* For Herod had laid hold (5660 ) on John , and bound (5656 ) him , and put (5639 ) him in prison for Herodias sake , his brother Philips wife . * For John said (5707 ) unto him , It is not lawful (5748 ) for thee to have (5721 ) her . * And when he would (5723 ) have put him to death (5658 ), he feared (5675 ) the multitude , because they counted (5707 ) him as a prophet . * But when Herods birthday was kept (5746 ), the daughter of Herodias danced (5662 ) before them , and pleased (5656 ) Herod . * Whereupon he promised (5656 ) with an oath to give (5629 ) her whatsoever she would ask (5672 ). * And she , being before instructed (5685 ) of her mother , said (5748 ), Give (5628 ) me here John Baptists head in a charger . * And the king was sorry (5681 ): nevertheless for the oaths sake , and them which sat with him at meat (5740 ), he commanded (5656 ) it to be given (5683 ) her . * And he sent (5660 ), and beheaded (5656 ) John in the prison . * And his head was brought (5681 ) in a charger , and given (5681 ) to the damsel : and she brought (5656 ) it to her mother .
