Luke:23-24
Seeker Overlay ON
*
And the whole multitude of them arose (
5631 ),
and led (
5627 )
him unto Pilate .
*
And they began (
5662 )
to accuse (
5721 )
him ,
saying (
5723 ),
We found (
5627 )
this fellow perverting (
5723 )
the nation ,
and forbidding (
5723 )
to give (
5721 )
tribute to Caesar ,
saying (
5723 )
that he himself is (
5750 )
Christ a King .
*
And Pilate asked (
5656 )
him ,
saying (
5723 ),
Art (
5748 )
thou the King of the Jews ?
And he answered (
5679 )
him and said (
5713 ),
Thou sayest (
5719 )
it .
*
Then said (
5627 )
Pilate to the chief priests and to the people ,
I find (
5719 )
no fault in this man .
*
And they were the more fierce (
5707 ),
saying (
5723 ),
He stirreth up (
5719 )
the people ,
teaching (
5723 )
throughout all Jewry ,
beginning (
5671 )
from Galilee to this place .
*
When Pilate heard (
5660 )
of Galilee ,
he asked (
5656 )
whether the man were (
5748 )
a Galilaean .
*
And as soon as he knew (
5631 )
that he belonged (
5748 )
unto Herods jurisdiction ,
he sent (
5656 )
him to Herod ,
who himself also was (
5752 )
at Jerusalem at that time .
*
And when Herod saw (
5631 )
Jesus ,
he was exceeding glad (
5644 ):
for he was (
5713 )
desirous (
5723 )
to see (
5629 )
him of a long season ,
because he had heard (
5721 )
many things of him ;
and he hoped (
5707 )
to have seen (
5629 )
some miracle done (
5740 )
by him .
*
Then he questioned (
5707 )
with him in many words ;
but he answered (
5662 )
him nothing .
*
And the chief priests and scribes stood (
5715 )
and vehemently accused (
5723 )
him .
*
And Herod with his men of war set him at nought (
5660 ),
and mocked (
5660 )
him ,
and arrayed (
5631 )
him in a gorgeous robe ,
and sent him again (
5656 )
to Pilate .
*
And the same day Pilate and Herod were made (
5633 )
friends together :
for before (
5707 )
they were (
5752 )
at enmity between themselves .
*
And Pilate ,
when he had called together (
5671 )
the chief priests and the rulers and the people ,
*
Said (
5627 )
unto them ,
Ye have brought (
5656 )
this man unto me ,
as one that perverteth (
5723 )
the people :
and ,
behold (
5628 ),
I ,
having examined (
5660 )
him before you ,
have found (
5627 )
no fault in this man touching those things whereof ye accuse (
5719 )
him :
*
No ,
nor yet Herod :
for I sent (
5656 )
you to him ;
and ,
lo (
5628 ),
nothing worthy of death is (
5748 )
done (
5772 )
unto him .
*
I will therefore chastise (
5660 )
him ,
and release (
5692 )
him .
* (
For of necessity he must (
5707 )
release (
5721 )
one unto them at the feast .)
*
And they cried out (
5656 )
all at once ,
saying (
5723 ),
Away with (
5720 )
this man ,
and release (
5657 )
unto us Barabbas :
* (
Who for (
5713 )
a certain sedition made (
5637 )
in the city ,
and for murder ,
was cast (
5772 )
into prison .)
*
Pilate therefore ,
willing (
5723 )
to release (
5658 )
Jesus ,
spake again to them (
5656 ).
*
But they cried (
5707 ),
saying (
5723 ),
Crucify (
5657 )
him ,
crucify (
5657 )
him .
*
And he said (
5627 )
unto them the third time ,
Why ,
what evil hath he done (
5656 )?
I have found (
5627 )
no cause of death in him :
I will therefore chastise (
5660 )
him ,
and let him go (
5692 ).
*
And they were instant (
5711 )
with loud voices ,
requiring (
5734 )
that he might be crucified (
5683 ).
And the voices of them and of the chief priests prevailed (
5707 ).
*
And Pilate gave sentence (
5656 )
that it should be as (
5635 )
they required .
*
And he released (
5656 )
unto them him that for sedition and murder was cast (
5772 )
into prison ,
whom they had desired (
5710 );
but he delivered (
5656 )
Jesus to their will .
*
And as they led him away (
5627 ),
they laid hold upon (
5637 )
one Simon ,
a Cyrenian ,
coming (
5740 )
out of the country ,
and on him they laid (
5656 )
the cross ,
that he might bear (
5721 )
it after Jesus .
