* A sower went out to sow his seed : and as he sowed , some fell by the wayside ; and it was trodden down , and the birds of the air devoured it . * And some fell upon the rock ; and as soon as it had sprung up , it withered away , because it lacked moisture . * And some fell among thorns ; and the thorns sprang up with it , and choked it . * And other fell on good ground , and sprang up , and bore a crop a hundred times as great . And when he said these things , he called out , He who has ears to hear , let him hear . * And his disciples asked him , What does this parable mean ? * And he said , To you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God : but to others it is in parables ; that seeing they might not see , and hearing they might not understand . * Now the meaning of the parable is this : The seed is the word of God . * Those by the wayside are the ones who hear ; then the devil comes , and takes the word from their hearts , lest they should believe and be saved . * Those on the rock are the ones , who , when they hear , receive the word with joy ; but they have no root ; they believe for a while , but in time of temptation fall away . * And the seed which fell among thorns are those , who , when they have heard , go forth , and are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of this life , and bring no fruit to maturity . * But the seed on the good ground are those , who in an honest and good heart , having heard the word , keep it , and bring forth fruit with patience .
