* And immediately in the morning the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council , and bound Jesus , and carried him away , and delivered him to Pilate . * And Pilate asked him , Are you the King of the Jews ? And he said to him , You say so . * And the chief priests accused him of many things : but he answered nothing . * And Pilate asked him again , saying , Have you no answer to make ? behold how many things they testify against you . * But Jesus made no further answer ; so that Pilate was amazed . * Now at the feast he released to them one prisoner , whomever they requested . * And there was one named Barabbas , who was in prison with his fellow rebels , who had committed murder in the insurrection . * And the multitude approached and began asking him to do for them as he usually did . * Pilate answered them , saying , Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews ? * For he knew that the chief priests had delivered him out of envy . * But the chief priests incited the people to have him release Barabbas to them . * And Pilate answered and said again to them , What then shall I do with him whom you call the King of the Jews ? * And they cried out again , Crucify him . * Then Pilate said to them , Why , what evil has he done ? And they cried out all the louder , Crucify him . * And so Pilate , wanting to satisfy the people , released Barabbas to them , and delivered Jesus , when he had scourged him , to be crucified .
