* Then he began to tell the people this parable ; A certain man planted a vineyard , and rented it out to tenants , and went into a far country for a long time . * And at harvest time he sent a servant to the tenants , that they should give him some of the fruit of the vineyard : but the tenants beat him , and sent him away empty-handed . * He sent another servant : and they beat him also , and treated him shamefully , and sent him away empty-handed . * And he sent a third : and they wounded him , and cast him out . * Then the lord of the vineyard said , What shall I do ? I will send my beloved son : it may be they will respect him when they see him . * But when the tenants saw him , they reasoned among themselves , saying , This is the heir : come , let us kill him , that the inheritance may be ours . * So they cast him out of the vineyard , and killed him . What then shall the lord of the vineyard do to them ? * He shall come and destroy these tenants , and shall give the vineyard to others . When they heard this , they said , God forbid . * And he looked at them , and said , What then is this that is written , The stone which the builders rejected has become the cornerstone ? * Whoever shall fall upon that stone shall be broken ; but on whomever it shall fall , it will grind him to powder .
