Here the middle present means, He is taking away for himself. {To beg I am not ashamed} (\epaitein aischunomai\). The infinitive with \aischunomai\ means ashamed to begin to beg. The participle, \epait“n aischunomai\ would mean, ashamed while begging, ashamed of begging while doing it.