*
And there followed (
5707 )
him a great company of people ,
and of women ,
which also bewailed (
5710 )
and lamented (
5707 )
him .
*
But Jesus turning (
5651 )
unto them said (
5627 ),
Daughters of Jerusalem ,
weep (
5720 )
not for me ,
but weep (
5720 )
for yourselves ,
and for your children .
*
For ,
behold (
5628 ),
the days are coming (
5736 ),
in the which they shall say (
5692 ),
Blessed are the barren ,
and the wombs that never bare (
5656 ),
and the paps which never gave suck (
5656 ).
*
Then shall they begin (
5698 )
to say (
5721 )
to the mountains ,
Fall (
5628 )
on us ;
and to the hills ,
Cover (
5657 )
us .
*
For if they do (
5719 )
these things in a green tree ,
what shall be done (
5638 )
in the dry ?
*
And there were also two other ,
malefactors ,
led (
5712 )
with him to be put to death (
5683 ).
*
And when they were come (
5627 )
to the place ,
which is called (
5746 )
Calvary ,
there they crucified (
5656 )
him ,
and the malefactors ,
one on the right hand ,
and the other on the left .
*
Then said (
5707 )
Jesus ,
Father ,
forgive (
5628 )
them ;
for they know (
5758 )
not what they do (
5719 ).
And they parted (
5734 )
his raiment ,
and cast (
5627 )
lots .
*
And the people stood (
5715 )
beholding (
5723 ).
And the rulers also with them derided (
5707 )
him ,
saying (
5723 ),
He saved (
5656 )
others ;
let him save (
5657 )
himself ,
if he be (
5748 )
Christ ,
the chosen of God .
*
And the soldiers also mocked (
5707 )
him ,
coming (
5740 )
to him ,
and offering (
5723 )
him vinegar ,
*
And saying (
5723 ),
If thou be (
5748 )
the king of the Jews ,
save (
5657 )
thyself .
*
And a superscription also was (
5713 )
written (
5772 )
over him in letters of Greek ,
and Latin ,
and Hebrew ,
THIS IS (
5748 )
THE KING OF THE JEWS .
*
And one of the malefactors which were hanged (
5685 )
railed (
5707 )
on him ,
saying (
5723 ),
If thou be (
5748 )
Christ ,
save (
5657 )
thyself and us .
*
But the other answering (
5679 )
rebuked (
5707 )
him ,
saying (
5723 ),
Dost not thou fear (
5736 )
God ,
seeing thou art (
5748 )
in the same condemnation ?
*
And we indeed justly ;
for we receive (
5719 )
the due reward of our deeds (
5656 ):
but this man hath done (
5656 )
nothing amiss .
*
And he said (
5707 )
unto Jesus ,
Lord ,
remember (
5682 )
me when thou comest (
5632 )
into thy kingdom .
*
And Jesus said (
5627 )
unto him ,
Verily I say (
5719 )
unto thee ,
To day shalt thou be (
5704 )
with me in paradise .
*
And it was (
5713 )
about the sixth hour ,
and there was (
5633 )
a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour .
*
And the sun was darkened (
5681 ),
and the veil of the temple was rent (
5681 )
in the midst .
*
And when Jesus had cried (
5660 )
with a loud voice ,
he said (
5627 ),
Father ,
into thy hands I commend (
5695 )
my spirit :
and having said (
5631 )
thus ,
he gave up the ghost (
5656 ).
*
Now when the centurion saw (
5631 )
what was done (
5637 ),
he glorified (
5656 )
God ,
saying (
5723 ),
Certainly this was (
5713 )
a righteous man .
*
And all the people that came together (
5637 )
to that sight ,
beholding (
5723 )
the things which were done (
5637 ),
smote (
5723 )
their breasts ,
and returned (
5707 ).
*
And all his acquaintance ,
and the women that followed (
5660 )
him from Galilee ,
stood (
5715 )
afar off ,
beholding (
5723 )
these things .
*
And ,
behold (
5628 ),
there was a man named Joseph ,
a counsellor ;
and he was a good (
5723 )
man ,
and a just :
* (
The same had not consented (
5768 ) (
5713 )
to the counsel and deed of them ;)
he was of Arimathaea ,
a city of the Jews :
who also himself waited for (
5711 )
the kingdom of God .
*
This man went (
5631 )
unto Pilate ,
and begged (
5668 )
the body of Jesus .
*
And he took it down (
5631 ),
and wrapped (
5656 )
it in linen ,
and laid (
5656 )
it in a sepulchre that was hewn in stone ,
wherein never man before was (
5713 )
laid (
5740 ).
