* And he spoke a parable to them to show that men ought always to pray , and not loose heart ; * Saying , There was a judge in a city , who did not fear God or respect man : * And there was a widow in that city ; and she kept coming to him , saying , Give me justice against my adversary . * And he would not for a while : but afterward he said to himself , Though I do not fear God or respect man ; * Yet because this widow bothers me , I will give her justice , lest by her continual coming she wear me out . * And the Lord said , Hear what the unjust judge says . * And shall not God vindicate his elect , who cry day and night to him , and will he delay long with them ? * I tell you that he will vindicate them speedily . Nevertheless , when the Son of man comes , shall he find faith on the earth ? * And he spoke this parable to certain people who trusted in themselves that they were righteous , and despised others : * Two men went up into the temple to pray ; the one a Pharisee , and the other a tax gatherer . * The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself , God , I thank you that I am not as other men are , extortioners , unjust , adulterers , or even as this tax gatherer . * I fast twice in the week , I give tithes of all that I possess . * And the tax gatherer , standing far off , would not lift up so much as his eyes to heaven , but beat upon his breast , saying , God be merciful to me , a sinner . * I tell you , this man went down to his house justified rather than the other : for every one who exalts himself shall be abased ; and he who humbles himself shall be exalted .
