* The soldiers led him away into the palace (that is , the Praetorium ) and they called together the whole battalion . * And they clothed him in a purple cloak , and they twisted a crown of thorns and put it on him . * And they began to salute him , »Hail , King of the Jews !« * Then they struck him on the head with a reed and spat on him ; and falling on their knees , they paid homage to him . * And when they had mocked him , they took the purple robe off him , and put his own clothes on him . Then they led him out to crucify him .