*
And that day was (
5713 )
the preparation ,
and the sabbath drew on (
5707 ).
*
And the women also ,
which came (
5713 ) (
5761 )
with him from Galilee ,
followed after (
5660 ),
and beheld (
5662 )
the sepulchre ,
and how his body was laid (
5681 ).
*
And they returned (
5660 ),
and prepared (
5656 )
spices and ointments ;
and rested (
5656 )
the sabbath day according to the commandment .
*
Now upon the first day of the week ,
very early in the morning ,
they came (
5627 )
unto the sepulchre ,
bringing (
5723 )
the spices which they had prepared (
5656 ),
and certain others with them .
*
And they found (
5627 )
the stone rolled away (
5772 )
from the sepulchre .
*
And they entered in (
5631 ),
and found (
5627 )
not the body of the Lord Jesus .
*
And it came to pass (
5633 ),
as they were much perplexed (
5745 )
thereabout ,
behold (
5628 ),
two men stood by (
5627 )
them in shining (
5723 )
garments :
*
And as they were (
5637 )
afraid ,
and bowed down (
5723 )
their faces to the earth ,
they said (
5627 )
unto them ,
Why seek ye (
5719 )
the living (
5723 )
among the dead ?
*
He is (
5748 )
not here ,
but is risen (
5681 ):
remember (
5682 )
how he spake (
5656 )
unto you when he was (
5752 )
yet in Galilee ,
*
Saying (
5723 ),
The Son of man must (
5748 )
be delivered (
5683 )
into the hands of sinful men ,
and be crucified (
5683 ),
and the third day rise again (
5629 ).
*
And they remembered (
5681 )
his words ,
*
And returned (
5660 )
from the sepulchre ,
and told (
5656 )
all these things unto the eleven ,
and to all the rest .
*
It was (
5713 )
Mary Magdalene ,
and Joanna ,
and Mary the mother of James ,
and other women that were with them ,
which told (
5707 )
these things unto the apostles .
*
And their words seemed (
5648 )
to them as idle tales ,
and they believed them not (
5707 ).
*
Then arose (
5631 )
Peter ,
and ran (
5627 )
unto the sepulchre ;
and stooping down (
5660 ),
he beheld (
5719 )
the linen clothes laid (
5740 )
by themselves ,
and departed (
5627 ),
wondering (
5723 )
in himself at that which was come to pass (
5756 ).
*
And ,
behold (
5628 ),
two of them went (
5713 ) (
5740 )
that same day to a village called Emmaus ,
which was (
5723 )
from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs .
*
And they talked (
5707 )
together of all these things which had happened (
5761 ).
*
And it came to pass (
5633 ),
that ,
while they communed (
5721 )
together and reasoned (
5721 ),
Jesus himself drew near (
5660 ),
and went with (
5711 )
them .
*
But their eyes were holden (
5712 )
that they should not know (
5629 )
him .
*
And he said (
5627 )
unto them ,
What manner of communications are these that ye have (
5719 )
one to another ,
as ye walk (
5723 ),
and are (
5748 )
sad ?
*
And the one of them ,
whose name was Cleopas ,
answering (
5679 )
said (
5627 )
unto him ,
Art thou only a stranger (
5719 )
in Jerusalem ,
and hast not known (
5627 )
the things which are come to pass (
5637 )
there in these days ?
*
And he said (
5627 )
unto them ,
What things ?
And they said (
5627 )
unto him ,
Concerning Jesus of Nazareth ,
which was (
5633 )
a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people :
*
And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered (
5656 )
him to be condemned to death ,
and have crucified (
5656 )
him .
*
But we trusted (
5707 )
that it had been (
5748 )
he which should (
5723 )
have redeemed (
5733 )
Israel :
and beside all this ,
to day is (
5719 )
the third day since these things were done (
5633 ).
*
Yea ,
and certain women also of our company made us astonished (
5627 ),
which were (
5637 )
early at the sepulchre ;
*
And when they found (
5631 )
not his body ,
they came (
5627 ),
saying (
5723 ),
that they had also seen (
5760 )
a vision of angels ,
which said (
5719 )
that he was alive (
5721 ).
*
And certain of them which were with us went (
5627 )
to the sepulchre ,
and found (
5627 )
it even so as the women had said (
5627 ):
but him they saw (
5627 )
not .
*
Then he said (
5627 )
unto them ,
O fools ,
and slow of heart to believe (
5721 )
all that the prophets have spoken (
5656 ):
*
Ought (
5713 )
not Christ to have suffered (
5629 )
these things ,
and to enter (
5629 )
into his glory ?
