* And it came to pass (5633 ), that on one of those days , as he taught (5723 ) the people in the temple , and preached the gospel (5734 ), the chief priests and the scribes came upon (5627 ) him with the elders , * And spake (5627 ) unto him , saying (5723 ), Tell (5628 ) us , by what authority doest thou (5719 ) these things ? or who is he (5748 ) that gave (5631 ) thee this authority ? * And he answered (5679 ) and said (5627 ) unto them , I will also ask (5692 ) you one thing ; and answer (5628 ) me : * The baptism of John , was it (5713 ) from heaven , or of men ? * And they reasoned (5662 ) with themselves , saying (5723 ), If we shall say (5632 ), From heaven ; he will say (5692 ), Why then believed ye (5656 ) him not ? * But and if we say (5632 ), Of men ; all the people will stone (5692 ) us : for they be (5748 ) persuaded (5772 ) that John was (5750 ) a prophet . * And they answered (5662 ), that they could not tell (5760 ) whence it was . * And Jesus said (5627 ) unto them , Neither tell (5719 ) I you by what authority I do (5719 ) these things .
