5662 ) his glory , the glory as of the only begotten of the Father ,) full of grace and truth . * John bare witness (5719 ) of him , and cried (5754 ), saying (5723 ), This was he (5713 ) of whom I spake (5627 ), He that cometh (5740 ) after me is preferred (5754 ) before me : for he was (5713 ) before me . * And of his fulness have all we received (5627 ), and grace for grace . * For the law was given (5681 ) by Moses , but grace and truth came (5633 ) by Jesus Christ . * No man hath seen (5758 ) God at any time ; the only begotten Son , which is (5752 ) in the bosom of the Father , he hath declared (5662 ) him . * And this is (5748 ) the record of John , when the Jews sent (5656 ) priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask (5661 ) him , Who art (5748 ) thou ? * And he confessed (5656 ), and denied (5662 ) not ; but confessed (5656 ), I am (5748 ) not the Christ . * And they asked (5656 ) him , What then ? Art (5748 ) thou Elias ? And he saith (5719 ), I am (5748 ) not . Art (5748 ) thou that prophet ? And he answered (5662 ), No . * Then said they (5627 ) unto him , Who art thou (5748 )? that we may give (5632 ) an answer to them that sent (5660 ) us . What sayest thou (5719 ) of thyself ? * He said (5713 ), I am the voice of one crying (5723 ) in the wilderness , Make straight (5657 ) the way of the Lord , as said (5627 ) the prophet Esaias . * And they which were sent (5772 ) were (5713 ) of the Pharisees . * And they asked (5656 ) him , and said (5627 ) unto him , Why baptizest thou (5719 ) then , if thou be (5748 ) not that Christ , nor Elias , neither that prophet ? * John answered (5662 ) them , saying (5723 ), I baptize (5719 ) with water : but there standeth one (5707 ) (5758 ) among you , whom ye know (5758 ) not ; * He it is (5748 ), who coming (5740 ) after me is preferred (5754 ) before me , whose shoes latchet I am (5748 ) not worthy to unloose (5661 ). * These things were done (5633 ) in Bethabara beyond Jordan , where John was (5713 ) baptizing (5723 ). * The next day John seeth (5719 ) Jesus coming (5740 ) unto him , and saith (5719 ), Behold the Lamb of God , which taketh away (5723 ) the sin of the world . * This is he (5748 ) of whom I said (5627 ), After me cometh (5736 ) a man which is preferred (5754 ) before me : for he was (5713 ) before me . * And I knew (5715 ) him not : but that he should be made manifest (5686 ) to Israel , therefore am I come (5627 ) baptizing (5723 ) with water . * And John bare record (5656 ), saying (5723 ), I saw (5766 ) the Spirit descending (5723 ) from heaven like a dove , and it abode (5656 ) upon him . * And I knew (5715 ) him not : but he that sent (5660 ) me to baptize (5721 ) with water , the same said (5627 ) unto me , Upon whom thou shalt see (5632 ) the Spirit descending (5723 ), and remaining (5723 ) on him , the same is (5748 ) he which baptizeth (5723 ) with the Holy Ghost . * And I saw (5758 ), and bare record (5758 ) that this is (5748 ) the Son of God . * Again the next day after John stood (5715 ), and two of his disciples ; * And looking upon (5660 ) Jesus as he walked (5723 ), he saith (5719 ), Behold the Lamb of God !