*
And beginning (
5671 )
at Moses and all the prophets ,
he expounded (
5707 )
unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself .
*
And they drew nigh (
5656 )
unto the village ,
whither they went (
5711 ):
and he made as though (
5710 )
he would have gone (
5738 )
further .
*
But they constrained (
5662 )
him ,
saying (
5723 ),
Abide (
5657 )
with us :
for it is (
5748 )
toward evening ,
and the day is far spent (
5758 ).
And he went in (
5627 )
to tarry (
5658 )
with them .
*
And it came to pass (
5633 ),
as he sat at meat (
5683 )
with them ,
he took (
5631 )
bread ,
and blessed (
5656 )
it ,
and brake (
5660 ),
and gave (
5707 )
to them .
*
And their eyes were opened (
5681 ),
and they knew (
5627 )
him ;
and he vanished (
5633 )
out of their sight .
*
And they said (
5627 )
one to another ,
Did (
5713 )
not our heart burn (
5746 )
within us ,
while he talked (
5707 )
with us by the way ,
and while he opened (
5707 )
to us the scriptures ?
*
And they rose up (
5631 )
the same hour ,
and returned (
5656 )
to Jerusalem ,
and found (
5627 )
the eleven gathered together (
5772 ),
and them that were with them ,
*
Saying (
5723 ),
The Lord is risen (
5681 )
indeed ,
and hath appeared (
5681 )
to Simon .
*
And they told (
5711 )
what things were done in the way ,
and how he was known (
5681 )
of them in breaking of bread .
*
And as they thus spake (
5723 ),
Jesus himself stood (
5627 )
in the midst of them ,
and saith (
5719 )
unto them ,
Peace be unto you .
*
But they were terrified (
5685 )
and affrighted (
5637 ),
and supposed (
5707 )
that they had seen (
5721 )
a spirit .
*
And he said (
5627 )
unto them ,
Why are ye (
5748 )
troubled (
5772 )?
and why do thoughts arise (
5719 )
in your hearts ?
*
Behold (
5628 )
my hands and my feet ,
that it is (
5748 )
I myself :
handle (
5657 )
me ,
and see (
5628 );
for a spirit hath (
5719 )
not flesh and bones ,
as ye see (
5719 )
me have (
5723 ).
*
And when he had thus spoken (
5631 ),
he shewed (
5656 )
them his hands and his feet .
*
And while they yet believed not (
5723 )
for joy ,
and wondered (
5723 ),
he said (
5627 )
unto them ,
Have ye (
5719 )
here any meat ?
*
And they gave (
5656 )
him a piece of a broiled fish ,
and of an honeycomb .
*
And he took (
5631 )
it ,
and did eat (
5627 )
before them .
*
And he said (
5627 )
unto them ,
These are the words which I spake (
5656 )
unto you ,
while (
5752 )
I was yet with you ,
that all things must (
5748 )
be fulfilled (
5683 ),
which were written (
5772 )
in the law of Moses ,
and in the prophets ,
and in the psalms ,
concerning me .
*
Then opened he (
5656 )
their understanding ,
that they might understand (
5721 )
the scriptures ,
*
And said (
5627 )
unto them ,
Thus it is written (
5769 ),
and thus it behoved (
5713 )
Christ to suffer (
5629 ),
and to rise (
5629 )
from the dead the third day :
*
And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached (
5683 )
in his name among all nations ,
beginning (
5671 )
at Jerusalem .
*
And ye are (
5748 )
witnesses of these things .
*
And ,
behold (
5628 ),
I send (
5719 )
the promise of my Father upon you :
but tarry (
5657 )
ye in the city of Jerusalem ,
until ye be endued (
5672 )
with power from on high .
*
And he led (
5627 )
them out as far as to Bethany ,
and he lifted up (
5660 )
his hands ,
and blessed (
5656 )
them .
*
And it came to pass (
5633 ),
while he blessed (
5721 )
them ,
he was parted (
5627 )
from them ,
and carried up (
5712 )
into heaven .
*
And they worshipped (
5660 )
him ,
and returned (
5656 )
to Jerusalem with great joy :
*
And were (
5713 )
continually in the temple ,
praising (
5723 )
and blessing (
5723 )
God .
Amen .
*
Luke ,
the beloved physician ,
and Demas ,
greet (
5736 )
you .
*
Only Luke is (
5748 )
with me .
Take (
5631 )
Mark ,
and bring him (
5720 )
with thee :
for he is (
5748 )
profitable to me for the ministry .
